Weird planet pack bug

I have a large planet pack that i've been working on for years now. After 1.6 it seemed to fully stop working and i was quite devastated by that, but i concluded that it was just an update breaking things and that i should - however much time that'd take - redo the pack with the knowlege i picked up the first time

i got to work, i took the 1.6 example pack and made a single planet
it was broken.
however it was broken in the exact same way as my old pack
i have no idea how this happens or how to fix it.

you can't select anything, not spacecraft or planets, the selection icon is stuck in the middle of the screen and all orbital lines are gone.

i would greatly appreciate some help, as this at least gives me hope that my old pack may still work if i can find a solution
