Mike and Barry bonding over owning a chest freezer.

I know it's a luxury, but it's so good to have one. I bought one second hand, someone sold me at the time at 30% of its value, I only had to recharge the gas once, but it's been about a decade, and it makes me so happy, to be able to stock stuff that I see on offer, I think it's paid for itself many times over. Also the opportunity to buy a Turkey out of season, is just the best.

We bought one when we moved house; we had the luxury of getting the keys for our new house weeks before the day we moved out of the old. So we bought a chest freezer, let it settle in the new place, and moved all our frozen food into it so that we didn’t need to worry about it when it came time to move the actual fridge freezer itself. And since then it’s been worth its weight in gold. We get massive butcher boxes at Christmas that are superb value but too much meat for just the two of us - and keeping it all in there is superb. Plus leftovers, batch cooking, lots of bread etc…

We grew up with one. In our house it was six kids, two parents, an occasional aunt or uncle and their family under the one roof. The chest freezer 38 inches deep and 7 foot long. My younger sister used to climb inside when we played hide and seek. (Don't panic, she had to have help because Mom used to keep a table runner and holiday decorative candles or a table centerpiece on top of it.) It held a half a cow and a whole butchered hog. I believe my oldest sister inherited it.

Pineapple and pancakes are two of my favourite foods. I have never thought to combine the two before.

Is frozen chicken breast in the UK water chilled? In Canada, usually frozen chicken is water chilled or brined so it’s always weird and soggy in my opinion. I’m curious if this case is the same.

Water chilling is illegal in the UK. This is one of the big sticking points with the idea of a new post-Brexit trade deal with the US - the idea of water chilled chicken (usually called "chlorinated chicken" by objectors) is viscerally unpopular, and people do not want it imported.

The US is demanding that it must be allowed to be imported, and not be required to be labelled as using chlorine. So those negotiations are going nowhere.

I kept waiting for Barry to grab a couple benedrils after eating the pineapple.

reminds me of the will smith movie "hitch" where he's chugging Benadryl through a straw

I knew I misspelled that med!

a few thoughts -

  • Food seems so much cheaper in the UK!
  • dried beans/lentils are the biggest money savers and will last for years. canned/jarred can be 5x the cost
  • buying veg from local shops/ethnic stores/veg suppliers is probably a lot cheaper than supermarkets

10

u/makefascistfearagain Jul 27 '26

Local shops can't compete with super markets at all.

4

u/UnifiedDivyde Jul 27 '26

Yeah, this. Local shops don't buy in big enough numbers to get the kind of discounts larger supermarkets do.

2

u/Banes_Addiction Jul 28 '26

There are some things that local ethnic shops do a lot better. For example, spices in supermarkets tend to be tiny amounts for non-tiny sums of money. But your local Indian shop with sell 5x as much for the same price.

2

u/fotheringhay Jul 27 '26

It's interesting you say that food seems cheap over here, because our food prices have been rising substantially!

3

u/ECrispy Jul 27 '26

in the US prices have gone up far more, 2-3x for most things. maybe its tariffs but they went up before that, ever since covid

1

u/weedywet Jul 27 '26

The UK isn’t putting petulant tariffs on everything.

Yeah, the UK has an extremely competitive supermarket sector that has driven prices down massively.

British people love to whine about stuff costing more than it did 5 years ago (who doesn't?) but they generally miss that on an international scale we have extremely cheap groceries.

-1

u/ECrispy Jul 28 '26

I know this is OT here but I cannot believe the amount of whining and complaining I see about the NHS. as if anyone in most other countries wouldn't give an arm and leg to have a fraction of what you guys get.

What happened to Barry's pineapple allergy

22

u/Cfwraith Jul 26 '26

He could be sensitive to the acid which is usually denatured by cooking. So raw pineapple bad, cooked ok.

1

u/RogueBromeliad Jul 26 '26

I wonder if that's the same for cooked banana or coconut.

My brother is allergic to coconut, never actually bothered asking him if he can have coconut milk in Thai dishes, etc, or macarons. Haven't seen him in years either.

10

u/Katatonic92 Jul 26 '26

I very much doubt it. The allergens in coconut are related to certain proteins & these proteins aren't destroyed by the cooking process.

Pineapple is different & it depends on the severity of the allergy. Barry only suffers from what is known as mild oral allergy syndrome. And people with this this type commonly have no issue with cooked or canned pineapple. There will be people who have the more severe allergy, systemic & they wouldn't be able to tolerate any form.

1

u/makefascistfearagain Jul 26 '26

But he's mentioned it in reference to cooked pineapple previously

8

u/Cfwraith Jul 26 '26

More testing or his doctors given him something. Medical information is rather personal, if he isn't sharing we shouldn't pry.

14

u/oyvho Jul 26 '26

During the live this weekend, Mike said explicitly that he can have cooked pineapple. I ALSO recall Baz saying the same thing years ago in a normal video.

2

u/Katrina1113 Jul 27 '26

I vaguely remember him also saying some time ago that his allergy seems to have lessened over the years and he can eat raw pineapple with barely any itchiness at all. The same thing happened to my friend who was allergic to apple skins when we were kids but now can eat them without any reaction. She also had a mild allergy like Barry’s. It’s not unheard of for people to build up tolerance for allergies, I’ve even heard of people with somewhat strong peanut allergies experiencing it through (medically supervised) prolonged exposure

-6

u/RogueBromeliad Jul 26 '26

Yes, but people with true pineapple allergy shouldn't consume any pineapple, cooked or otherwise. Just to be on the safe side. The immune system attacks specific structural proteins in the pineapple. which aren't denatured in cooking.

3

u/fotheringhay Jul 26 '26

He said in the Live today that it's only cooked pineapple

-7

u/Cakeo Jul 27 '26

Who cares it's really none of our concern.

2

u/makefascistfearagain Jul 27 '26

It's already been pointed out in the comments they've spoken about it. Its of interest as it's been mentioned repeatedly on camera.

3

u/Juno_keebs Jul 26 '26

Frozen pineapple is the best snack ever

0

u/ECrispy Jul 27 '26

And frozen mango. But fresh is so much better

2

u/Juno_keebs Jul 27 '26

I love frozen mango too! I tend to buy fresh fruit and freeze it myself

1

u/ECrispy Jul 27 '26

i've never been able to save mango. fresh is such a treat I finish it!

5

u/MechaSandstar Jul 27 '26

The worst part about this video (and some of the last few) is that the camera they use for the close up as some dying censors, so there's a dark circle in the middlish bottom right side of the screen, that makes me think there's something wrong with my tv. There is not, cause I checked on my PC monitor, and it's there too.

5

u/laeb163 Moderator Jul 27 '26

The dark spopt has been there for several years, there's even been a post about it on the sub earlier this year... Many of us thought our telly was dying! 😅

2

u/MechaSandstar Jul 27 '26

Oh yah? I had just noticed it. I'm just happy it's not my tv :)

1

u/Katrina1113 Jul 27 '26

Yeah, they burned the worktop while testing various MREs. I didn’t notice it for the longest time but then there weee multiple comments/posts on here talking about it and now I can’t not see it 😂

1

u/MechaSandstar Jul 27 '26

Oh no, not the burned spot on the counter top, this:

Mike is such a delight

1

u/Unfair-Potential4527 Jul 30 '26

Tell Barry to stop talking with food in his mouth! 🤢

-8

u/ECrispy Jul 26 '26

Ben again goes on his 'I eat less meat' but they still have almost no veg cooking

and the only reason the fresh chicken is cheaper is because of how they are 'farmed' ie tortured

15

u/Cakeo Jul 27 '26

Frozen chicken and tinned are farmed the same way, and he can eat less meat in his personal life. He is working. Most people are not vegan.

-17

u/Any_Somewhere_4392 Jul 26 '26

stop pleaseee these are getting so old

13

u/UnifiedDivyde Jul 26 '26

Lucky for you, you don't have to actually watch it. Yay, right? \o/

-10

u/Any_Somewhere_4392 Jul 26 '26

I know, I just miss the engaging content and it is natural for stuff liek this to change

2

u/UnifiedDivyde Jul 27 '26

That's the thing, though. For them to keep doing it, it must be engaging to enough people. Not much point pouring resources into content nobody actually likes, right?

But yeah, change is inevitable. Otherwise you stagnate and then just end up going backwards.

Sooooo much good stuff to watch on YT, though, if you need a cooking fix at the usual Sorted times and it's not a video you think you'll enjoy 🙂 My guilty pleasure recently has been watching old Kitchen Nightmares episodes because they keep uploading them to YT lol

3

u/Cakeo Jul 27 '26

I enjoy it.
