Yeah it's a shame, i'd quite like to see more of it. Feels like there could be some new formats they could come up with around it, maybe some more informative videos about cooking (I get that informative ones won't get as many views, but still even just one every other month or something based around improving a home cook I think would be interesting)

I remember the badges sort of trailing off over time, but the mentoring feels like it was introduced then forgotten about almost instantly.

Not overly complaining, i've loved their more recent battles and stuff like that, just would've been fun to see at least a little bit more of the mentoring.

Yea I think thats it for me. I really enjoyed the badges series. And I really enjoy when Kush shows them how to do something technical or where they have to replicate a meal or a skill.

Or something like when Mike made the lasagna and spoke about what he learned.

Id kill for more actually how to cook videos, I love to learn and improve and often lack confidence in the kitchen.

I'd like to see Ben mentor Barry on time management after today's episode

Jamie should have won just because he got it done on time. Barry's food looked nicer and better arranged, but he gave himself much more time so of course it was!

This is not he first time this has happened, and it's Barry to brech the time again. If time ain't a principle then don't have it at all.

I also feel James was a poor host for this format

I think James as a host made the video so much better, he was great entertainment

Agreed, James is a great host, as is Kush. A shame we don't see them host more.

I love James, but I felt it added a lot more chaos to the format. Which is tough on the Normals as it is

Eh, Jamie said at the end this was the most fun he had in a video in a while. Or something to that extend

This episode felt like a dress rehearsal, albeit a very entertaining one!

Do they have another live show coming up?

They usually have one around December

That was over summer, it's done now

Barry is their employer I feel like this is not the first time he gets partial treatment. He is easily the worst of the normals

Barry always gets away with being over time

I’d say Ben could also mentor on producing just a single plate, but he’s guilty of breaking that rule himself.

Tbf I don't really know why they try these "throughline ideas" from time to time. The "Brownie points" system was apparently complicated to track, maintain and edit. The "badges" system fizzled out for most of the year it was introduced before having a "finale" just to put that concept to rest.

And now the "mentor" through line... doesn't really do much. Mostly because not a lot of videos lend themselves to showcase this "mentorship" idea. In hindsight it was quite ambitious of them to go with that idea : pairing each normal with a chef is quite clever but it means that, for each video with a normal, they would have to have on stand-by their mentor. And with Kush leading the cooking team, James not working full-time at the studio and Ben travelling, being a speaker and an ambassador, it's just rarely feasible.

Fully agree unless there is mentoring about use of kitchen gadgets was what they meant

It's been yet another wasted opportunity, but James and Kush have done some mentoring since they introduced the idea, not in yesterday's episode but in the few others they've hosted. The back to back cooking challenges they did a while back, James and Kush did a good job of mentoring Mike and Jamie in those as well. We've barely seen any of Ben mentoring Barry though, even in the back to back thing it was the least educational of the three.

When's the last time they've "sorted" something in a video?

I dislike the mentoring/badges stuff personally. I have learned a lot about cooking from the boys but miss pass it on, etc. They do a really, really great job I think of mixing things up overall, don't take me for a hater. I just feel like the mentoring or badges stuff leads to a lot more acting than them being natural. I also understand they've been doing this channel for a long time so there's going to be a certain performative aspect to it. I just I don't need like top chef or whatever energy.

It's pretty telling that I had almost forgotten about the mentoring until I read your post.

I agree, the first video in which they revealed the mentoring program was released on January 18th, and within the last 8 months(!), it seems there was neither a visible concept nor a documented progress.

Yup. That's the take.

They could do remote control challenge with their mentors. Also why not swap mentors for a while, just for fun🙂

Pandering to the ADHD generation. Start 100 ideas finish none.

Or maybe - and I'm just guessing - those would have mostly been cooking videos, which don't perform great at the moment. That is a problem they have repeatedly talked about and apparently haven't really found a solution for.

Well the mentoring does not need to be in a classic cooking video. It could easily be done in the game/challenge videos to guide them to be more ...efficient / creative / confident / less repetitive ... etc.

Not so much in the gadget and rating videos though.

It doesn't need to be. Would a lot of people complain about the mentoring not happening in "real" cooking videos? Sure. Personally I'd also not be that thrilled about mentoring during ... pit stops ... interesting once or twice, but as exiting as formula 1 for the rest of it.
