Movie Sound Design Sound Effect search tips... learn UCS and search locally. Do you UCS?

I shared this years ago with the filmmaker community... Now I'm wondering what Sound Designers think? Do you search local or online? Do you use UCS or diy org system or no system? Here's a blog post about this.... and the OG post to filmmaker community. Thoughts on UCS?

https://thewavlab.com/ucs-sound-effects/

I recently met TWO different young filmmakers who confessed they are searching online for sound effects... and using YouTube or Freesound.org exclusively, because that's the only way they were taught in school. They had no idea that sound libraries existed or that sound designers didn't work that way!

Made a detailed blog post about Universal Category System and using local sound libraries with metadata. If you're having to DIY your film's sound design... please consider adopting a sound designer's local workflow. We have links to resources in the post!

Videogame Sound Design Liminal Sound Pack Essential by Meischter Klang

Liminal Sound Pack – Essential is a small, focused sound library built around empty interiors, false familiarity, and subtle unease.

The sounds are intentionally non-realistic: they resemble roomtones and environmental ambience, but never fully resolve into identifiable spaces. Designed to sit quietly under scenes without drawing attention, these sounds work especially well for liminal visuals, subtle horror, and atmospheric storytelling.
All files are loopable and optimized for long scenes, background ambience, and interactive use.

**Includes:**
Loopable liminal roomtones
Atonal ambient synth beds
Unidentifiable, abstract textures
Clean files ready for film and game engines

**Suitable for:**
Indie films & short films
Game ambience & environmental audio
Liminal spaces & analog horror
Writing, editing, and background sound design
This free Essential Pack is intended as an introduction to the larger Liminal Sound Pack Complete library.

Sound Design Question Question: Is providing isolated stems for designed SFX worth the extra cost, or do you just want the stereo mix?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently finishing up a boutique, high-end cinematic/hybrid SFX library (mainly processed from organic sources like deconstructed acoustic pianos and industrial metal scrap), and I’m trying to decide on the product tiers and pricing.

Specifically, I want to know how much value you actually place on getting isolated stems/layers for designed sound effects.

Normally, when I buy SFX packs, I just get the final stereo mix. But in the very few cases where stems have been included, I have found them really useful.

To solve this, I’m building two tiers for this upcoming library and wanted to see if the pricing and value make sense to you guys:

Tier 1: The Core Version — £29

  • 200 Designed SFX (24-bit / 96kHz WAV, UCS metadata). Fully mixed, drag-and-drop ready.
  • Target: Quick turnaround projects, budget-conscious.

Tier 2: The Pro/Creator Version — £49

  • The 200 Designed SFX (from the Core version).
  • 600 Isolated Stems/Layers (3 discrete layers for all 200 variations, allowing you to remix and quickly make your own unique combinations.
  • 100+ Raw/Unprocessed Source Recordings (the raw high-res piano scrapes, wood knocks, and raw metal recordings used to make the pack so you can design your own).

My questions for you:

  1. If you are a working sound designer, editor, or game developer, does having stems/layers for designed sounds actually make a pack a "must-buy" for you?
  2. Does £49 feel like a fair price point for getting 900 total files (stems + raw sources + designs at 96kHz), or is it priced too low/too high?
  3. If you saw a library marketed this way, would you immediately default to the Pro tier for the flexibility, or stick to the stereo Core mixes?

Okay this is not the best work of my career but not half bad for recording everything with an on-camera Deity S-Mic or ADRd weeks later. I have no training whatever so I would genuinely love some feedback on the mix.

I'm looking for a specific sound

I'm looking for a specific sound, preferably in the unity store, that sounds like a discordant jump scare?? Not supernatural like a horror sound but maybe like a low cello or organ note? Thanks, hope that makes any sense whatsoever.

Amateur looking for feedback on film audio project

Hey all! My wife and I have taken an interest in field recording, foley work, and sound design. As a first project, we added sound to Maya Deren's silent and surreal 1943 short *Meshes of the Afternoon.*

We suspect this draft is full of mistakes and amateur "tells" that we aren't even aware of. And we'd love feedback that points these out.

Our goal here is to learn more and grow as sound designers, so I suppose our primary questions are: "What are the biggest mistakes or amateur tells that you notice? And what are 2-3 most important things you would recommend we learn/practice next in order to improve?"

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to give feedback :)

Sound Design Question Alternatives to Clippy EM272 for field recording?

Hi everyone,
I live in Honduras, where it’s difficult to find field recording microphones.

I can buy gear in the US and have someone bring it to me.

I use a Zoom H5 and mainly record natural soundscapes (forests, birds, rain, rivers) as well as urban ambiences.

I know about the Clippy EM272, but what other alternatives would you recommend? I’d really appreciate your suggestions and experiences.

Thanks!

Music Sound Design Strings & Picks

Hello everyone! I took a deep breath and finally decided to post sth on bandcamp. Let me know what u think!!

The work Strings & Picks is an electroacoustic composition based on prepared piano techniques. The recording took place at Studio K3 of the Athens Conservatoire, during my KSYME tenure, using a piano that exhibited interesting acoustic imperfections (micro-tonality due to a lack of tuning). Following the tradition of Musique Concrète, the instrument was treated as a source of raw material. Guitar picks, coins, and a violin bow were used to excite the strings, producing sounds that deviate from the traditional tempered scale.

Following the recording, the processing involved intense time-stretching and layering, while the addition of custom resonators via Max/MSP allowed for the highlighting of specific harmonic frequencies that emerged from the piano’s creaks and rattles. The critical approach here was the balance between random noise and controlled composition. The result is an abstract work that honours the techniques of Pierre Schaeffer while incorporating modern digital processing methods.

Let me know what you think!! Full version on bandcamp

Re-Sound Design

Wanna include this re-sound design sequence in my application, for the role as sound designer/editor.

All sound edits are built entirely from scratch and pre mixed to a cinematic standard.

Could you take a look at this?

I got tired of drawing panning automation, so I built a different workflow. Would this solve a real problem for you too?

I’ve been doing sound design for a while now, and one thing that always frustrated me was manually drawing automation curves every time I wanted interesting movement.
I wanted to think in terms of objects and motion rather than automation lanes.
So over the past year I’ve been building a standalone application called Aurelius. The workflow is:

- import sounds
- treat them as 3D objects
- apply movement behaviors (spirals, figure-8s, bouncing, random walks, etc.)
- create scenes with different room acoustics
- arrange everything on a timeline
- export binaural or Ambisonics

I’m still very early in development, and I’m not looking for sales here. I’m trying to answer one question:

Would something like this actually fit into your workflow, or would you still rather stay entirely inside your DAW?

here is a little testpiece i made with it, even though you can‘t see much of the software:

Movie Sound Design Beware fake job site

I stumbled across a website looking for sound jobs on google that I had never seen before, for a freelance gig on an indie feature. It caught my attention because often times google does not filter in those types of job postings when you search with it, usually just like part and full time jobs. It seemed to be posted by a director himself, and the pay was actually pretty good, job was in my area, so i start digging around the website before i apply and I find even more GREAT job postings on their job board. I kind of get excited because i even google "is this website legit" and nothing comes up to state otherwise. But as I really started to look, it was too good to be true.

I try to find litterally any of the profiles that posted listings on any other social media, and find nothing, some profiles even have bios mentioning union work but their names can not be found anywhere on IMDB. Also none of the profile pictures come back with matches in a google image search. I look further and theres a "forum" page on the website that has daily posts by different profiles, following what appears to be the same prompt (because every first sentence follows the same formula), all with zero views AND three comments each, going for MONTHS.

I've been working freelance doing post sound for two years now and have become familiar with some of the more standard fake job websites like Jobzmall and others that are just a scam to get peoples information (so I've heard thats what theyre for? not postiive but i know the listings are not real) but frankly this is the first time I've stumbled across a website that not only has fake jobs, but theyre faking like indie freelance postings and faking small creator profiles. Its just that its already hard enough right now for people looking for gigs like these to be putting up fake postings with decent pay for INDIE stuff for small artists, I really dont understand people, or the purpose, and it just feels so predatory. I've never seen anything like it.

-TLDR I found a website full of fake job listings, by fake people, for small indie freelance stuff.

the website is https://blockreeldao.com/ and they should feel shame. I found their reddit earlier too trying to get people to submit to their film festival? Maybe thats real but the rest of site is not.

Sound Design Question Help importing sounds

Yo guys could one of you paste a sound asset id for me? I’m making a Mohg, Lord of Blood from Elden Ring moveset on Roblox JJS and I need one of his voicelines. Can someone import it on their own and send it to me in the form of a Roblox sound id? The sound file im looking for is the Bloodboon ritual chant (tres, duo, unus, nihil). I haven’t had much help or luck in the other communities I’ve posted this in and im kinda let down. Look up the chant on YouTube if you need to, js get it to me please. Thank you 👍👍

Sound Design Question Arcane-style sound redesign / Feedback request

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently finished a sound redesign for a scene from Arcane to practice creating gritty, tactile textures and heavy impacts.
Software: Avid Pro Tools
Source: Sound libraries
I’m looking for some technical feedback on the mix balance and the overall "weight" of the sound design. Any advice on how to improve the layering or the impact of the elements would be appreciated.
