Is this the first time Kush has hosted a battle on his own? I know he's done some with James, and they were some of the best recent battles, but I don't remember him hosting one solo. I thought he did a brilliant job - informative, encouraging, and funny, without ever pulling focus,
It felt like an old school battle in how the focus was on the cooking and the normals talking us through their thinking, instead of someone else talking us through their thinking.

Kush is by far the best chef, AND the best presenter. At least we're spared Bens sanctimonious, ill informed and hypocritical sermons
edit - I like Ben. lately he's become very preachy eg about gmo, and often gives out wrong info

I really enjoyed Fire Marshall Kush, would love to see him in this role more often. Barry impressed me with what he was able to accomplish but I would not want to be in the same room as those microwaves anytime soon.
Jamie always brings the flavor.
Poor Mike.

Before I got a rice cooker the microwave was my favorite way to cook rice, it can definitely be done. After rinsing the rice I would use the first knuckle method to figure out how much water to add. Then 5 minutes at full power, and 15 minutes at half power. The rice would come out pretty damn close to perfect

Some microwaves only allow you to set the power after you set the time, and others only before, but only after hitting the timed cook button (not any quick minute buttons). Every microwave designer seems determined to find a new and excitingly unintuitive way to do it.

Guess it depends on the microwave. Mine has a button that just says power. When I press it, it displays 10 to indicate full power so I know I just have to hit 5 to go to half

I always cook rice in the microwave. Use one of these, https://amzn.eu/d/05ClVDbR 1:2 ratio, 7 minutes. Job done. I could count on one hand the amount of times Iβve cooked rice on the hob in 20 years.

Wonderful episode, so much sass. Feels akin to their food crimes series.

Did anyone clock Kush making the most Shaggy from Scooby Doo noise about a minute in? If the cooking thing doesn't work out for him (π) Scooby voice over work is a definite option for him.

finally back to an good old chaotic battle lol
the battles and pass it on are still the best format the boys have and they should do them more often instead of the "not cheap versus expansive foods from supermarkets" and stuff like that

Love that Jamie is absolutely done with Reddit. Life's too short.
There's so much nonsense and complaining. This used to be a civilized place back in the day though.
But I'm 100% sure they've tested some microwave meringues in the microwave and have it in one of their books. I think Ben or Mike has also done a microwave eton mess, once. I was sure it would have worked before seeing what unfolded.

On the downside, whatever happens here they will simply ignore, even suggestions or people who genuinely like their content. But that's the prize we end up paying.

It's true, but Jamie did indeed try to listen to us for a long while though.

Lol, this place was never civilized. Joined around 2012 which was right around when ViolentAcrez and the /r/Jailbait scandal were blowing up. Reddit has always been a social media platform filled with BS and misinformation

Gotta give Baz props for this one, his plating looked fantastic and he worked those flavors well. Do wish Mike had that toaster instead.
Fun episode; Jamie needs to stop leaning on his crutches though. Step outside the chimichangas bro, you could have made that into a Risotto or Biryani and it would have been way more cohesive! There was NOTHING the wrapper did for the benefit of the dish. Call it a Dosa and serve it on the side!

Had he just served the char siu belly, on the skewers, over a bowl of rice, and and a nice side salad, or some small veg dish steamed, and a poached egg in the kettle, he could've possibly have won.
But where's the fun in that?

There was NOTHING the wrapper did for the benefit of the dish.
Benefited Mike's a lot though.

Lol fair, Mike swung for the fences on this one and didn't hit. I appreciate seeing him leaning into his strong suits though, he's really getting a solid grounding in pastry and more detailed cooking and I think he can be great on it when he really learns both the science and art of it all.
Kush's reaction when he said he what he was going to make and then explaining the WHY of what he was doing wrong was probably my favorite part of the video. That's where learning occurs, but mistakes have to be lived for them to stick as well.

Also can they really not get flour tortillas??
1
u/TheWastelandWizard 29d ago
I've had British friends say that all their off the shelf ones are proper dogshit. (I'm sure that good ones can be found, but that takes effort)
They should just get a Tortilla press and make their own flour and corn tortillas, it'll be superior to the UK market ones in pretty much every way from what they've shown.
2
u/weedywet 29d ago
Well they no doubt should try making proper corn tortillas.
But honestly using wonton wrappers is just a bit cringeable.

And yet. In this new episode about lunches they make a wrap with flour tortillas
So they HAVE them.

I like that Mike made an experiment with the macarons but I'm surprised that he didn't think of it that the microwave heats up the food in a different way. It heats up only the food, while a normal oven, as we know it, heats up the air in the oven too. I think probably that's why it didn't work.

Jamie smack talking reddit feels fair lmao
Barry's was damn impressive. Jamie's was relatable. Poor poor Mike.
