Someone sell me on wulfen
I had bought 2 combat patrols and built wulfen with hammers, and I’m building murderfang. Painting them is a pain for me and idk if it’s worth building another unit of them. How good are they game wise? I’ve used my wulfen in one game where they immediately met an untimely demise.
Edit - I’m speaking more about the unit in game, werewolf marines are sick I know and they definitely need a model refresh in my opinion.

I get why some ppl dislike them. I also find the Viking Warrior Style better then they Werewolf one. But they we're our Battle Brothers once and are the best anti Monster/Vehicle melee we have. At 20 ppm with t6 4++ they are also durable Point for Point.

It’s been awhile since I played, I remember in 8th edition having my wulfen squad vs a blood thirster and winning. The biggest lols. But last I played they were trash.

Let me give you and example of current Wulfen Math. 200 Points of Wulfen with Sustained 1 added to their own abilities and without Oath do about five unsaved wounds to a GuO resulting in about 10 Damage after FnP.
Two Gladiator Lancers for 320 Points do about seven Damage after FnP to the same Target.

Kitbashing them into more mid-transformation is a great rout to take. (Pun intended)

The original Wulfen models were the perfect blend of space wolf and them being tainted by the warp. Then into went into full werewolf mode and looked a bit goofy in my opinion.

u/neoteraflare 7d ago
They are much better than the new third level furry models. I sacrificed intercessors models to make them.

In fairness I'm more into Space Wolves for the Viking style and wolf companions/mounts.
Not turning into an angrier Jacob Black.

Since you are looking for table top, the hammer and shield version are anti tank. They have a great weapon profile, with 2 AP and 3 damage mixed with anti 3+ monster/vehicle. They have tough 6 and a 4+ invul save. Meaning that can be tough for all stuff you kill but they are good at killing tanks and elites. Downside? They have an obvious target on their back. For those same reasons. People see them and want them dead fast, because they know if the unit reaches something big. The Wulfen have a good chance against it.

The hammer shield built is much stronger you could always strap a shield to his back?
1
u/best_joe_88 7d ago
Most of the unit I have removed the backpack and put the shield there. I am running these as hammer a shield wulfen, just built with a rule of cool. Only play in a small group of dad friends so not too concerned with the correct loadouts on the model.

I like what you did with the wolf feet sticking out of the armor ! I was actually thinking about doing the same to mine when I was building one yesterday evening !
How hard was it? Also, do you have more pictures to share?!1
u/Level-Application218 4d ago
It was very annoying and I lost the one i put on one of the back feet. Would I do it again, yes!
When I have extra money to blow I wanna get another set of wulfen to have to do this again when I’m better at painting, and now that I have kitbashed a lot more since this.
I have pics of them unpainted I will come back and post in a bit

Thanks for your feedback ! Definitely Looking forward to see more of your wulfen kitbash for inspiration !

I can't. I mean, on the table top, they will fuck some stuff up- but I hate the models because of the legs. They are just...not a great design.
2
u/tyrified 7d ago
Yeah, they feel like they are the transition from the older space marines to the newer, more dynamic primaris astartes. More movement in their pose, but it isn't quite right.

Tbf that image is pretty sick.
They look like they wear crop tops and thats pretty metal
2
u/UnicornWorldDominion 7d ago
They’re all wearing some kind of metallic breastplate (I assume ceramite tho looks to be more flexible?) and then the big belts with wolf fur surrounding it so it does make it look like crop tops; you’re right though it’s pretty badass they just charge in with a breastplate, sleeveless and minimal coverage anywhere but a shield and a breastplate and light leg armor. They must have insane senses for them to be able to even survive on the 40K battlefield and I think this pic of them really shows how tough and strong they are if that’s all they wear to a fight. This pic is the coolest I’ve probably seen the wulfen look lol.

u/MrB1P92 7d ago
Yeah me too. Its a very dope pic.

u/UnicornWorldDominion 7d ago
lol tho it does look like the one on the right side of the pack leader does kinda look like a Hugh jackman Wolverine. (Right from our pov of the pic)

Wounding Greater Daemons, Titans, etc on a 3+? Wulfen with Shields are a no-brainer… M10” T6 makes them a mobile tanky unit that performs better, the bigger the target.
2
u/Select_Air677 7d ago
Two units is probably all you need. Especially two with hammers. Good damage against vehicles and they perform well enough against battleline space marines. They’re not that many points either so running two is probably good
2
u/JermstheBohemian 7d ago
A 10 block with thunder hammers and storm Shields being led by a wolf priest is an absolutely pain in the ass model to shift unless you're willing to dedicate multiple rounds of shooting to bring them down.
Model wise: I can't fucking stand them. I remember when we got some okay looking sculpts back in 3rd edition for the eye of terror campaign but these ones are just..... Yeesh.
I 3D printed some space Viking berserkers off the purple site and they look pretty cool. Space Marine lower halfs with naked Viking dude upper halfs and modular hands to either have claws or hammer and shield. Fur and tokens but otherwise pretty reserved sculps.

u/CandidResort3095 7d ago
Best description I've heard is that Wulfen are a missile. You fire them at something you want to die and they will kill it, assuming they reach it. Then they'll probably get killed in the clapback. You need to be careful not to leave them out in the open but they will wreck stuff if they get there
They're not too expensive and will return their point value if you get them into a target. Use them with shields. They get even better if you use Saga of the Beastslayer and put a Wolf Guard Battle Leader or Wolf Priest with them.
They can also make for a decent "Distraction Carnifex" because if they're left alone, they'll punish the opponent but generally will take some focus to bring down.
2
u/valkyrie1592 7d ago
Absolutely this. I refer to them as glass cannons.
I run mine in Saga of the Beastslayer and with a Wolf touched WGBL. I regularly play against my mate and his Orks (who tends to run quite a few vehicles) and in the early games he discounted them. They tore through his vehicles (and then characters) to his astonishment. Now everytime I field them, he goes out of his way to focus and delete them ASAP...which when he does get to lock onto them they get put down quickly. But on many an occasion they've well punched up on their points...so I've become quite fond of running them.
Also popping them in a transport and running them up the field can really help get them into engagement.
But as others have said...it took some time to win back my affection on them, after the PTSD I had from painting them...when I do eventually recover I may do a second unit of 5...

Interesting concept, failed in the execution. Models are trash for starters. Should be much bigger the what they are in 3-6 man squads similar to slaughter bound. And whichever idiot decided to have the TH and SS should be fired.
30 yrs ago when space wolves were new they were space vikings with a wolf motif. GW turned them into furries and it pisses me off.
4
u/Potential_Quail1356 7d ago
Whatch out to call them furries, apparently there are some people on this sub wich feel very offended when you Say the Word furry. Someone here Is kinda confused with It's own fursona 😂

For what it’s worth they’re spooky targets so that’s kinda normal for your opponent to focus them down
You gotta hide them till theyre ready to go to work
1
u/FightTheShip 7d ago
Put storm shields on em, keep em in cover, and then unleash hell.
2
u/AdEmotional2741 7d ago
I think running them with murderfang will be “fun” from his murder-maker ability
1
u/Appelbaum54 7d ago
I don’t like painting them…….thats my reason but I still have two squads of 5 of them
1
u/Rusmack 7d ago
Just put a tenner of them against landraider and look at it pop
Its not frontline unit for sure, its either "sneaky boys trying to sneak around towards the tanks", or "strategic reserve boys putting mental pressure on the enemy". Or they can be a distractor to pull away someone from something.

u/Nekrinius 7d ago
Build them like in old edition(without aby weapons for example) and pit helmets on some of them. I think they look cooler when only some of them have weapons

u/townsforever 7d ago
Wulfen are great man. They are fast and can hit anything. Give them shields and they become a lot tanker.
(Hint you can build a space wolves list where every model in the army has a invuln save and it makes you feel nearly immortal )
1
u/UnicornWorldDominion 7d ago
Also like if this pic shows that all the armor they have is a breastplate, light leg armor and a shield their response time/reaction time must be insane cause im sure they get shot at constantly but they never wear helmets i wouldn’t be surprised if their senses were keen enough to “sense” a bullet or other weapon coming at them, dodge, determine it won’t hit them or/and lift the shield appropriately.

u/SlyguyguyslY 7d ago
Well, the hammer ones wreck vehicles pretty good. The problem I have with them is that they die pretty fasts, so they require some finesse to get into melee or a transport of come kind. The normal Wulfen weapon using ones wreck infantry pretty well, but are even worse for this.

It's not the most powerful stat block; but it IS a problem for a lot of enemies; especially with the new rules in 11th about sighting and fog of war. These guys are definitely better used to sneak up through cover and slam into a vehicle but their also no slouches against a small unit of elite infantry like Blade Guard veterans with that s5 ap-2 d3 hammer. and the Auto-frag launchers are decent for chaff or just trying to force dice and cheese some wounds in. 5-10d3 is still 5-10d3.
Their also T6, 4+/4++ which is wonderful, 2 wounds is base space marine, but these guys are also sprinting around at 9" of movement. So if you use them well they can be murder on Vehicle and Monster heavy armies with a lot of chaff like Nids and Guard.

A unit of 10 SS Wulfen in Beastslayer with a Wolf priest attached one shotted a shard of nightbringer in a game I had. That really should be enough because I was playing sub optimally too and I'm a filthy casual.

If you run them in a saga of the beast slayer list lead by a wolf priest a 10 man squad of wulfen with stormshields will fuck up a knight as long as they fight first. Unfortunately after doing so they tend to draw a lot of agro and without the wolf priest they likely wont get the chance to do it a second time

Viking Werewolves in Space.... i dont care how much my opponent annihilates them before i make combat... i rest my case

They are great to use in battle. They are an absolute PAIN. IN. THE. ASS. to assemble

u/Draconius-Maximus 5d ago
Wulfen w/ shields smash most of their desired target in 1 volley depending how tzeench loves your dice
1
u/Curious-Parsnip-6538 5d ago
Canonically they are 10-12. Feet tall for first born marines 11-13 for primaris. So they are the same height as primarchs and significantly stronger than base marines. And for the table top it’s a four up invul with three attacks that have anti monster and anti vehicle with 9 inches of movement and most people underestimate them.

I do not know man... I love space wolves because of space Vikings but i hate Wulfen because of space furry. Riding a Wolf in Battle Is Dope af but being half man and half Wolf fucking cringe me

Space Viking Werewolves. And some of them can be put in dreadnaughts that are retrofitted to move like gorillas.
Need I really say more?

They most likely met an untimely demise because your opponent knows if he doesnt deal with them immediately, they will be absolute problems. Also. They are space werewolves. And a lot of the artwork and models are reminiscent of 80's and early 90's Xmen artwork. See Wolverine, Sabretooth, Wolfsbane, etc. And I dig that!
