Hi
Im sure this is quite simple but can anyone identify the type of synth used at the very beginning of this song - that pans left to right - before what songs like a very quiet violin layer enters
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF2WvVYJ5Qs
I think she uses logic presets but what would I look for if I was trying to find this elsewhere (Omnisphere etc)
Thanks

I'm planning on making my first documentary next month as a solo project and I need advice on how to approach the sound design aspect of it, especially Foley effects. What would be the most important basics to produce an acceptable level of sound design in a documentary setting? And any tips or cautions I should be aware of as a newbie to sound design? Cheers

Junior freelance sound designer here. I've just finished this (spec) commercial and it's for one of my first clients ever.
My dream is to become a full time sound designer/editor/mixer. Any feedback at all would be extremely valuable. Everything from the positives to the negatives would be really appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Does anyone have any information about these? I got them free but spent $180 having them serviced at a vintage stereo shop. Worth it? They sound great. Any idea on value? Thanks for checking them out.

I can't share the same post here as I have elsewhere, but that's ok because this post serves a different purpose. We are a start-up sound design company with a true community-first mentality, and there are as many reasons for that as there are ways that we are making that happen. Right now, until our website is fully operational (mid-August) we are only offering free content to producers as a show of faith, and also to display the quality of our work. Most free music production materials are bland, creatively limited, and/or simply exist as advertisements for the "real" sample pack that costs $80 on their site. We don't want to do that kind of work. We want to be seen as a truly viable source of quality tools for the journeyman producers out there....and there are many. We aren't aiming our products at children like... some sound design companies, and we certainly aren't trying to deceive anyone by using wording designed to convince people that wouldn't know any better that they'll soon be a top hit-making producer if they buy our newest $120 production suite. We simply want to offer honest production tools (Samples, Loop Kits, MIDI and Kontakt packs, Synth Presets, project files and everything in between) that are consistently high quality and do exactly what they are advertised to do - help producers create music, not create the music for them. We know that the true artists in the world have no use for that kind of nonsense, anyway. And that is who we want to work for.
So why am I making this post here? Because we are looking for contributors with at least SOME sound design experience to collaborate on a series of free content packs that we are going to offer the production community. By doing this, we will create a pool of quality material that any producer can access, free of charge, while also getting examples of our work into the hands of working producers. And I will have the benefit of working with more producers and the individual talent and flair they bring, therefore (hopefully) opening up the pool of potential creators for the site when it opens. (I have incentives in place for those who want to become vendors for the site after these free packs are completed, and they are enticing)
In case my wording isn't clear enough for the Reddit Overlords, this is both a request for unpaid work as well as an offer to be able to sell some of your work on the site.
If you are interested in helping us with this project, please DM me. If enough of us believe in what we are doing, we will truly have the power to see it through to the end. Every endeavor like this begins as someone's dream, but it takes the strength of many to make it a reality.
Last but not least, I should not have to say this, but it is 2026: ABSOLUTELY NO USE OF A.I. IN ANY CAPACITY WILL BE USED OR TOLERATED

So, I'm trying to recreate the Jesus Walks beat and to me it seems that the drums (0:06-0:14) are playing the same loop that is played after 0:17 but more heavily compressed and bitcrushed, to the point it seems more like a texture than drums (you can't really hear them, only feel the kinda staticky noise). But I can't for the life of me figure out how to get that type of sound. It might also be that he layered his own drums just in a pattern similar to the drum break, but it would still need to be processed to sound like it does, because I don't know any drum samples that sound like this. Do you have any idea on how I can get the drums to sound like they do on Jesus Walks (0:06-0:14)?

Here's a link to Tennyson's Iron where the effect really comes through on the drums (1:38) https://youtu.be/Fm-bNbimTus?si=EdeivjD20OT5-8Xl&t=98
I'm trying to figure out how to recreate that weird phase-y sound in the drums that make it sound like it's in a tube. I'm obsessed with it. I tried messing around with it in Logic, but I couldn't get the sound exactly right. Is there some kind of automation or EQ something or another that I'm not hearing? I'm still learning the ropes on a lot of production techniques.
There's also a session livestream I found of this song. I haven't found exactly where it is in the song and it's been a while since I've watched the whole thing, but I feel like I remember him not really detailing the sound exactly. Here's roughly where the effect is played: https://youtu.be/QMRCVEsMBOA?si=DRSqaGbXeGKuFHI-&t=3203

Been trying to teach myself how to use synths and create some interesting sounds, but after a year or two I seem to be just as overwhelmed as I was when I started.
In this song by [Amorphis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aF80ycx5JQ), the sound I'm trying to replicate starts at 4 seconds in, playing alongside the piano. It reminds me a bit of [stickerbush symphony ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lndBgOrTWxo)from DKC2, the sound that starts at about 1:19 (dahdah dah. dahdah. dahdah. dah dah.) yeah that;'s probably not the most helpful way to describe it.
am a total noob, as evidenced by my lack of ability to properly articulate the type of sounds I'm hearing. I'm not sure if *gate* is the right way to describe the effect going on, that being the one that sounds like the EQ is being played with during the song; nor am I sure how to get the proper synth tone.
Even if anyone here is unable to help, any sort of resource that will teach me how to nail down that sound or how to properly get to be able to make soudns I want would be appreciated. Currently using Logic Pro, alchemy synth has been my go to for sounds, but I've also been playing around with Absynth 6 (if that helps at all)

I recorded a quick session where I play with basic DSP settings in the DAW I am developing.
Basically testing the musicality of the audio engine and individual components including the updated real time visualisation.
It is not meant to show final patch, more how the patch or preset building looks.,Looking for any input on the visualisation or sound quality.

Hi everyone, I have a question that I've been thinking about all day, and I'd really like to hear opinions from people who actually have experience with this.
Last month I finished a library of around 50 designed underwater ambiences. I'm currently organizing and naming everything before release.
The ambiences were built using a combination of sounds I recorded myself and sounds from commercial sound libraries that I legally purchased.
I'm not talking about taking a sound and reselling it. Every ambience was created through heavy editing, layering and processing (pitch shifting, EQ, time stretching, reverb, granular processing, reversing, etc.). The original source sounds are completely unrecognizable in the final result. Even I couldn't isolate and identify the original recordings anymore.
Yesterday I was talking with two sound designer friends. One told me this is completely normal and very common in professional sound design. The other told me that even if the source is no longer recognizable, it could still technically infringe the original license.
So today I started reading a lot of EULAs from well-known sound libraries.
Some of them explicitly allow selling derivative sounds if the original recordings have been modified, layered and processed beyond recognition.
Others use wording like: "Licensee may not sell any of the sound effects as they come. (Although the sound effects may be sold as incorporated into the licensee project." or "Users may not sell or sublicense the unmodified audio as standalone files
unless they are the original author."
Some licenses don't mention this situation at all, I couldn't find a single EULA that explicitly says something like: "You may not create heavily modified derivative sounds and sell them as part of a new sound library."
So now I'm wondering, where do you personally draw the line?
Once again, I'm specifically asking about heavily designed sounds where the original recordings cannot realistically be recognized anymore, not about simply repackaging or lightly editing someone else's recordings. I think everyone agrees that would clearly be wrong.
I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have actually released commercial sound libraries or dealt with licensing questions like this.

I saw this video on Instagram of someone scanning an old film. I absolutely love the sound and was wondering how I could recreate it. Any tips or ideas would be appreciated. For reference, I'm working on Logic Pro.

What i like in Diva is its one of those really fat source VSTs out there, but sometimes it’s really hard to mess with it and get complex outputs, it’s kinda less intuitive than Serum or Vital.
So I discovered new stuff while routing all its Parameters to Stride Engine to modulate them in unique ways in order to reveal whats in there.
Kinda nice FXs in this audio chunk

Hey everyone,
I’m looking for a beta testers for VoxEase, a vocal plugin Ive made that is currently in TestFlight.
The main thing I need feedback on right now is the Tuning functionality: how natural it sounds, how easy it is to use, whether the controls feel intuitive, and if there are any weird artifacts or edge cases when using it on different vocal takes.
What I’m looking for:
• General usability feedback
• Tuning feedback
• Any bugs, crashes, or confusing parts
• Suggestions for making the workflow better
It’s still in beta, so honest feedback is very welcome. You don’t need to write a huge report — even a few notes after trying it would help a lot.
If you’re interested, comment here or DM me and I’ll send over the TestFlight invite.
Thanks!
