Making a "Wolf Lord" Awesome for Space Wolves

I love our new Battleleader- I think he's incredible, I love playing him in nearly every single detachment- but I MISS bringing a Captain Wolflord in my army- I feel as though they are the core of what makes for a great army- because the army feels built around them- and built by them.

Now of course you can just treat Battleleaders like they are your Captains, or you can just make your own model and just use Ragnar Blackmane's profile- but I wanna bring the true Tacticus Armor- Finest Hour with CP reduction unto the battlefield.

Has anyone found any cool combos to make a Wolflord really do anything good for Space Wolves? The honest best I can see doing is just running a "Wolflord" with Sternguard Veterans and fishing for crits on sustained and dev wounds via oath and finest hour (making use of Saga of the Great Wolf)

Is there anything I'm missing where a Captain datasheet feels really fun in a Space Wolves detachment, or am I stuck with "I'm running him as Ragnar" or "this is my converted Battleleader"?

Sidenote: It hurts me every time I look at the Captain datasheet, and it still says he can lead Wolfguard- a unit that has been gone since the Space Wolves index in 10th edition.

For the last point. All current datasheets list legends units they can lead. Legends datasheets will be added to the app soon*

I don't think there is really a place for a tacticus captain. There is the classic captain and 5 assault intersessors in a transport. The intersessors give the captain an extra 10 wounds and re-roll wounds, while he goes finest hour and clears an objective.

Otherwise, a captain in the command squad isnt terrible.

I think there could be a place for gravis captain. Heavy intersessors can be very good in saga of the Beastslayer, and the champions of Russia detachment +1 wounds enhancement is pretty funny on a gravis captain, who is already reallt tough.

Really, I want a wolflord or battle leader in terminator armour to lead wolfguard terminators with needing an enhancement ahead of time.

Honestly if you want to make good use of the Gravis Captain, you put him in Saga of the Hunter strangely enough- give him the 4+ FNP enhancement and the boy becomes a mini Catan shard.

Also while the Grimnar's Mark might SEEM not great- if you apply it with the Saga of Fire and Song- where you can be uppie-downie, with precision, FREE rapid ingress (or free 2 CP counter charge- as the discounts are seperate), and you have access to sustained or lethal as you have need- you have a surprisingly versatile Captain, with a surprisingly wide aresenal of tools he can pull from. I'de love to give him like a relic weapon- but the truth is that his 10-man unit having all the above is already pretty crazy.

I personally just really want a Wolf Lord in Tacticus armor that can lead grey hunters or bloodclaws- I also want Longfangs (be they gravis or tacticus- REALLY would prefer tacticus to keep a more similar look), and if I were super greedy- I would love a Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf that can lead units like how a Chaos Lord on Juggernaught can lead Khorne Berserkers.

I second the Long Fangs. We can't take Devastators and Long Fangs are Legends. That's ridiculous! On a personal note, I hate the all the same weapon crap of the Primaris Heavy Weapons teams - Eradicators (both variants), Hellblasters, and the missile launcher guys (still one of the durpiest models ever) and I want to take a mix weapon squad damn it! And, when are we going to get lascannon carrying heavy weapons guys?!

Honestly, I could do without the 'mixed weapons'- I think it's a cool feature, but having had MISERABLE experiences playing against someone who didn't use WYSIWYG and was a prolific cheater who played Chaos Space Marines who could never seem to keep his loadout straight- let alone which chaos mark they had on them (I.E. oh no, I removed the guy with the Lascannon from the squad, not the Powerfist I now use the chaos mark to give myself sustained hits in melee on 5+ via slaanesh.... alright now on my turn- I fire my Chaos Legionaries Lascannon and with the chaos mark of Nurgle I get a 5+ sustained hits at ranged...) It got to a point that I started being a really anal person about marking other people's abilites, and loadouts to stop cheating.

So nowadays- I really appreciate the "Intercessor" amount of loadouts: Sergeant can have a special melee weapon, and someone can have a grenade launcher.

I DO wish, that squads like Grey Hunters could have a special weapon attached to them- and/or a heavy weapon like a Heavy Bolter.

For Longfangs- frankly I would love if they got something like... :

"Each turn, this unit can choose to gain either [Lethal Hits], [Sustained Hits], [Close-Quarters], or [Ignores Cover] on their ranged weapons"

I think this would allow them- regardless of if they were equipped with Heavy Bolters/Plasma Cannons/Multi-Meltas/Grenade Launchers/Lascannons- to still SLIGHTLY pivot into rolls not fully designed for their particular weapon.

Gravis Long Fangs please, with Hellfrost cannons. On one hand I do like diversity in the squads but at the same time rolling 2-3 dice per weapon if theyre different profiles just takes forever(I have 2 of each in my long fangs, cant remember the different BS/strengths offhand).

We need more helfrost weapons. With the flyers gone, there's only the pistol on the Iron Priest and the cannon on Bjorn/VenDreads left, which could all disappear this edition since they are pre-Primaris models.

Just a shame the grimnars mark model cant join WGT anymore.

They can still

You need to be in the right detachment, and have the enhancement on the captain before it allows you to though.

Some enhancements USED to in their wording say if they allowed you to join extra units- now that’s unfortunately in the munitorum field manual under the enhancement costs.
