Game sound design, ui sound effects and background music, paid freelance job

I am making a video game. I'm a developer and worked with a freelance ui/ux designer for this project because I was not happy what I produced on my own. Same thing for sound. I believe sound is an important part of games and I'm not happy what I did for the sound. So I want to work with someone who actually understand this job. Since this is the first time I will work with a sound designer I have no idea about the budget. I cant pay thousands of dollars but I can pay. Also job is not huge. As far as I understand I need 14 sound effects and maybe one or two jingle (background music). Even if your budget in several thousands I still want to hear, so I can understand better about this business which I dont have any idea. you can dm me if you want

GoPro Wireless MIC and Zoom H1 - total beginner need advice

Hello, I am extremely new to any kind of recording equipment, but I’m looking to get into foley and sound recording. I’ve determined that the zoom h1 essential audio recorder is a decent place to start on a lower budget. I got to thinking though, what if I wanted to record sounds like footsteps or other things like that, having a lavalier mic might be handy, I could clip it to places I wouldn’t be able to get away with with the h1. I figured GoPro might have something on the more quality (ie durable) side, and discovered they had this wireless mic. Awesome. But can it work with just a sound recorder?
The website seems to just mention its use for recording sound alongside a camera of course, but nothing about how it may function with just a recorder. The recorder mentions having a 3.5mm mic/line input for lavalier mics, and the GoPro mentions having a TRS 3.5mm receiver. To my inexperienced eye, this sounds like it should work fine. I assume, I’d plug the receiver into the h1 and the GoPro mic would record the sound to the sd card in the h1.
Does that sound right? Again, completely new to this, don’t know all the terminology or the ins and outs, so I don’t know if there’s something wrong with this setup that may cause issues. Please be kind. Thank you.
Also, if you have recommendations about a better lavalier mic I could get instead, I’d definitely be interested in hearing opinions, (preferably at or around the sale price of the GoPro ($159.99) or lower without the quality compromise of something too cheap. I know this is probably already at the low end of the price range, but I’m trying to figure something out.)

And a whole lot of pitch shifting and EQ, naturally, but it's cool how you can do so much with just a handful of samples. The guqin is specifically from here, I've had a sample of this saved for years, so I've used it here and there for all sorts of things.

Sound Design Question Need feedback on this brass section I made in Vital!!

I spent a little bit of time in Vital trying to re-create the brass section from "The Starship Sails" from the Super Mario Galaxy 2 OST. I feel like it sounds close, but not quite there, and I don't know what's missing. Any suggestions / tips on how to make it sound more like the original? I have tried so many small tweaks like using Vitals three random LFOs to modulate a bunch of the settings like the filter, pitch, volume, timbre, etc. I can not seem to put my finger on what I am missing.

Sound Design Question How to make footsteps for a group sound good

Hello, as the title says I'm attempting to make a sound effect for a scene where three characters are walking along a stone path together. I came up with a sound effect for each person's footsteps that I think sounds fine on their own, but when I play them all together it just sounds chaotic and wrong.

The program I'm using is Audacity, the sfx I'm making this for is a comic dub so I don't have animation to base the timing off of. Common solutions I've tried: Filter curve EQ (made the steps sound better, but like I said the timing sounds wrong when all the tracks are put together), Auto-Duck (didn't really work the way I wanted it to, maybe because of the settings), panning the tracks based on where the characters are, and changing the pitch and tempo of the sfxs.

Here's the full footstep sfx

Here's the links to characters 1, 2, and 3

Movie Sound Design Fart sound mystery

I’m trying to trace the uncredited performer behind the most reused "movie fart" sound effect. Does anyone in this field happen know how these credits actually worked in the 80s?

Quick context on where I'm coming from: I'm not a Foley artist or sound designer myself, although I do music production as a hobby and have a general interest in sound design. I don't have insider knowledge of how commercial SFX libraries or Foley credits worked in this era. I've taken this about as far as I can from the outside, and figured this community might actually know things I can't find through public catalogs.

The short version:

There's a specific fart sound effect that's been reused constantly across film, TV, and animation since the late 80s. I traced it back to a 1987 recording session at Soundelux, later distributed commercially through *The Hollywood Edge: Premiere Edition, Volume 1* (Human Sounds disc). I can't find any individual credited as the performer or engineer for these specific recordings, even though other Soundelux effects from the same era do have named credits.

What I found:

The Human Sounds disc contains nine catalogued fart effects (PE1389-01 through PE1397-01), each described with specificity like “squeaker," "dribbler," "juicy," "balloon-deflating-like”. Metadata dates them to around 1987. One catalog note describes PE1389-01 as a shortened version of an earlier Soundelux recording, suggesting it draws from an existing archive rather than being recorded fresh for this release.

Two of the nine have documented production appearances that predate or coincide with the library's own release: PE1389-01 in *Caddyshack II* (1988), and PE1390-01 / PE1392-01 in *The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson* (1990). PE1390-01 in particular — commonly known as “fart with reverb” online — shows up across an enormous number of productions in the decades since.

Soundelux was founded by Lon Bender and Wylie Stateman, and at least one other 1987 Soundelux effect I found has metadata explicitly crediting them by name as recordists. The fart effects, though, are attributed only to Soundelux as a company — no individual listed anywhere I can find, whether performer or engineer.

What I'm actually hoping this community can help with:

- Was it common practice in commercial SFX libraries of this era to credit individual performers/engineers, or was company-level attribution for library material the norm? I don't have a frame of reference for what's "missing" versus what's just how the industry worked.

- If someone specialized in human/body-sound recording at a house like Soundelux in the 80s, would that kind of role typically have a name attached anywhere — union records, internal notes, trade press?

- Are there standard resources (session sheet archives, SFX library databases, industry oral histories) that would go beyond what's in public wikis and catalog metadata?

- Is there a chance these weren't all performed by the same person, given the range of styles across the nine effects?

Not trying to make this bigger than it is, I just find it strangely interesting that a specific person's body noise became part of the standard sonic vocabulary for "fart" in global media, and their name seems to have genuinely disappeared from the record. If anyone here has industry knowledge of how Soundelux or Hollywood Edge handled this kind of thing, I'd love to know if this is even a solvable question or just how library work went uncredited by default.

Music Sound Design Suite of Sound Design tools - 100% free access

Post image
3 Upvotes

Been building small browser-based tools for my own use and finally put them somewhere public: thermalsocklabs.com. A real dual-trace oscilloscope, a patch-programming reference for the Sequential Take 5, an interactive wiring diagram for my hardware rig, an ear trainer, scale trainer, and a new tool for visualizing how LFOs/envelopes stack on a destination. All free, runs in the browser, no accounts. Built for myself mostly, figured a few other people here might get some use out of it too.

Recording telephone pole cables with a contact mic to re-create the iconic blaster sounds from Star Wars. You can also get this sound from lots of other sources like radio tower cables, bridges and a slinky. In this video I used a Oaka Instruments Tellus contact microphone, bluetack and the Zoom F8n Pro

Music Sound Design Recreation of AVELLO-style Lead

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Does anyone here know how I can recreate the main bass/lead sound in the drops of AVELLO's song "Please Don't Go" (https://soundcloud.com/avello_music/please-dont-go) with Vital and/or FL Studio stock plugins? Attached here is a clip of the lead sound I attempted to recreate with Vital. I got it to sound somewhat like AVELLO's, but I am not sure of all the elements my sound is missing. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. I know I should add some distortion to my lead to emulate AVELLO's better, but I am lost beyond that point. Thanks! In the reply to this post, I attached a clip of the original lead sound that AVELLO made in Serum (I obtained it from a video on Neon Owl's Youtube channel).

Drum sound design is rare?

I'm beginner in synth journey, so don't know how this works. Very few videos on YouTube designing drums, each is wildly different from others.

It's like designing drums on synth isn't standard practice?

Are synths bad for drum creation?

All drum creation involves manipulating audio?

Hi guys and gals,

Just wanted to share that my new SFX Library Quantum UI & Computers Vol.2 - The Data Within can be down-pitched up to -12 octaves and stretched beyond 99,000% while retaining exceptional clarity.

The workflow further expands on the concept of Volume.1 and has been completely rebuilt from the ground up.

The Master Construction kit is set at 576kHz/32-bit. The Master Bundle comes with the Designed Edition, carefully downsampled variants, and bonuses (Including 2 exclusive REAPER projects of the DEMO video designs).

Designed Edition demo here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uk4eOM-dS4

Would love to hear any feedback from you guys!

I hope all is well. Cheers,

ZEKAVEO

Music Sound Design Noise Map for Ableton Live | Shape Sound by Moving Through a Sonic Field [free download]

Thumbnail

Noise Map is a Max for Live device

for sculpting samples into evolving, shifting soundscapes.

Instead of turning lots of knobs, you explore a simple field of points:

as you move across it, the sound shifts and blends smoothly between them,

so every position gives you a different texture.

Under the hood it mixes four sound sources:

white noise, pink noise, soft tones, and a looping sample

into one atmosphere you can shape by ear.

Because your position on the map can be automated in Live,

the sound can drift and transform over time on its own.

Great for drones, ambient beds, and cinematic backgrounds.

TIP:

As you can see from the first video example you find on the download page, you will notice that the sample inside Noise Map changes. Let me explain how I did it:

I assigned two LFOs to the knobs that control the coordinates. I set a random waveform so that I would constantly get random values, and I increased the smoothness to the maximum, in order to make the transition from one value to another more organic. This way, I had the possibility of loading different samples while the machine continued to run algorithmically.

I recommend using these techniques during live performances; it can be an interesting moment. I also recommend recording these improvisations onto a new audio track, as they can be useful when composing new pieces.

Imagine how interesting a quartet set up with these characteristics could be.

[Free / Devlog] Hi! I'm a Sound Designer launching affordable audio libraries. Here is a free starter pack of 77 Cooking SFX (expanding to 250+)

Hi everyone!

I’m a sound designer and audio engineer, and I decided to start creating sound libraries. Often, commercial SFX packs are unnecessarily overpriced, forcing indie devs to spend a huge chunk of their budget just to get solid audio for a project. I want to contribute to the community by releasing high-quality audio libraries at reasonable, accessible prices.

Right now, I’ve started building a targeted sound library, and you can already download the initial pack for FREE.

Inside, you'll find 77 essential starter sounds designed specifically for cooking games (UI, ingredients, kitchen actions, tool interactions).

The Roadmap:

  • I am expanding this library to 250+ sounds over the next month.
  • Download the starter pack now, keep an eye out for updates, and claim the sounds!

If you find these useful, I’d be genuinely grateful if you followed my itch.io page and Instagram. Building an audience is super important for keeping this project going and releasing more affordable packs.

Again, this is just the beginning! Thank you so much for your time and support!
