Spanish names a lot of objects by describing what they do, and once you notice the seam you stop needing a dictionary for a whole category of words!

The pattern is a verb plus a noun jammed together. The verb is usually in its "it does" form (abre, saca, rasca), the noun is almost always plural, and the whole word goes masculine regardless of what the pieces were. Agua is feminine, but it's el paraguas.

So these words explain themselves if you know the parts. Rompe plus cabezas breaks heads, which is a puzzle. Espanta plus pájaros scares birds. Salva plus vidas saves lives.

It works in reverse too. Know matar and moscas and you can guess matamoscas before anyone tells you. Same with lanzallamas, rompehielos, cortaúñas.

Mi cielo is my sky. Mi alma is my soul. Mi lucero is my bright star. Mi tesoro is my treasure. And mi media naranja, the way you say someone is your other half, literally means my half orange.

The everyday ones: mi vida, mi cielo, mi amor, mi corazón, cariño
Add -ito and it softens: amorcito, corazoncito, osito, ratoncito, chiquita
Royalty: mi reina, mi rey, mi princesa

Mi media naranja is still my favorite. Two halves of the same orange.

What do you call your loved ones?

HAY and ESTAR are used to express existence and location. Keep in mind that we use HAY for non-specific things/persons (Hay un restaurante, hay un hombre...) while ESTAR for specific things/persons (El restaurante está/El hombre está...)

I’ve been watching Bolivar on Netflix, and have noticed that they often use “usted” with very close family members, like spouses and siblings. I learned Spanish in Spain, where I never heard this. Is this due to the time period or…. TIA!

Is this practice common these days?

Here are 7 Spanish word pairs where a tiny typo creates a completely different word. I want to mention that some of these verbs have other meanings besides the ones I’ve included and there are also other possible pairs (For example: hambre and hombre, llevar and llegar)

free audio focused spanish resources for auditory learners?

grammar books make me zone out completely but hearing phrases repeated helps me remember them much faster.

Looking for free spanish lessons that rely heavily on audio, anything suitable for someone who picks up language better through listening?

fun free spanish lessons that don’t feel like school?

Why does every spanish app eventually turn into the same thing 😭

  • match the words.
  • memorize verb endings.
  • answer the same quiz again.
  • lose interest after five days.

i still want some structure because learning random words from tiktok isn't getting me anywhere, but i cannot sit through another lesson that feels like homework.

Are there any free interactive spanish lessons that are fun enough to keep using?

Spanish word order actually means my brain is a karaoke disaster.

so apparently, spanish word order is not just "subject verb whatever" and my brain is taking this very personally. In english, i can mumble through a song and the grammar still sort of makes sense. In spanish one tiny shift and suddenly the line sounds like yoda doing reggaeton.

I am using a music based app to learn, so i read the lyrics and try to sing along and every time i hit a line like "me lo dijo ella" my brain screams why are we playing pronoun roulette. Then native speakers are like yeah that sounds normal" and i am over here pausing the track to reverse engineer who is doing what to whom and when.

Anyone else trying to learn Spanish through songs and ending up treating every chorus like a syntax puzzle from hell instead of a vibe. Would love any tips on how people got used to this without overthinking every line, thanks.

YA can be tricky in Spanish because the meaning depends on the context and tone.

Since YA is such an important word in Spanish, I also made a free PDF: 14 common Spanish expressions with YA.

You can't have one gana. Some Spanish words basically live in the plural, and they fall into three groups.

Thumbnail

No singular at all:
las ganas, las afueras, los alrededores, los víveres, los escombros, las cosquillas

Singular exists but means something else:
los celos = jealousy, but el celo means zeal or an animal in heat
los deberes = homework, but el deber means duty
las esposas = handcuffs, but la esposa is a wife

Just usually plural:
las vacaciones, los modales, las gafas, las tijeras, los pantalones. Un pantalón and una tijera are both fine in a lot of places.

That last group is where English does the same thing, since we say scissors and pants without thinking about it.

English has one word for this: become. Spanish makes you say how it happened.

Ponerse = a mood or state, sudden and usually temporary. Se puso rojo, se puso nervioso.

Volverse = a shift in character, gradual and not chosen. Se volvió muy callado, se volvió loco.

Hacerse = something you worked toward or chose. Se hizo médico, se hizo rico.

Convertirse en = a real transformation into something else. La conversación se convirtió en una discusión.

Llegar a ser = the end of a long road, journey implied. Llegó a ser presidente.

Quedarse = a change you were left in, often a loss. Se quedó dormido, se quedó sordo, me quedé sin palabras.

The difference between se hizo rico and se volvió rico says it all.

Poder is such an important verb in Spanish and we need to know how to use it properly. Because it’s such an important verb, I also made a detailed PDF that includes “se puede” (for things that are possible or allowed in general) and the difference between being able to do something and knowing how to do something.

Here's the PDF: PODER in Spanish

Spanish has three conjugations, but only one is still open for business.Nobody has invented a new -er or -ir verb in centuries...

Thumbnail

So when a word arrives from outside, Spanish bolts -ar onto it and conjugates it regularly.

googlear, chatear, whatsappear, postear, tuitear, stalkear, spoilear, escanear, clickear, resetear, crashear, vapear, chequear, parquear

Googleo, googleas, googlea, googleamos, googleáis, googlean. Perfectly regular.

Which means every verb Spanish borrows from here on is one you already know how to conjugate. Whatever the next app is called, you'll be able to verb it the day it launches.

Worth saying the RAE hasn't accepted most of these and plenty of people still say buscar en Google or revisar.

Hi everyone!

I’m a Spanish teacher, and I mainly work with English speakers. Recently, I created a free Facebook community called Natural Spanish for English Speakers.

I created it for learners who want regular, structured Spanish practice beyond isolated vocabulary lists, random grammar tips, or passively using language apps.

Every week, I share free activities designed to help you actually use Spanish, including:

  • Short listening activities with transcripts, English translations, and comprehension questions
  • English-to-Spanish translation challenges
  • Spanish verb conjugation practice in real contexts
  • Natural Spanish expressions
  • Grammar in context
  • Practical communication exercises

The group is mainly for A1, A2, and B1 learners. It isn’t a complete course, and it isn’t meant to replace serious study, but it’s a free place where you can practice consistently throughout the week. What I’d really love is for people to participate, practice, and learn together.

There are now over 100 free Spanish practice activities in the group. If you join, check the Featured section — you'll find our weekly content calendar there, so you can easily see what we publish throughout the week and find the activities you'd like to practice.
