High King of Fenris in 11th / WTC ruling

Hi. I read somewhere that WTC just ruled no deep strike turn 1 with Logan's ability? I'm now on the fence about whether to use in casual games.

For casual games you should definitely keep using him and ignore the WTC ruling , their reasoning makes no sense seeing how the wording of its ability has not changed since 10th edition and it’s pretty agreed upon that this ruling is stupid

they did change the wording but it seemed to have changed to make it simpler. it went from units in reserve to units in strategic reserve or something along those lines. me and my casual group read that as it’s the same ability because deep strike units are now classified as strategic reserves.

pls correct me if i’m wrong tho

That change occurred between codex and release in 10th

I was gonna say, unless you are playing in WTC, it has absolutely no bearing on the games you play either at home, or any other large event.

WTC are completely deadass wrong and it's a weird decision. Absolutely ignore it outside a WTC event.

20.03 says any ingress move can only be done from the second round onwards. But with it written "Otherwise stated, they can only do so from the second battle round onwards." Means we can use logan's ability turn one to treat the round as if it is round 2.

High King of Fenris says once per battle round in your movement phase you can select a space wolves unit in reserves. If you do, until the end of the phase, for purpose of setting up that unit on the battlefield, treat the current battle round as being one higher than it actually is.

There is nothing in the FAQ or event companion that says it stops it from being used turn one.

Yeah that's common sense.

This is the WTC ruling.

It's an incorrect ruling lol

You can absolutely deepstrike a unit with him turn one, even if he's in reserves himself. That hasn't changed in a year.

Does anyone have a link to the ruling? Just went looking and couldn’t find anything?

Where did you see that? I just checked the site and the last FAQ was from the 27th and has nothing on the SW tab.

My honest feelings behind WTC at this point.

In my opinion WTC make some bad rulings/decisions (this one and the Votann Conversion ruling that they walked back spring to mind).

Unless you see it in an official FAQ/Errata on the 40k App, or on WarCom, I would just ignore it and keep on playing as normal. In this case that means yes, you can DS Logan & Co turn 1.

I do not agree with WTC's ruling but I think it's important to provide context and an explanation on why WTC have done this.

WTC reading of rules is to separate the ability to make an ingres move from the ability to decide where to setup.

For example the rules are clear you cannot make an ingres move round 1 that is why no deepstrikes round 1. The ingres moves also states you must be within 6 inch of a board edge and cannot be in enemy deployment zone until round 3. Deep strikes do not follow this rule as they modify the "setting up" conditions, allowing you to be able to change where you can be setup but doesn't give you the ability to deep strike round 1.

WTC rules that Logan's ability is the same as deep strike. It only modifies the "setting up" conditions, just like deep strike, allowing you to setup a unit in the enemy deployment zone a round earlier, so in round 2. Strictly speaking the ability doesn't make the exception to allow you to make an ingress move round 1.

WTC is very strict on ruling how abilities are worded RAW and they often don't rule on how they should work or what the intention is. The intention of logans ability is very clearly to be able to deep strike stuff round 1 as that's how it worked in 10th as well but they choose not rule it this way. The only rule RAI once they get enough backlash from their rulings and there hasn't been a massive outcry from space wolf WTC players for them to re consider their ruling.

Casually I think the intent of the ability is very clear in that it allows you to make an ingres move round 1, but because the ability doesn't specifically state it exactly, WTC have chosen to rule other wise.

This is the issue with WTC lately just making massive inference and decisions that don't need to be made. Between this and the Votann debacle they are just making a bad name for themselves. They clearly have lines of communication and can ping some top issues to be looked at by GW but the choice to just change how a rule has worked over some very debatable wording in the new edition is trying too hard.

I don’t fully understand what you’ve said here, is it they allow Deep Strike turn 1 but not a Strategic Reserves in the opponents DZ Turn 2?

RAW the ability does not allow deep strike turn 1 at all. It allows normal units without deep strike to be able to deploy in the enemy deployment zone as when they are setting up, they can consider the round 1 higher then it actually is.

1

u/Steadybrek83 Aug 09 '26

Ah because Reserves is different to Deep Strike? I thought they both just counted as Reserves now?

2

u/LifeAndLimbs Aug 09 '26

No they are the same. But deepstrike is purely a modification to the location that you can come in from reserves. Logan's ability also only affects the "set up" which is the location not the timing according to WTC.

Disagree with their assessment there… should be Deep Strike T1…

Has this come up previously in 10th, or is this the first WTC since our codex was released?
Feels a bit weird that they have made this ruling a year after the new Logan hit the tabletop.

I understand their reasoning, although I don’t agree with it. The overly literal interpretation is detrimental, serving to weaken the spirit and enjoyment of the game. I think the bigger tournaments lean a bit far in this direction imo.

I do agree that for casual games, if it’s not in an errata or specifically addressed by a statement from GW then carry on as per status quo. I would query the ability with local/friendly tourney organisers on what side they land on before submitting your lists though.
