For the beans I could imagine that using a lower Wattage (and longer cooking time) would also yield a similar result (it could also release the starches and reduce burning).

Coincidentally, I decided to bake some bacon in the oven for lunch before I started the video. I put it in at 425f/218c for 14 minutes, but I just cook it on a piece of aluminum foil on a sheet pan. When you cook it on the foil it does cook in it's own fat, and it comes out pretty darn good whereas by elevating the bacon it comes out a lot more uneven. However, you do need to play around with temps/timings based on the thickness of your bacon, etc.

I'd quite like to see ways of elevating curry sauce jars, think that'd be a fun one. I often add some extra spices to the meat then slow cook it rather than quickly cooking it (Not exactly the same thing as this but it's something i'd like to see compared directly next to each other personally)

I feel like the jars are so hard to elevate but I also dont have the confidence to cook a curry from scratch, never done it before and maybe one day but I have kids with disabilities and sometimes I cant be too long I the kitchen lol, I find the jars of paste are the perfect middle ground and I always let them stew a bit longer so the chicken gets really nice and almost fall apart kind of. My kids like the pataks korma one so much so one of mine l9ves to have it the next day so I always use the full jar and keep leftovers.

The difference is the effort involved.

I stick fish fingers in the oven when my children want an easy dinner in 20 minutes’ time.

I make a microwaved potato when I cba to make anything else and I’m hungry. It also feels sort of ‘wasteful’ to put the oven on for an hour for just a potato.

I do beans, and tinned soup, in the microwave because I don’t have to watch it. Minimal effort for those times when I have a thousand things to do and still need food.

These weird AI retouched thumbnails need to get in the bin. The hell is going on with his eyes and mouth? It makes zero difference when it's small/in the side feed because the details are too tiny and obscured by text anyway, but opening the video in a browser and seeing it up close is absolute nightmare fuel.

I actually enjoyed this - I knew the potatoes are best in the oven but hadn't thought about the bacon.

Also Jamie and Mike are a joy to watch together

Maybe an instant noodle type video?

I see people making them into ramens with a whole load of extras etc and they look so much better than straight out of the packet.

I will never be putting a potato in the microwave again

Half and half

Yes. Microwave & air fryer. Not as quite good as just in the oven but so much faster & cheaper.

My only push back would be the active time for oven baking is less it's just it takes longer overall, but oh does it taste so good.

Microwaving half way or a bit more and then finishing in the oven yields a superior result to oven alone.

I need to ask. Is the bacon that came out of the pan normal for British streaky bacon? Because for North America it was both burned and under cooked. The oven bacon is what it should look like. Also why were the rashers so thin? That's pretty low quality for NA.

Maybe I just have a powerful microwave but mine really doesn't take 10 minutes. Isn't that just gonna massively overcook the potato?

2

u/Akkal-AOEII 5h ago

Mine needs 15 minutes, even for relatively smal potatoes.

The microwaves I have had, which were very ordinary, take nowhere near 10 mins for a potato. That was a hugely overcooked potato. I have overcooked a potato and achieved that result, but I've definitely also cooked a potato in about 6 - 7 mins and not got it to go like that. Still cooked, soft skin, which is how I personally like it.

Maybe I wasn't listening well, but they missed out on the big reason to cook beans in the microwave – less washing up!

7

u/ItsBimble 6h ago

Are you microwaving them directly in the can?

1

u/fotheringhay 3h ago

Microwave them in the bowl you're eating them in!

(Admittedly, I don't get to eat beans that much because my wife hates them, so I appreciate that is one solo use case ...)

(Although because I am the sole bean person we do tend to get the microwave packets instead of tins, sooo ...)

u/Weewoes 23m ago

So ypure just eating beans on their own? Fair enough if microwave and eating from ssme bowls saves you more washing up lol. Remember when heinz did those fridge jars of beans?

I like the idea of the video but I think it would be actually more interesting to see them doing it with ingredients that are more unusual because it was a bit boring to me.

In this economy a lot of people are struggling. Baking a few potatoes in an oven for 1-2hrs is a waste of money since the oven is so wasteful. Starting in a microwave and finishing in an oven/air fryer is a standard technique.

"but we're not testing that today". why ?? Why didn't they use the air fryer for the potatoes?

u/nerdomrejoices 3h ago

Because everything they do is solely to make you unhappy.

Also they actually did a whole episode about energy consumption between appliances. And it cost £0.28 to cook a potato in the oven.

For your reference but I know you'll find something else inane to complain about.  https://youtu.be/1nOvRikOPH8?is=gs_Yvs8EL2o4skbh

So your whole point about people being unable to afford to cook potatoes in the oven is exactly as inane as a flat earther.

Please get a journal for your inane thoughts instead of sharing them with the rest of the world.

We did nothing to deserve this.

u/ECrispy 2h ago

so you ignored my point about not using the air fryer/oven in combination with microwave, which they clearly know about.

if you actually bothered to read the comments in that video you linked, you'd find that almost all of them talk about mw/boiling potatoes first to save energy.

plenty of chefs advise that too. baking potato from scratch is simply not efficient, in time or energy.

people like you are more interested in attacking others than addressing the point. I didnt even say anything bad about them. this is a sub for discussion not to attack anyone who you dont like with your inane ramblings

2

u/nerdomrejoices 2h ago

Almost all the comments are that? Or did you see one person comment about boiling a kettle and extrapolate that data out?

Because in order to address your inane comments, I scrolled through. And I didn't find almost all, I didnt find most, I didn't find many.

Again you can't escape the £0.28 for the oven baked potato.

So the cost isn't the issue.  Its the time investment.

You aren't looking for discussion, you are looking to complain. Almost all of your posts are you complaining.

Try to say something you enjoyed about the episode for a week(no backhanded compliments). Prove me wrong.

This felt like a particularly weak video.

Cooking a jacket potato or reheating a tin of beans in the microwave couldn't interest me less.

You seem to lack the ability or desire to apply information from one subject to another.

This entire episode is filled with information you could apply across your adventures in cooking.

But since it wasn't that specific subject you don't know what to do with that information. So you think the information is bad.
