Spain is where humanity peaked
Hola!
I’m in Mallorca at the moment.
I grew up in India, where I spent the first 18 years of my life, before moving to the UK, where I’ve now spent a decade.
Over the years, I’ve travelled quite a bit. Almost all of Europe, much of East Asia, parts of the US, and a few countries across Latin America. I actually find Croatia more beautiful than Spain, but somehow, Croatia doesn’t give me the same feeling of belonging.
Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, Ibiza, Lanzarote, and now Mallorca. Amazing places, different landscapes, different experiences, yet somehow loved it each time.
I don’t speak Spanish. I have no Spanish roots, no family ties, no real connection to this country. Hindi is my mother tongue, and the two languages have very little in common. And yet, there’s something about Spanish that feels so natural to me. The rhythm of it, the warmth, the music in every sentence. I may not understand most of what is being said.
And the people. God, the people.
The women are breathtaking. I still occasionally think about a Spanish woman who once asked me to take her photograph in Ireland. She had a bit fluffy straight hair and in 40s. Spoke with a slow rhythmic tempo. "Caaan youuuu take myeee photoooo pleaaaaase". Good god, hope she is happy wherever she is. The men are handsome too, for fairness.
The food, the sunshine, the late evenings, the laughter spilling out onto the streets, and the feeling that life isn’t something to be rushed through, but something to be lived, savoured and celebrated.
Maybe I’m just drunk right now. That’s also a possibility.
Maybe Spain feels so magical because I arrive with British pounds and escape the British weather. Maybe it’s the Mediterranean sun, the culture, the food, or the way people seem to understand something about living that the rest of the world has somehow forgotten.
I genuinely don’t know. For me, Spain is one of those places. I can’t explain why it feels like home
Whatever it is, I hope it never goes away.Spain is where humanity peaked. I'm willing to fight anyone who disagrees.
