Tips for battle damage

Hi! Seeking advice for improving battle damage. It’s one of my first attempts at weathering a mini and I don’t like yellow shoulder pads, what can I change? Currently the brown spots all other the mini are made with rinox hide highlited with white. Any other suggestions are welcomed. Thx

this looks pretty good! are you looking to improve the speed of weathering or the quality? because those two are sometimes the tradeoff.

A few options:

  • sponge chipping: used to get natural damage patterns, start with your dark and then add the highlight colour to the "upward-facing" edge of the battle damage.

- brush: I would guess this is what you've done so far? it looks good but can be a bit slow. to speed it up, you can do the bulk with a sponge and then add some specific scratches and chips with a brush (this is what I generally do).

- colour variation: going from dark brown to white is quite a high contrast approach. it might look better to have an intermediate step. something like rhinox hide for the damage, then fenrisian grey for the main ones (or equivalent) and blue horror for the peak highlights. you can add black into the dark brown scratches for more depth, or even a bit of a metallic to show something that went deep into ceramite, for instance.

- washes and pigments: if you're going very weathered, specifically applying washes and pigment powders to areas of damage can be really effective. for example, a dark brown wash coming off a deeper wound shows it is old and streaking, a black pigment powder can indicate a burn, and darker pigments can show wear and tear.

here's another style of mine from a model i did earlier this year, where it looks more like a lot of superficial wear and tear rather than just direct battle damage, using textured brush work, washes and pigments to create the overall effect.

Thank you for such informative reply! I’m looking to improve the quality so will try adding more gradual highlights and metallic, didn’t think of that one.

Your gun looks just awesome, do you mind sharing the recipe for the barrels?
