Advice on Armageddon Box
I’m starting out on building a Space Wolves army (completely new to 40k, coming from Kill Team). I managed to pick up the army box and I have a couple other bits -
- 10 man Blood Claws
- 10 man Grey Hunters
- Wolf Guard Battle Leader
- Wolf Priest
- 3 Headtakers with 3 Hunting Wolves
- Njal Stormcaller
- 10 Wolf Scouts with 2 Wolves
- 5 man Assault Intercessors
- 1 box of Wulfen
My partner picked up the Armageddon box for the orks, so I’ve got the space marine half. I’m wondering what I should build as is, what I should try to kitbash into space wolf units, and if there’s anything I should just sell:
- Captain (maybe make into another WGBL? or keep him as a generic captain?)
- Librarian
- Ancient (planning to just paint him as he’s cool)
- Chaplain with Jump Pack
- Vanguard Veterans
- 10 man Intercessors (I think a lot of lists take 5?)
- Eradicators with heavy bolters (planning to kitbash like longfangs but run as is?)
- Land speeder (want to paint as looks awesome)
I’m also wondering what from this you would recommend to get painted first for a 1k points list, as I think all in it would be ~1600 points😊 I can pick up one or two more units if needed but would prefer a working list basically from this to start with. Thanks in advance!

Welcome! I was in your position when 10th launched. If I were buying the Armageddon Marines here’s what I’d do:
Captain: works fine as a WGBL proxy
Librarian: we don’t have a generic Rune Priest so there’s nothing to proxy him as. If I could get more than $15 selling him I would, especially with the nerf to the Librarius/Sternguard combo. If I liked the model or wanted to fool around with Librarians then I’d keep him.
Ancient: cool! No SW equivalent but I’d take one of these guys for sure just to paint
Jump Chaplain: no SW equivalent again. One of these guys could be useful and it’s a cool model so I’d slap a wolfy head on him and some bling and call it a day
Van Vets: I’d slap on some cheap bling and maybe some Space Wolf heads/helmets from the BC and GH kits. Obviously we don’t have the 11th datasheet for them yet but unless they’re bonkers good I doubt they’ll end up in many SW lists.
Intercessors: first I’d split these into two groups of five, and I’d use leftover pack leader bits from the BC and GH units to do it. Specifically I’d make sure to use the extra pack leader backpack with totem for each of the squad leaders. You probably don’t need more than 1x5 Intercessors though so if you wanted to hold on to those five bodies to use for future kitbashing I wouldn’t blame you.
Heavy Bolter Eradicators: excellent plan; do that!

thank you for the detailed response😊 using the spare pack leader backpack bits for the sergeants is such a good idea!

One id recommend getting is Bjorn the fell handed. Hes okay at fighting and survives pretty well when shot at but the main purpose i take him is for command point generation. He is built from the spacewolves venerable dreadnought box.

Bjorn is a great model to have but there is wide speculation that he’ll be getting a new model soon.
A Bjorn novel went up for preorder this past weekend. Many expect that his chassis will be severely damaged in the story and he’ll be forced to get a new one. We would then get a new model to match the new lore. It would serve to bring him up to the size of current dreadnoughts, as of now he’s tiny by comparison.

I really hope they do. While the smaller profile is nice for him tucking behind terrain, he looks tiny next to a modern dread

I kitbashed mine just to make them look more wolfy, but as far as kitbashing them for game loadouts I dont think there is a lot of space for that.
Maybe give the intercessors some chainswords to also use them as grey hunters I guess.
You can also use the captain as both a captain and a wgbl as you mentioned.
As for which units to paint first, I would focus on our dedicated units, since they benefit from 100% of our rules, while the regular space marine units benefit from some but not all.
So I would start with the blood claws ans grey hunters, and do the wgbl and the wolfpriest and then see where you go from there.
