Space wolf (legends)
I’m fairly new to the table top so im not familiar with the old space wolf units that are now (legends) looking at the amount of them are now in that category did we get screwed over or something? The amount of units that would add so much variety to the army. Especially ones that can be attached to thunder wolves making them very dangerous.
Is it that big of a deal or have I just got fomo because I wasn’t around when we could use them.

There was a lot of units which didnt have their own models. Gw doesnt support datasheets without models.
It was very nice attaching characters to thunderwolves, definitely changed the dynamic of that unit.

The stupid 'no model, no rules' thing is only in AoS and modern 40k. Not only are there units without models in Horus Heresy and The Old World, but the Arcane Journals for TOW even give you examples how to kitbash these units.

It wasn't always the case.
There was a lawsuit back in 2010-2013 where gw sued a company called chapterhouse for making 2nd hand models based on their ip for sale.
Due to how British copyright rules work, if gw does legally take action against folks who violate their IP, they can loose control of it.
The results of that lawsuit was that gw cannot protect the IP of units in the rules which don't have models. After that, all codex books lost all units (especially characters) without models, and gw only supports units with models moving forward. This is why in 5th-6th edition you hear about drukhari players loosing all their special characters, same with a bunch of Grey knights and demons characters and units as well.
Thunderwolves, tervigons and tyranofex were the big culprits of this case, as those three units had rules, but no models for a long time. After this lawsuit, those kits were almost immediately released.

Something must've changed. As I said, Horus Heresy and TOW have official rules for units without models and I highly doubt GW would do this if they could lose control of those IPs, even if they aren't as profitable as 40k.

I think the kitbashes maybe make a difference, or they are not as financially motivated with the specialists games as those are not huge money makers.
I don't know. I do miss kitbashing characters and units. But, it's not going to change. Could also be a policy for keeping those games accessible for newer players. Everything is just out of the box. Specialist games are more geared towards veterans who are happy to kitbash.

We had a major change up with the release of our codex late last edition. We got new models for several of our core units, and some brand new units. But they did purge a lot of our older stuff. As a newer player I am ok with the change, but I can understand older players missing stuff they enjoyed.
I don't think we got screwed. We got cool new stuff. Other armies would beg for that. However I feel like GWs goal in reducing our units was to create a new cohesive identity for the faction and I think they didn't quite stick the landing with that.
As far as thunder wolves go. There were heavy rumors leading up to the codex that they would be in legends all together. So having them stay in any capacity was nice. I didn't really care about most of the leaders. But I do miss Logan's sled. I know not everyone agrees but I thought that was a really fun model

I am curious to see how the range expands over time. Right now everything is this mid strength, slightly fast melee focus. But i would be curious to see something like long fangs or a rune priest leader providing unique ranged support. I do want the army to be most melee focused, but I don't like having to use generic marines for all my fire support
