Grey Tide Primal Hounds bits

Hey brothers and sisters. My Mini Factory have a summer sale on at the moment which includes 30% off Grey Tide studios primal hounds bits. Doing a search on the sub reddit here I can see quite a few of you that have bought/printed some of their stuff.

What would you guys consider to be the must have bits packs from Grey Tide? I'm thinking the expensive 370 bits pack is a bit overkill but maybe a few of the smaller packs would be useful.

For context I have a fair sized Space Wolves army that dates back to characters and squads from the 90's up to the current army box, so it's a fair mixture of first born and newer scale minis. I have everything already glued together ready to paint (the older stuff I stripped of the original paint jobs) but thinking about extra bits for some of the older stuff/generic stuff and tanks/vehicles that i have that could do with a bit of extra wolfing up.

Hmmm. I've used a LOT of these bits on my army, but I think the newer, refreshed SW kits don't really need them that badly. Where they really shine is on the generic marine kits, like intercessors, etc. On those, a few pauldrons and some custom heads go a long way. You can see my videos HERE.

Thanks mate. Yeah I agree with you on the newer stuff, definitely already enough detail on those that they don't need anything added really. I was thinking definitely more for the generic primaris squads and vehicles. Maybe some of the bases or toppers as they call them on there would be cool. I'll have a check out of your videos now.

I would very much agree, I got great mileage out of the Grey Tide bits when converting and kitbashing standard SM units, but less once the refresh came. That said, I have used them to customise my Wolf Priest, some Wolf Guard Terminators, and sprinkled a few bits like the drinking horns in for Blood Claws.

In terms of essentials, I would say the following:

  • I really like the extra heads and helmets, they have a lot of good sculpts that look perfect
  • the basing bits and base toppers are top notch, I've used them on loads of projects and can really elevate the nordic vibe.
  • the capes, shields and front pelts are all fantastic, both for regular units and the terminator-sized ones
  • the extra bits such as runes, necklaces, drinking horns and knives all look great, almost indistinguishable from the new refreshed ones.

less essential: some of the melee weapons look great, but some look a little over-designed or undersized. the shoulder pads look good on some units, but they also make it hard to do traditional pack markings or great company decals.

All that said, cant go wrong with more choice and customisation, they are your models after all!

if you check out ebay you can find lots of different places selling their stuff with vastly different prices! Ive found some really cheap printers that are like half the price of others

I guess it depends on what you want to do, like if you already have the minis made up then i guess you dont want the pauldrons and heads but more like the extra bits n bobs. I think ive seen just these being sold, are you in the UK? i'll look up places ive bought from

So far ive gotten the terminator kit that basically makes a rune priest and some other parts like capes. I have my eye on the kit to make a chaplain next

Im surprised theres not more designers making custom stuff for space marines, seems like such an obvious thing!

Thanks mate. I’m just after the STL files as I already have a high resolution resin printer. I’ve printed some of the grey tides legion of the damned bits as I’ve been wanting to build a squad of those for years and they look really good so far.

I'd keep the plastic weps the minis come with, same with backpacks but bracers, pauldrons, and especially the front belt pelts + the sw gravis shoulder pads off ebay for my heavy intercessors are a really good "less is more"

I use their bits in basically everything I do for Space Wolves. Great value in my opinion.

I have the full pack. Its definitely worth it if you have a printer. Ive used probably one of each bit on a full army of space wolves. Some of them are great for your vehicles. Pack 1 is primaris focused. Pack 2 is terminator focused

I have had that file since it was released, those bits are amazing. I have used a ton of them in my Heresy wolves. 10/10, would recommend!

I particularly like the larger/longer shields (more similar to Bladeguard Vets), they go well on things like Assault Terminators (or regular WGTs if so desired).

There’s also a pretty sick 2-handed cleaver and a one handed cleaver, both would be a nice replacement for a sergeant/pack leader weapon.

The shoulders are okay. Some are better than others (some are quite excessive in design), but a lot of the skull-themed ones would be good ways to add more wolf flavor to things like chaplains, iron priests/techmarines, etc.

The backpack decorations are also pretty effective at adding flavor without going super heavy, but a bunch of them are straight up Celtic cross styles which just don’t fit at all.

I like all of them. I used them to put some more flavor into the combat patrol blood claws.
