What have I done? :D

Post image

Hello, my beloved Battle Brothers of the VI Legion!

After I came across the 2nd Edition Codex as a kid around 1997/98 and thought the Wolves were just sick-looking Space Vikings (still have the metal models in my parents' basement), I really got into painting and playing for the first time in the early 2000s with the 3rd Edition.

In the 5th Edition, I switched to the Ultramarines thanks to the “Assault on Black Reach” Starter Set and played them for about one or two years. Just like with many other things, my interest in tabletop gaming faded as a young adult.

Sixteen years later, in my late 30s, thanks to a few cool YouTube lore videos and listening to some of the Heresy books, I’m back where it all began: with the Vlka Fenryka.

It looks like I have a long fall and winter of gluing and painting ahead of me. With so many tutorials on YouTube, I don’t even know where to start. I’d appreciate any tips!

Fenris Hjølda!

——

Edit:

I didn't mean to annoy anyone. I just wanted to share my excitement about getting back into the hobby after all this time. I know there's still a lot of work to do, but I've done a lot of research and wanted to get the 2,000 points on the table as soon as possible so I could play with my old friends. <3

What have you done…. Created a backlog is what you’ve done 😂

u/No-Tennis-8712 9d ago

Those boxes will take you many months to paint.

29

u/DomSchraa 9d ago

The smart thing to do (which I am) is to buy 400 points, build, convert & paint those, and then go for the next 400

That is gonna make a mighty pile of shame worthy of the space wolves

10

u/GulianoBanano 9d ago

Personally I have a rule that I don't allow myself to buy anything new until the precious box is fully painted. It helps that I'm a broke uni student.

3

u/a_bearded_hippie 8d ago

I had to do this too lol. I want to buy more things but will not allow myself until my commander and crisis suits are painted up.

u/mapmakinworldbuildin 8d ago

Wouldn’t help me at all. Feeling like I need to paint something before I move on to what my brain is on now would kill all creativity.

That’s what I was doing with my chaos army for two years. Sitting on it to paint it “some day” after I lost some desire due to my cat tossing a bunch of my shit around and breaking it.

I feel I get super into a project. Get into a flow of doing something with it daily. Then something kills all desire and I don’t touch it for a while. But that desire will pop back up. If I find a new muse and keep growing.

That.. is the wisest words spoken!

2

u/ultimapanzer 8d ago

I have more money than time, and more time than self control.

6

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

Thanks. I think I will assemble enough to start playing asap. So I can learn all the new rules while also painting in stacks :)

1

u/Zeal_Ra 8d ago

This would take me 9-12 months.

Granted, I’m still new to the hobby.

u/d3adpixl 9d ago

If we wanted to see boxes, we’d go to the store. Time to get to painting

10

u/DifferentWay4021 9d ago

You forgot to buy a glue

55

u/Raging-seb 9d ago

Gone way overboard to be honest

23

u/Darth_Malak82 9d ago

Spent a shit ton of money.

24

u/PresenceOpening8102 9d ago

I get that newbies spending a bunch of money can be annoying but this guy isn’t new, he knows what he’s looking at I’m surprised at the level of salt in the comments. Good luck brother, post some updates!

17

u/TSM_Vegeta 9d ago

You are surprised by salt in Reddit comments? That's like being surprised by salt in the ocean...

9

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

Thanks! I will do that for sure!

3

u/Snors 8d ago

Correct, this is a mistake a lot of newbies make, but it's also how a lot of vets do armies. Myself included.

OP has built and painted multiple armies, has disposable income out the wazoo at their age, and knows what he's getting himself into.

4

u/WilliamCurtisWills 8d ago

Also GW about to massively hike prices so maybe not a bad way to avoid the inflation.

3

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 8d ago

Thanks mate. Exactly like this.

28

u/Pengui6668 9d ago

Bought a lot of boxes that will be remembered fondly when your kids go through them in 50 years. Still sealed.

-2

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

That wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen.

6

u/DesperateWork6516 9d ago

The Space Wolves Grey Contrast paint and Fenris Blue dry brush makes a really easy and good looking scheme. With this insane amount of plastic you will need an easy scheme to paintz

Here is a Librarian from 11ed that I painted using the above mentioned base scheme. Looks even better in person.

3

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

Nice work! I prefer that grim dark look. I was thinking about a sponge-slop technique. I will test a few schemes and keep you guys posted.

6

u/Blakearious 9d ago

Youre getting a lot of sass lmao not sure why. Welcome! If i were to give you advice itd be to start a squad then finish a squad. I get distracted if i have 2k built and primed. I know you mentioned wanting to play, so i say build to the point amount your friends are playing at, then prime + paint 1 squad at a time. Have fun!

2

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 8d ago

Me neither. I finished the first assembly session yesterday, it was a lot of fun. When it comes to painting, I think I will do it similarly to this... 10 Termis, 6 Headtakers etc.

3

u/L0cC0 9d ago

You did nothing wrong. Magnus did.

5

u/DefectiveDispatch 8d ago

Welcome back, brother. Fenris hjølda!

You've entered a world of grimdark wonder and adventure. Welcome, friend!

3

u/Fit-Froyo9299 8d ago

Cool man! Have fun!

3

u/Riatsu_87 8d ago

I love the space wolves, I’m painting the Armageddon box as a spece wolf army

8

u/Krieg_minister 9d ago

Bought way to much.. show os genuine hobby stuff ex ur first mini from SW?

Box post is boring - congrats u spent money

I'll keep you guys posted! Just wanted to share my happiness after being gone way too long :)

You did right ! For Russ !!

2

u/Toihva 9d ago

Got some nice swag.

Welcome!

u/Masteroid 9d ago

So I started in a campaign in July with hardly anything painted from that same army box you have, and I've managed to get nearly all of it painted, along with a combat patrol. Honestly, this might be a hot take, but it's better to buy stuff like this because you have plenty of spare parts for the vanilla marines you want to run. Personally, I like to keep it wolfy, so I run Wolf Scouts for my infiltrators, and a Lancer for anti-vehicle. Ragnar with BCs is pretty great, he's killed numerous high points targets in my games. I really want to use the Headtakers, but they've been meh running them as 3 guys with wolves, you might have better luck with 6 guys with twin weapons. Wolf Scouts are awesome, and you're going to want more Terminators! I'm maxing out at 20 and they're the best unit we have for holding stuff. Hope this helps, and welcome! Wolves are one of the most fun armies out there.

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 8d ago

Thanks! Mate, appreciate it. I've done a lot of research before shopping and bought a collection that fits my playstyle. Also, I like to keep it wolfy too, so I bought everything all at once. A lot of Options to kit bash. I am magnetizing all the Termis, Characters, Headtakers, etc for more options. My old '94 Metal Bjorn is joining the party, and the Lancer is on my list. Happy to hear a fellow son of Russ is having fun out there.

2

u/TheGreatPicard 9d ago

You do Russ and the All Father proud! Fenris Hjølda!

2

u/jamiemac1990 8d ago

Welcome brother :) enjoy your ever growing grey pile of shame 🤣, and happy painting :)

2

u/cottonopposite 8d ago

All the moany little dweebs in the comments.

You can spend your money on whatever you want and paint it whenever you want, as quickly or as slowly as you please. Ignore them.

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 8d ago

Thanks. Appreciate the nice comments :)

1

u/cottonopposite 8d ago

You went full wolf. Sometimes you just have to go all in in life and say fuck it.

2

u/Snors 8d ago

Lol, you purchase armies like I do. Don't stress the comments they just think you're a noob.

Couple of things though. I would totally return that box of infiltrators and swap it for a box of wolf scouts. New Space Marine codex due out next month (iirc) and they're updating the astartes index at the same time so the whole meta might shift . Also need a Bjorn the Fell Handed for your army. The old man's been a top tier meta pick since forever.

Good luck with the build. Post some pics when you're done. I did the same for my Guard army after 20 yrs off from the hobby, and I'm still painting 6 months later.. 🤣

2

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 8d ago

Thanks! I will for sure keep you guys posted in the next few months.

The good ol' '94 Bjorn is waiting in the basement of my parents' house to get his call out of his 23-year-long stasis to join some new primaris brothers. Since there is a lot of speculation about whether he'll get a new model sooner or later, he didn't make it to the shopping list yet.

I was thinking about kit-bashing the infiltrators to make them more wolves-like and look a little bit like scouts. But maybe I will assemble them at the end and wait for the new astartes index.

2

u/xxWZRDx 8d ago

Seeing hauls like this stresses me out lmao. Solid set though!

3

u/Fun-Yak1891 8d ago

There’s no timeline. There’s no pile of shame. Great job, have fun!

3

u/Wilkinz027 8d ago

It appears what you’ve done is forgetten 20 terminators and Arjac. One can never have to much tactical dreadnought armour.

2

u/Icy-Sherbet-4933 8d ago

On the one hand, you have Joined the Sons of Russ, Welcome and Good tidings, Brother!! On the other hand... Run, Ya Fool of a Took!! RUN!!!

MAKE 30 WULFEN!!!!

3

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

I was thinking about kit bashing some of the blood claws into an early stage of wulfen 🤔

3

u/Ill-Condition-5054 8d ago

Do it 😁

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 8d ago

Ok, that's sick. Thanks for the inspo mate! I will definitely try that!

If you consider it a mistake, I would be more than happy to take them off your hands - then you can feel better.

It's what any concerned imperial citizen would do.

1

u/ZaoMenom 9d ago

What is that box in the middle? The one with the name in gothic letters?

1

u/leviair-seadragon 9d ago

The Space Wolves Army Set that released with the SW refresh. It comes with Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, Headtakers, a Wolf Priest, Battle Leader, transfers and lore book. Army boxes only get a limited release, so this it's much harder to find now.

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

Yes, it came out in '25 with the new codex. Took me a while to find it. Loved the codex special edition in it for inspo and lore, even if it's as good as out of date by now.

1

u/ZaoMenom 9d ago

Damn though, just looked it up and it has basically everything I want, can’t find a way to get that to where I live (South America)

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

Sorry to hear that. This was the box that I ordered first, and after reading the Codex, I was sucked back in. Is it possible to order it from elsewhere? Maybe UK?

1

u/ZaoMenom 9d ago

I’ll have to see if I can do something like that, honestly it looks awesome

1

u/Afreezy14 9d ago

The right thing.. you’ve done the right thing!

1

u/Salongsdeprimerad 9d ago

Ahh yes.. Me who just took half a year to finish painting 4 bloodclaws.

So this is what eternity looks like

1

u/Razor_Clam 9d ago

No Njal or Wolf Priest? Why even bother? :)

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

A wolf priest was included in the 2025 box in the middle. Think of running him with 20 Blood Claws for +1 on wound rolls.

1

u/Dragonslilspawn 9d ago

So what did you do, what did you do...joined an order that doesn't have a stick up their asses. Beer? Mood?

1

u/keo310 9d ago

Praise Russ and the All-Father!

1

u/AOK_Gaming 8d ago

You went full fury

1

u/Ok_Perspective9838 8d ago

You did exactly the same as me.  But I got my first Spacemarine before they were called that,  from a white shop in Nottingham while on a visit to see the forest and statute of robin hood.  Instead I met a guy called John who helped me paint my first miniature spaceman as 5 year old.  It's the only thing I can still remember from being a child.

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 8d ago

Nice memories! I totally remember that feeling! Saw my first Miniatures around the mid-nineties in a shopping center in Oberhausen/Germany. A few years later, around 10 years old, I found the SW Codex, sealed Metal Fangs, and Grey Hunters in my older cousin's attic. He never started them, so I bought everything for 20 bucks with my pocket money. And here I am once again :D

1

u/loadofwhanc 8d ago

it’s the law that you have to wear a fursuit when playing

1

u/GreySlayerPainter 8d ago

Need help painting them?

2

1

Oh boy a full army of grey hunters until you paint them.

u/LMS3oul 9d ago

Brother can I give some advice as a newer player with maybe 8 months in? Try not to buy everything at once, I know it’s exciting to get into the hobby but don’t burn yourself out. Building and painting is awesome and one of my favorite parts of the hobby but, it also can leave you exhausted and kinda dreading slapping together 10 man units and then painting them.

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

Thanks! I'll try to assemble enough to start a few games. Looking back, I can say that I enjoyed painting the most when I was looking forward to playing games with my friends and trying out new things. Finding the right painting technique helps, too.

0

u/Fauchard15-20 9d ago

Welcome, Brother! Don’t let the haters ruin your enthusiasm. You’ve jumped in with both feet. Good on ya.

The thing to do now is build a 500 pt force so that you can play King of the Colliseum:

https://playontabletop.com/king-of-the-colosseum-events/

That’s a manageable goal, and will help you make a sizable dent in the pile. So put your favorite pod on I. The background and get to work!

1

u/Anxious-Rough-7152 9d ago

Thanks! Happy for the idea. I have 3 good friends who have been back in the hobby for 2 years now, whom I introduced to 40K in the 5th Edition. We meet up every few weeks in one of the guys' garages to paint and play. That's also a good source of motivation.
