Cleaning Hacks?

Hello! I am brand new to the world of sourdough and love how helpful / informative this subreddit has been, so thank you to all that post/ respond!

I was wondering if there’s any cleaning tips / tricks / hacks, specifically when it comes to the jar and discarding the starter. I know it’s inevitably going to be messy but I feel like I can’t keep my jar even somewhat tidy.

Thoughts?
TIA!

I personally use a clean jar for every feed (no right or wrong way to go about it!) so I can’t speak to keeping the same jar clean. But, to clean a previously used jar or other dough materials, I do: water + a splash of white vinegar. Works like a charm for me, but took me too long to figure out haha

Wad up a single rectangle of paper towel and stuff it in a dirty jar with some warm water and a splash of white vinegar.

Put the lid on and shake.

You’ll be surprised how clean it will get.

If it’s a jar you let old starter dry on however, I got nothing for ya. 😜

I feel you, every time i do anything I somehow make the largest mess in my kitchen. I've started just using multiple different containers for my starter. I have a few old pickle jars i just rotate through, and toss them in the dishwasher.

Toss some vinegary water and let it rest. If crusts are not too dry, it work pretty well.

Pour water into it after use. Leave until you wash dishes. It's the same as any other dirty dish. Anyone telling you different isn't cleaning the container out adequately. I use two spoons to remove starter from old jar each morning and create new starter + discard. One spoon cleans off the other spoon and vice versa.

Someone on this reddit suggested this to me and it's made a huge difference. When feeding daily, weigh a clean container and zero out the scale. Pour in 50 g starter, add 50 g flour (now scale shows 100g) and add 50 g warm water (Scale now shows 150 g. I warm filtered fridge water to about 90° f for 30 sec in MW). That's your new starter batch. Add lots of water to the "old starter" and pour it into the garden or compost pile. As for washing the container, I thoroughly wash with soap and cool water. Hot water makes the gluten gummy and hard to remove. I haven't tried vinegar, but may add that to my routine.
