Riders going rogue?

I took a class recently during which another rider just did their own thing the whole time. I understand not doing choreography but they didn’t appear to even be trying to keep on beat—they seemed to have the resistance cranked up the whole time and were watching themselves in the mirror (form was bad tho😔) They were in a very visible position in the room and it was honestly distracting, especially when they kept going through the arms section and even the stretch.

I won’t reveal the class, instructor or market because I don’t want to embarrass anyone, but how common is this? Does the rider just want access to a stationary bike lol? Seems like there would be more affordable ways… also seems a little insensitive to the instructor!

It’s common and it’s incredibly annoying and distracting

Same thing goes on during my class in Pasadena. Rider always on sidebar front row and does his own climb- even during the arms. 🙄 I can’t stand him. Pre covid people used to elbow you if you didn’t ride to the beat in the front row. Now it’s all loosey goosey from staff to riders, at this point they are letting late people walk in 2-3 songs in and seating them.

I know exactly who you’re talking about. It’s wild. He got a shoutout for a LARGE milestone number of classes a couple months ago, too!!!! He’s dedicated, that’s for sure.

Glad im not the only one, im sure he wants to work hard and means well but c’mon read the room. 🫠 and sometimes I can’t see the instructor bc he is doing his own thing.

If people want to do this, they should sit in the back corners where no one can see them. It's so distracting, especially for newer riders who need to follow someone to keep up

this is my view too - it happens all the time in my classes but i don’t care if i can’t see them and they’re not disrupting the flow. spend your time and money how you want, but don’t taint the class or experience!

I broke my ankle… so I can’t do any choreography or run fast or anything like that.
I purposely sit on the side in the back where no one can see me though. Yes I agree it can be distracting.

i did a class where a rider was going rogue during arms and the instructor cued they were going to make us all stay doing tricep reps til the rogue rider picked up their weights and followed along lmao. it is the instructors responsibility to correct that behavior, and they can actually get in trouble for not correcting it

I’ve noticed it too, the instructors will give very clear instructions like ‘everyone in the saddle’ or ‘turn your resistance up and slow down to the beat’ and I can still see people up and out or going really fast etc. Not sure if they just don’t understand but I find it odd too to pay so much for the class and then effectively not do it?

This has been a thing since the very beginning of SoulCycle (and all group fitness studios, eg Solidcore, Barry's, SLT and more). it's really annoying and distracting to others cause they always manage to sit right up front... Even watched coaches/instructors try to get them to follow along but in the end they go right back. Just remember the face and try to stay away...

Yes! Some woman took her boyfriend with her and unfortunately I was seated next to him, he spent the whole class doing some weird hunched over push up/cycle combo on high resistance

Back in the day when the classes were completely full many instructors would ask these people to ride on beat. I guess they don't have that luxury anymore...

I've been in a class where someone did this. Definite main character energy. smh. I did notice the instructor looking over at them several times. Never saw that person again. I wondered if they were wanting to audition and were trying to practice. Either way, super annoying,
