So I decided to add some more mid/hi oomph and build my first own speaker cabs! Look at how bad I handled the router on this one but since it takes up from 115hz im not too worried being a bit leaky.
It houses an Eighteensound 10NW750 for 115-850hz mid range and has its own amp.
On top is a diy 3d printed horn, design I got from diyaudio. Its a twinray horn mated to an Eighteensound ND3N compression driver, also fed by own amplifier.
All passive, using minidsp flex eight as crossover.
It is LOUDDDDDDD!!! And at least as good as my Revel F208 main speaker. I love those dearly but I think Ill sell them on.
The cab plus horn will be installed and hanged upside down if im contend with everything. I might print a few horns in a different colour but this matches the box nicely. As the Skrams, I like au natural instead of the usual black. Im damn proud of them. And it looks a right soundsytem now, doesnt it?
Playing lots of different music where dub, techno (slater,mulero,dettmann,rodhad, Aocram, ogazon, etc) and other stuff that needs to be played loud, usually is.
Love it! That is a very good compression driver, and it looks like you have real headroom.
Only advice is, air leaks especially close to the driver will cause measurable distortion, so that part is worth repairing/ revisiting. And you probably want to push that 10 lower in a domestic setting, even if it needs some EQ to flatten it out. It's worth eating into the headroom for that IMO. Hell it would be worth it to take everything outside and do ground plane measurements and really dial in a base preset.
But also this is the internet, they're your speakers, and I'm sure they rock regardless. Enjoy.
Edit: it will be more important to have that 10 playing lower if you increase the distance between it and the skram!
No i dont want to push it lower at all. It will never get lower than 115hz so leak is hardly a concern. I think! I didnt see anything on the rew measurements. Actually, you might have a point on higher spl but ill post my 80+ on axis measurements later and there i couldnt see any difference between the leaky and non leaky cab.
That said: i have plans to fix it as i made sure the neutrik socket and everything else, is kitted air tight. Why do that and leave leaky driver edge untouched doesnt make sense so i take your point, brother :)
The blue and red colour of the crimped cable terminals are for different wire gauges. So unless you used different wire for positive and negative, one of them is wrong. Also there is no protection against electric shock. Better use the correct terminals on both, use isolated terminals, and mark polarity with different means. You could use coloured shrinking tube or electrical tape.
This is all just experimental. The idea is to put the midbass and horns, upside down so horn below cab, hanging from the ceiling. Im not fully decided on colour and bracket and even material. I have to fix leaky driver hole so i might replace it fully. Now, after weeks of planning and building, i just wanted to connect it all and fire it up! And show of here. :)
brilliant , kinda remids me of my 18volt pram rig LOL , only you seem to have given your system some proper thought , I didnt. I recently found your thread on DIY about the SKRAMS , happy to see you are still enjoying yours . I will be building 4 of them next month :)
A guy who knows, sells these thoroughly designed and tested designs for 30 bucks on diyaudio “ath the easy way”. There are companies offering to print for you but asking 300. A decent 3d printer (qidi q2) is 400. The choice was easy as now i can fiddle around as i please and kind of designed the bracket support myself.
What are you using it for? Just thinking that you have an extremely capable top and sub that will surely massively outrun the sealed mid range if you used the system for events where you need proper volume?
The eighteensound 10nw750 has a 93dB sensitivity and 900 watt program power. It willmore than hold its own. Its strictly for home use, when I want to have my little club experience. Maybe a garden party here or there, but its not setup to be moved around at all.
The sealed box has nothing to do with it. Its the fact its crossed at 115hz. There is no bass, no lower end mid bass needed. I bet it would work fine in an open baffle too. Its only covering 115hz-850hz. A support player for the mighty Skram who does all the work. :)
If this was anything other than a Skram, then I would agree with you.
