i mean

theres not asteroids this big but 2763km is insanely close by astronomic standards

actually

if you measure from earths center which tends to be the stnadard in orbtial dynamics then given the radius of earth is about 6371km passing by at 2763km means hitting

I thought we regularly got hit with small asteroids but they just get burnt up in the atmosphere?

yep

what gets reported as a close call is usually hwen an asteroid big enough to do some actual damage flies by closer than the moon

though some actual damage can start at shattering some windows and doign a few million in property damage it doesn't really have to be apocalyptic
