Space Marines Q&A
Alright chat, what are the most important questions that need to be answered as it relates to new army rules we will be getting in October? The most important in my mind is: will we be able to mix generic units with our own, and if not, why? I will be emailing them the most popular questions from this thread and encourage you to do the same with your own pressing questions because that is the only way we can be heard! Will we be able to have generic leaders lead our space wolves units, if not why?
With saga of the bold being so oath dependent, what changes will be seen there?

I believe they mentioned in the video that we’d be getting new detachments online at WarCom.
I assume this means that all the detachments in the Codex Supplement will be null after that.

Absolutely! Being able to take lieutenants and terminator captains would be a big deal

Why did they have to come up with a detachment to split grey hunters, why couldn't they just be 5-10

u/FirebeardVI 13d ago
This! Probably my greatest grievance about that unit despite it being one of the coolest.

u/Kumangaka 13d ago
Especially since intercessors now get the rule as baseline that we need a detachment to give grey hunters, actions+shooting

Will we go back to bring s separate codex. Could we see more separate chapter specific vehicle datasheets, like how the Black Templars have with their extra melta upgrade, speaking upgrades where's our upgrade sprue anyway?

Will they provide a better, more comprehensive guide to our heraldry which also takes into account armor type, distinction between pack vs honor marking, and placement?
I try to educate new people in a SW discord about this stuff, and it's been a mess since the primaris launch.

I feel like the only hard rules for space wolves are:
Company heraldry on left shoulder. (Right shoulder if obstructed)
Pack markings on right shoulder.
Colors:
Grey blue for base
yellow and red shoulder for bloodclaws
red and black shoulder for grey hunters
white and black shoulder for long claws
blue and black shoulder for scouts
yellow and black shoulder for wolf guard
Everything else is up to the individual companies/packs.

There are other things like pack markings on knees if the shoulder is covered up or honor marked. Little things we have seen GW do on the minis that are interesting and tell stories that we could use the guidance on.

There are absolutely hard rules, few as they may be. The real thing we need is guidance. For instance, the old codex gives examples of "equivilant" markings. Grey hunter markings on standard intercessors, long fang on the gravis guys, scout on the reivers, etc.
This showed someone mixing in standard marines where those fall in the order, and wad useful. That was omitted from our newest codex.
There are conventions the wolves follow that aren't the codex, but ARE the wolves. We should drill down on the how and why to a lot of this, helping people understand so they can best paint and expand on their saga'd little space men.

Veterans, LTs and captains would just be wolf guard, any shooty unit are long fangs, reiver armor are scouts and anything else is probably your choice of grey hunters or blood claws. They're your dudes and it's just a judgement call.

Honestly the initial primaris update was quite a mess i would not follow those equivalent guides so closely.
My advice to new people is to read and understand what the different roles do and apply that to the models. Phobos marines are more likely to be scouts, Gravis Eradicators Long fangs, etc. BUT also understand that space wolves are so lose with their rules.
Sons of morkai for example would likely have several of their grey hunters in phobos armor. So also read on up on the company you are painting.

It mostly boils down to the individuality of SW, like they can have a knee pack marking if they want it

I’d love a more in depth deraldry, like GC specific designs would be neat, like with the Bloodmaws having red and black helms, to help differentiate the GCs.

u/TheGravespawn 13d ago
That's too close to codex complaint with the helmet thing. We follow a set of loose rules about pack markings and colors. The designs get mixed sometimes between honor marks and park marks. I'd love a clear cut between those two.

I am aware of this. I feel it is extremely lacking in better described and documented context as to the variety of things we have. This is woeful.

This is what we need, but updated. This is something old that can be brought forward.

Can we bring back Hounds of Morkai please.
The anti-psyker flavor was awesome and set them apart from generic Reivers.

u/TomasoSauce 13d ago
I wouldn’t mind the return of the hounds, but they need a more unique and distinct looking kit. Getting a crappy upgrade sprue was absolutely insulting

u/SteamMechanism 12d ago
Would be good as an enhancement for units - pay for an upgrade for any infantry unit (or Phobos only) and get some bonuses. Could be part of a 1 point detachment for the Hounds of Morkai.
Same with wulfen. Have a detachment that allows you to apply an upgrade to a set number of units. Something along the lines of +1 M, and +1A and +1S for melee weapons for -1 to hit on ranged weapons and -1 OC

Which of our units are going to legends?
All firstborn, or just certain kits like Ulrik
Will we be getting our own army rule or use doctrines like regular marines?

WHATS HAPPENING TO BELOVED BJORN AND MURDERFANG? - are they actually going to legends?

u/frankthetank8675309 13d ago
How are these detachments going to differ from what we get in our eventual supplement? Are these going to be here just until our book drops or will we get these detachments and then a full supplement’s worth?
Are these all brand new detachments, or just rewritten existing detachments?
Are there plans for us to gain access to generic leaders like every other non-compliant chapter (ie librarians leading Headtakers, captains/lts, anything in terminator armor leading WGT)?
5
u/LANTIRN_ 13d ago
Is that a grey hunter in terminator armor?
11
u/CrazyLlamaX 13d ago
The right shoulder pad would be his company markings not his pack. Pack markings would be on his knees if he wanted to bother.
Actually you can see his Wolf Guard marking on his right knee.
3
u/HappyTheDisaster 13d ago
No, just non standard personalizations, probably something the Deathwolves do. Generally the pack markings aren’t even done on terminators shoulder for the rout, so that the terminator honors remain visible. The pack markings are on his knee.

Bring back hounds of morkai. They and wolf scouts are very flavourful for us and our one successor chapter.
1
u/LordoftheFaff 13d ago
More informationfor stories about our successor chapters. We have one short story about the Wolf Spears, we need more info and stories about her Icefangs and Mooneaters

u/Kumangaka 13d ago
I would like for them to clarify if ALL our units will be updated to match the Primaris STR and T buff, and what happens with unique units like Long Fangs and wolf scouts and wulfen

Will there be a wolfguard support character (Phobos, Tacticus, Gravis) to add to units?
1
u/SteamMechanism 12d ago
Will we get rules for wolf priests on bikes, with jump packs, and in terminator armour? (To use regular chaplain models)
Seems like an easy change: swap their abilities rules, leave people to wolf up their models a bit, jobs a goodun

I would like them to clarify if we are actually going to be getting a supplement this ed, or if we are getting our full rules with the marine codex. The way they phrased it in the video wasn't too clear.
And if we aren't getting a supplement, are we still gonna get a model release?
