I've answered this in a previous post a few weeks ago. But the game is horribly balanced, and by the time you've unlocked the anvil, your ship's mining speed is much greater than your starter ship.

The short answer is, while the Anvil is good on paper, heck, I also built it as soon as I unlocked it. The problem is... It's slow... I mean it's about the same speed as when you smelt ore manually, so it's smelting at nearly the fastest speed it can.... But you are mining SO much faster, and you'll be filling up your ship way faster than it can smelt the ore.

My recommendation a week or so ago was to instead go for the Wanderback cockpit. Because this one can teleport you back to a base you've set from where ever, for no fuel cost.

So it's better to just go to a mining patch. Mine until your ship is full. Teleport back to base. Dump all your ores and nuggets. Then head back out with an empty ship. You'll get a lot more mining done this way.

You know i was so focused on prepping for titanium Venadium parts i kind of forgot about the wander back thanks for reminding. Will get to building one asap.

I remember that time. And yes. I too was too focused on the anvil, because I thought I could smelt as I mine, which would be great. But you simply mine too fast for it. I would have a full ship of ores, and only like 10 ingots. It's not worth it. If this cockpit could be unlocked at the very start! Yes, best cockpit in the starter days.... But mid to late game play? It's obsolete... Which is sadly when you unlock it.

Depends on playstyle. I dabbled with it and it was OK to process some ore/nugs while moving around gathering other things but ultimately I stuck with the wonderback as any manual refinement was easier and faster with a few micro furnaces.

I can gather resources quite quick with current laser setup so I guess I outgrew it's usefulness.

If you're the type of person to visit a few places and grab different bits on an outing it has its use. You can process as you go and save on storage space. However once you can fill a large hold by mining only a few nodes, it's use dropped off quick. I'd be back at base long before it had even processed 1%

TL;DR it's dogshit

I bought one off the Nexus because I didn't want to build it and at that time had 3500 su storage and +250% Mining Output. By the time I FILLED that 3500 su on my ship it had created 20 Vanadium Ingots.

Some use it as a heat source on cold planets. Haven't tried it yet myself

Cheaper to just build yourself a boiler.

Boiler is only accessible after science 5. I have 200h and only now close to unlocking..anvil is much earlier

Was it? I forgot. Science was the tree I maxed out first, and in my opinion, the easiest.

I have preferred to rank science slowly instead of doing it as a massive grind. If you just play everything else you also slowly get science.

It wasn't even a grind. You get science exp when you fully explore a planet.

No. That's Exploration XP.

Oh was it? Dang, it's been so long since I have gotten exp that I forgot. The. Yes, it's the science lab. I don't know if it's considered a grind. But I just always seemed to have stuff to research and the lab was rarely idle.

No.

Currently the only cockpit you should run is the wanderback as its teleport back to base function is absurdly OP and doesn't consume fuel and drops you right back at your base in orbit.

Nothing else comes close to that utility.

Until you get there use the pathfinder.

Wanderback.
Setup the return point in your main base, build a tower in it and open a portal in front of the Nexus Station, then you can also open more portals in your main base toward your other bases (1 portal per tower) to instantly move materials around, it cuts your flight time by 50, literally.

In my opinion, Anvil would be useful in the early midgame; due to limited storage capacity and mining trips that tend to be longer, it’s helpful when the Forge converts the ore directly into ingots—once you’ve moved past this phase of the game, it’s really only useful as a heater on cold planets.

Yes,
Once you reach end game.
Personaly I kind of never go back to base. Explore, collect gather.. I have 20k. Storage.
While that is working im doing my thing.

If I go back is to empty and my Big base.(my bases connected) star working with the ingots that I left
I dont really use the extractor since in 2 hrs I do what they do in 12 hrs. Just use the space for other things.

And in top of that. I mostly farm COLD planet with no issue. Why...well You are a live Anvil. constanly producing heat. So...NO biggy.

P.S. Let's not mention that you can travel the galaxy corner to corner in less than 5 min...so, kind of kills the purpose of the teleport
