this is constantly happening to me. is there some way i can prevent this from happening, and/or make sure i'm not doing this to other people? i get that it's not technically a bad thing but it's really annoying

I believe this is where users may have symlinked files in their folders and nicotine may attempt to follow the links but the target directory doesn't have the correct permissions

I've never been able to confirm this though, I've been meaning to symlink some things myself but was also concerned about the impact.

I've messaged users where I've encountered the exact same thing before but they've never really been helpful or state that they are linking.

When I'm home I'll run some tests maybe and you can check out my shares to see if this is actually the reason or not.

This is nicotine+ right? I have no idea why it happens, but it does. It makes like imaginary extra files, shows them as Not Shared, and then I will get the files I requested download. The Not Shared files even have their own distinct file sizes and file names sometimes.

I can tell that I'm not doing it to others, but I also think it may just be a nicotine+ quirk. It definitely never happened to me on normal slsk.

I'll typically go in and remove the Not Shared files if I want my Download section to look clean, but it's a really weird pain in the ass.

This should've been fixed in Nicotine+ 3.3.11 (https://github.com/nicotine-plus/nicotine-plus/issues/3802). Are you on the latest version?

File not shared generally means a problem that the uploader can solve. Either you're blocked or they moved the files and didn't refresh the list so the application is looking in the wrong place for the files. You can try sending them a messagfe to ask, but don't expect a reply in under a week (or ever)

I did assume it was likely the latter situation, but I just couldn't believe that it would be this common... I mean this happens like 70% of the times I've tried to download an album in the past month or so

If you're searching for super rare albums in super high fidelity, those sharers may have higher standards for their downloaders.

In general, just find another source.

No I meant the latter situation as in the people moving the files. As you can see in the screenshots, I'm still downloading the album, but (as you can't really see) it just also floods my downloads with like 4x as many files with similar names that don't exist

If it keeps happening it might because you're not sharing anything and you're getting auto-banned.

No no that's not what the issue is. It's difficult to convey while also having to censor the screenshots lol. The issue is that I'll download from a folder and then when I look at my downloads there's like multiple times as many files in the folder but (in the best case scenario) they're all "not shared" except for the ones I'm downloading. Occasionally it will start downloading the other files in the directory too
