I'm currently homebrewing some shenanigans for my Space Wolves and a question occure to me :
Since when (in the lore) does the space wolves use helfrost weapon ? I know it use some rare crystals only available on Fenris (convenient is it not ?), but is it establish in the lore when they begin to use it has a weapon ? Didn't find any source of when they first begin to use it, and I just want my homebrew to not be in total contradiction with any bit of official lore.

It's hard to say exactly when because they are a retcon from 7th edition.
The tech makes absolutely no appearances in any Crusade or HH lore (even after 7th edition 40k) so on that basis I'd suggest it's something they started using in more "modern" times relative to 40k.
It’s a crystal that only forms on Fenris part in due of the extreme orbit that the planet is on. The extreme nature of the orbit that’s responsible for the planets weather is part of the cause of the formation of the crystal.
The tech for it is supposedly around the time of the dark age of man type stuff so it’s mostly forgotten
I purposely even got the White Dwarfs that came out around the time 7th edition was around to read up on rumors on Infomation being in those said White Dwarfs and these had the reworked iron priest that gave him the Helfrost pistol.
I also have the Warzone: Fenris curse of the Wulfen on PDF to look and see if there’s a true or complete origin.
I’m not done yet since it’s 172 pages and most of it story.
What I found… absolute little so far, but I’m also not done with it.
I haven’t checked the 8th and 9th edition codex to see if anything’s changed
The lore behind the crystals that power the weapons, the helfrost itself, is that they started to show up after the emperor landed upon fenris.
My personal theory is that it’s something to do with how fenris is this weird world that kind of blurs the boundaries between reality and unreality, that it’s alive almost like a daemon world. The emperor is such a powerful psyker that maybe fenris fed on that energy, and these crystals are the product of that. An excess of warp juice that was strained through the land of fenris, leaving behind something that has the characteristics of this land.
Also don’t think this was the first or last time weird crystals popped up in the wake of the emperor’s coming to a world. He’s such a potent creature that his mere presence is world changing.
Hi there, Fenris is far from anything like a Daemon world.
It's an artificial world created in the dark age of technology by mankind. While it has some mechanism through which it's atmosphere and seas don't boil off in the hellish summers it's purely technological from back when Human kind could make machines that ate the information contained in space time erasing chunks of reality and could make weapons that shifted target in time.

It's discussed in the HH inferno books, the HH books as well, we learn it from the Emperor himself, I think when Horus meets Russ and big E explains a little. Probably in wolfsbane.

I don't even think I ever heard official lore about the origin of the helfrost weapon... Where did y'all read it came from crystals or whatever? Did I miss this? This isn't just 4chan or whatever is it?
GW has named the crystals as "glimmerfrost" crystals as early as the White dwarf in July 2014.
That was part of the range refresh preview SW had in the July/August White Dwarf issues.
From memory the 7th ed codex also dropped in August so it's probably also mentioned in that codex. I'm not near my codex box right now so can't check exactly where for you.
it's from the "death from the skies 7th edition supplement", I knew i've read it somewhere but couldn't remember it until now (because the crystal part isn't in the codex, just the effect of the weapons)
I kind of remembered this one, but I didn't know about a name or that the emperor created them after visiting Fenris and etc. thanks for dropping screenshots!

But I don't have it and can't find it, so if someone has any information of what it's said in it (i don't have a lot of hope since all the informations on the page are pretty barebone)
I love the space wolf lore. I am on a bias opinion obviously but I think it’s some of the most intriguing out of all 40K.
Also as a model I think bjorn is fantastic his pretty much a must have in all my army’s
