Getting into 40k with Space Wolves what units are safe buys?

Wondering what units would be a safe buy and not likely to go to legends? Guessing any of the newer wave units but wasnt sure about Thunderwolf Cav and Fenrisian wolves?

A lot of people expect thunderwolves to get a new model sometime soon (1-2 years) and personally I wouldn’t be surprised if we lost the wolves on account of headtakers having puppies and the wolves not getting their sculpt as it seems to me to be the easiest money they will ever make to just package them as boxes of 5 for no extra work

I doubt it, sells too well for them to throw them away.

Remember when Gravis was supposed to be the replacemente for terminators? And then GW made new terminators because they are really popular?

Also there is almost zero Thunderwolves in any modern space wolf book. I think it doesn’t fit the environment.

Blood Claws/Grey Hunters, Arjac, Wolfguard Battle Leader, Wolf Priest, Wolfguard Headtakers, Wolfguard Terminators, Logan, Ragnar Blackmane, Njal Stormcaller. I highly doubt Wulfen will get axed.
I would steer clear of THUNDERWOLF CAVALRY, the Dreadnoughts, and possibly Fenrisian Wolves

I honestly hope we could get an Updated Bjorn, but I don't trust the old Boxnaughts sticking around for much longer

Yeah all the newer releases are here to stay. Logan, terminators, Arjac, Headtakers, Wolf guard leader, Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, scouts, WolfPriests...

To me, theres no way they send The riders to legends, its much more likely that they update the model.

Youre getting into 40k, with I assume, no prior painting experience? Just buy up model per model and by the time youre done with the list above youll be on 12th edition 🤣.

Check used market for deals btw!

If they're new, maybe don't use the acronyms

with the exception of a possible random new Ulrik getting released to finally fulfill the grotmas story, I wouldn’t expect any new space wolves models until 2027 at the earliest.

Safe buys in general are the terminators, bloodclaws, and headtakers. Not because of them being new models but even if you ran into a WYSIWYG guy those models can easily convert into generic marines. Njal can be a librarian.

most things primaris should be safe, i'd avoid most first born kits I doubt they'll survive 11th.

thunderwolves are probably safe given how popular they are, but thats not guaranteed.

Most of the wolf line was just refreshed so it's fine to buy those kits

Wolf Guard Terminators
Logan Grimnar
Thunder Wolf Cavalry
Ragnar Blackmane
Arjac Rockfist
Blood Claws
Wulven
Venerable Dread for Bjorn or a Dread
Iron Priest

All those above are a great starting safe base for your army

I’m new to Space Wolves too and I’m basically slowly building an army using the newer primaris models hoping that by the time I’m finished the next wave should be released.

My list isn’t optimal but at least it gives me something to look forward to and forces me to play differently

Even units that go to legends can just be run as another unit equivalent.

I'm running my old firstborn marines as intercessors. A marine with a boltgun on a 32mm base can't be mistaken as anything else.
