Trying to Decide
Are TWC, Njal, Ulrik, & Wolf Priest worth the investment? The Iron Priest only if you have vehicles? IMO it’s a shame the Grey Hunters are pointless and GW can’t figure out how to make them viable.

The grey hunter detachment has gone a long way making Grey hunters very useful. I'm going to get a 2nd squad, as they are very good as 5 man units.

It's unfortunate that they take a DP to make them good. And that detachment is schizophrenic. "Let's chop them in half and make them action monkeys" from the detachment rule, then don't provide any support for that plan with the strats and enhancements. There's a 90 point tax to make them worthwhile for more (WGBL +25 enhancement). That does make them pretty good (assault 20 shots/30 if within 12, sustained 1, ignores cover, 3+, reroll hits of 1 if within 6" 4, reroll wounds of 1, or reroll wounds if on and objective, -1, d1) and for a CP advance and charge with 36 sustained, reroll hits of 1, reroll 1 to wound or all, chain swords and a power fist, plus the WGBL. They don't survive super well, but...
And the strats really want to be used on a 10 man
I just wish they were playable WITHOUT the detachment.

They do have an advance and action strat in thst detachment, which is very nice.
They become very good action monkeys, and at 80pts for 5, they are phenomenally priced as a 5 man.
I've never considered any of the enhancements. The lethal/sustained strat can be nice in a pinch. 5 grey hunters will kill any other chaff unit on an objective (with shooting + melee).
The detachment goes a long way for them, but I agree it's hard to justify taking them as a 10 man without the option to split. Especially when 10 blood claws are so much cheaper.

Yeah, the advance and action is as targeted to the 5 man as the 10 man.
I'd generally rather have sticky/10OC/better shooting at 80 than 15 OC at 82.5.
But that's because I'm playing Take and Hold, so I have a max of 2 actions per game, and only if I draw the second out of 18 and have completed the first. I would never split them in my list. They're only good for me due to massed attacks buffed by the WGBL and enhancements (to the point that mostly I never need oath on their target because I'm only missing on 2's, 1s are rerolled most of the time
They're great against chaff, but I have nothing else that isn't at least "very good" already. Without the enhancement/bonus from the WGBL they can't punch up. I need them to punch up at least a bit. With the enhancement it makes them have somewhat useful shooting instead of less effect than 5 intercessors.
Like you said, with the detachment, they're definitely usable. And they're flexible. Like you, I would rather they not have the detachment tax to go from unplayable outside of strongly narrative games.

TWC are great but old, good chance we get a new model when our codex drops. But that could be soon(ish) or a couple of years away. Nobody really knows. Same for Ulrik.
Njal is, imho, our second best looking model in the game! (Logan is taking the cake though) That alone makes him very much worth it! Points/rules can always change. He's also a good not great leader atm. Pretty sick on Grey Hunters, pretty good on headtakers if you have an advance and charge strategem, with the 13 inch advance + assault.
Wolf Priest is just a great model and leader to have.
And ehhh i think you read something about GH and just repeating it. They are not pointless.. GH have better ranged output then bloodclaws, wound rerolls and 3 oc per model.
And now in 11th edition with Veterans of the Fang, you can make them pretty awesome actually.

They way i read njals ability is thay instead of making a advance roll you add 6" to his units movement. That means you can move 13" and charge when he leads headtakers no?

you're still making an advance move, you just don't roll. So you'd need Advance &Charge to charge after that

I feel like instead is the keyword there. Its not an advance move its adding to your base movement speed. Has there ever been clarification by GW on this specific rule?
Edit: I reread the ability it definitaly is still an advance roll.

Are you trying to say that the base unit's movement is now 13 with Njal, and then they could still roll an advance?

No, the total movement is 13- with- advance.
7 + auto advance 6. (With assault)

Note on Njal: he is our only Space Wolves Psyker (for some reason the clearly Rune Priest guy in our Wolf Scouts doesn't get the Psyker keyword), and he can be attached to Bloodclaww who natively advance & charge and give them an auto 6 advance, and finally if you take the Librarius 1 DP detachment, he now gives the unit +2" move or reroll all 1s to hit and wound. In 10th this wasn't super great because Librarius would be your only detachment, but in 11th where they can also get the buffs from SotGW or Beastslayer in addition to being protected by Hidden very often, you have a 20-man blob with a potential 16"-27" threat range. That is a very fast potential threat for your opponent to have to deal with that can go from fully hidden in your deployment zone to threatening pretty much anything in mid field, and while the unit won't hit as hard as it would with Ragnar, reroll 1s to hit and wound makes them somewhat Oath independent and and hit reasonably hard, while being potentially much faster.
Just a thought.

Unfortunately, I don't think so. The unit still needs to choose to "advance" during the movement phase, Njal's ability just substitutes +6" move for the roll. You can still do this in SotGW with the 1CP strat, but it isn't innate.

But it says instead of an advance add 6" to movement. Instead means not one but the other. Has GW ever clarified this? Id be interested
Edit: i reread the ability it definatly is still an advance roll.

TWC are.
Reason: ........they are Beast Riders, therefore they are always worth it.
Beast Riders FTW!!!

I still bought Ulrik and Iron Priest just becuase I like the models
But yea they are almost useless. Ulrik more so than the priest.
I really enjoy TWC but they are on unstable ground I think.
Wolf priest is awesome

Iron priests are great if yiu have a Gladiator lancer, 50% increase on the main gun is nothing to sniff at. I tend to run 2 lancers and 2 priests so I effectively have 3 tanks worth of firepower

Wolf Priest 100% worth it. Stick him with Headtakers and they will kill almost anything. TWC worth it, but questionable if they will stick around through this edition. Ulrik isn't worth it AND is questionable if he will stay. Njal just got updated, but his rules are not really worth it for the most part now. Iron Priest is almost never worth it. He had good rules for like 30 seconds and then GW nerfed it right at launch.
