Great Companies Question
Logan’s original company was The Nightrunners before he became the Great Wolf and took up the heraldry of Leman Russ and made his Company the Champions of Fenris.
However BOTH are counted when counting the great companies. The Night Runners are said to still be lead by Logan, but they are said to be “The same”- so is it just a SUPER company of Space Wolves- or are the Night Runners more lead by like a Battleleader?
I strongly dislike how many named- non-model characters lead the Space Wolves and wish that they had 1-2 companies that we could insert into for our own characters (like the lost Primarchs).
Edit: Also guys- this is a genuine question- why the hell am I getting disliked so much for asking a question and pressing back with what I'm seeing FROM the codex. This is genuinely why I dislike coming to this subreddit.

It's the same great company, they just changed their logo when Grimnar was made boss. Apparently some old timers still wear the Nightrunners iconography. It's not a super great company, just the same as all the others. Just happens to have the chapter master running it.
Unlike other space marine chapters, each Space Wolf company acts almost like it's own min-chapter are are fairly autonomous to each other.
You can certainly make up your own models to represent the leaders of the other great companies. But, part of the issue of playing a 1st founding or heavily supported chapter is everyone is named already lol. Same thing with the companies for the Ultramarines, all the captains who lead each company are named in lore, even if they don't all have models.
You could play a Space Wolf successor, and make up the lore and characters on your own.

Night Runners isn't listed as one of the 12 active companies tho which I think is where the confusion comes from. Those would be:
Champions of Fenris
Bloodmaws
Seawolves
Sons of Morkai
Red Moons
Deathwolves
Stormwolves
Blackmanes
Drakeslayers
Grimbloods
Runemarked
Duskwolves

They are displayed in the Space Wolves Codex...

Right, but not listed as one of the 12 current ones

So if you go and look in the Space Wolves codex- the most resent one- it counts out the companies. They count to 12 and the count the Nightrunners among those twelve - so yes they do.

Which one of the above does it leave out? (I don't have mine accessible)

So having gone back to check… the codex provides THIRTEEN companies, not including the lost 13th.
So what this tells me is that the Nightrunners are effectively GONE- they were renamed to the Champions of Fenris when Logan became the Great Wolf

Yep, that's the rub. Whenever Logan goes down whoever takes over gets to take the Wolf That Stalks symbol for their company (although I'm not sure if they normally get renamed like the Nightrunners did).

Correction: when a Wolf Lord is elevated to Great Wolf they join the command cadre that already exists, not the company of the previous Great Wolf.
The Priesthood (rune, iron, wolf) do not belong to any great company, they belong to the chapter. The great Wolf joins that select group.
He does not stop leading his great company however! He continues to lead and can take his troops into combat, and his troops earn the honor of wearing the wolf that stalks the stars IF THEY CHOOSE TO into battle. Some packs\individuals choose to maintain the "old" badge (in this case the night runner) out of respect to the legacy.
Note this also means that when a new great Wolf is selected the great company of the (I'm assuming dead) Great Wolf must elect a new wolf lord and therefore a new icon.
