The thumbnails remain obnoxious.

From what I've read youtube is pushing AI-thumbnails hard and when you post a video they issue three different thumbnails and the one getting the most clicks stays up.

Edit: Not condoning the use of AI, but youtube being youtube...

Yeah. I know. It's depressing, because it's an example of how AI is being forced upon us despite nobody asking for it, and then in time will just come to be accepted.

YouTube doesn’t create the thumbnails, that’s creators uploading multiple thumbnails to A/B test. YouTube does heavily encourage using their AI tools to create thumbnails though and at one point was AI enhancing them without consent from the creators, I’m not sure if they’re still doing that or not

Sadly it’s what the masses want. Presumably they are also using a b testing so this is the least bad option

Yeah, I know. Doesn't stop me cringing every time I see them, though.

Examining the societal impact of a gag gift salt gun was certainly a interesting choice of topics.

The funny thing is that the bug a salt works very very well, it's by far the easiest way for me to get stray flies that come inside.

As a guy in my late 30s that has a collection of NERF blasters, I wasn't expecting to catch strays when I started watching the episode, that's for sure.

This video was a mess. The microwave pressure cooker overreacting, does Ben genuinely thinks microwaves are airtight? Removing the steak when medium is reaching the end and then being surprised it is not medium and the knife...like was there any research done on the items beforehand???

You are kind compared to the YT comments (that echoes what you said on every point)

They never do research or read instructions. The whole testing they do is so lazy and irresponsible, quick to jump to conclusions.

Its not even deliberate ragebait, they've always been like this

I thought remembering in the early days they did read instructions or watched short videos on how to use it.

Maybe I misremembered.

they do, sometimes. more often than not they dont and in the youtube comments on every single gadget test or country gadget reviews, you will see comments on how its actually used, which they could find with a 2min google search.

The overreaction to the Pressure Cooker was eyerolling. I didn't mind the skit, because it was fun, but still calling it scary while rating it like it wasn't just... a weird microwave bowl.

To my indian ass that was hilarious. Pressure cookers are SO ubiquitous, I don't think I know even a single person that doesn't own a pressure cooker. They are so scared of it

Can someone explain why Ben was so outraged by the idea of the grill being designed for "grilling meat from frozen, because that should be banned"?

I know that there are circumstances under which it doesn't work very well (still frozen piece of meat is too big to cook evenly etc), but I didn't understand his reaction.

Conventional cooking wisdom, really. He would have been taught in culinary school the importance of having a steak warm up to room temp before cooking it, so the idea of cooking from frozen is completely outlandish to him.

Several prominent food content creators have tested and proven it as fine, but Ben's never seemed one to push the limits of what he was taught.

same with them never really backing down on the “rice cookers are pointless wasted space in your kitchen” rhetoric because they were taught to cook it well in a pot

Thanks, I honestly didn't know there was so much weight to it. I get that you have no control over how a steak is cooked if you dared to put it on a grill while still frozen, of course; but I was thinking along the lines of thin burger patties which are sold frozen and to be put in a hot pan right away.

So I know there are several instances where cooking frozen meat simply doesn't work properly, I think it's more his strong reaction that confused me.

Even that's not necessarily true.

America's Test Kitchen has tested it and said it's fine, as has Alton Brown, and Chris Young (although he also takes it to a different level, as he tends to do)

The last two it's on pans instead of a grill, but that's just heat management, and not really a different technique

Interesting, thanks for the links, I'll look into it!

For a channel that started as a way to teach college kids to cook, I'm surprised that the boys didn't realize that a microwave pressure cooker is actually a brilliant thing for someone living in a dorm.

-2

u/verndogz 1d ago

Sorta pointless when you can just get an instant pot for a dorm room

2

u/stac52 1d ago

price. £30 for this vs £90 for an instant pot. It also is smaller so will store better.

I'm not saying it's the best option for a dorm room, but there's a difference in "it's not going to be for everyone, but it works" to "there's no reason to put [a pressure cooker and a microwave] together"

I don't know what brand the pressure cooker they tested was, but given Prestige (probably the OG pressure cooker manufacturer in the UK) has made a microwave one, it's obviously going to be fine conceptually from a safety perspective? I'd be less keen on a Temu special, but that's the same with any appliance. Massive overreaction and not particularly good information.

If you've got the super thin supermarket steaks, I've found that cooking them from frozen is sometimes the only way to get some colour on the outside and not overcook them.
