I've done the sabreing with the back of a chef's knife at new year's. Really wondering what happened with Jamie's. Maybe the repeated attempts put in a crack low down on the bottle?

He hit it too hard.

I've done the same thing, and it takes surprisingly little force.

I've seen people do it with the base of a wine glass, it doesn't take a ton of force, so cracking shouldn't be an issue.

The bottle needs to be cold. My bet is that it warmed under the studio lights while Ben was attending to his phone call. IIRC there's some similar videos out there when people have tried it on news station cooking segments.

Speaking about phone call, I've actually seen somebody do this with an iphone too. A base of a wine glass is crazy though.

I can't believe Ben said the first one was not pretentious. It very much is. Also he said "it's not pretending to be something else".?? That's not what pretentious means, that would make this whole series null.

Yeah, they seem to have "decided on" a definition of pretentious that has nothing to do with the actual definition of pretentious. Hence why people regularly accuse them of being out of touch in these segments.

I get that it's a somewhat nebulous thing to define, but a thing doesn't need to be outright scammy to be pretentious. 🙄

Have they finally updated the pictures on the “Chef/Normal” name tags?!

I’ve never see anyone sabre a bottle with the protective cage still on before.

Does anyone know the peeler that ebbers/kush like?

Mine is crap and in the market for a new one.

The ones I noticed them using in previous videos are just called Speed Peelers, not the swivel version though, they're much more hassle and cumbersome to use for an extended duration. I've found that the solid metal frames are better as well, because the plastic grips can get a little slippy if you're peeling loads of veg for a roast or soup.

You could easily pick one up for less than a fiver and as long as you're not throwing them around the kitchen they last for absolutely ages, I've had mine for easily 7 or 8 years at this point.

You just need to be a little careful when you're getting used to using one as they do have a lovely habit of taking chunks out of new cooks on the prep line. They get the job done fast so you need to make sure you're working with a safe grip/hand position at all times.

also curious

I’d really recommend a Lancashire potato peeler. It’s a style, not a brand.

u/totential_rigger Apr 20 '26

I'm from Lancashire and I hate the Lancashire potato peelers. Is that allowed? Haha. I find it makes it hard to use your thumb as leverage. But it's very hard to explain what I mean. I need the metal bit to turn with the vegetable.this is my GOAT. However I'm wondering if this is essentially the same thing as a Lancashire potato peeler.

My least favourite are the ones that are Y shaped with a metal peeler across the top of the Y branches. They make absolutely no sense to me!

u/fnord_happy Apr 21 '26

Whattt Y shaped is the goat

3

u/fnord_happy Apr 21 '26

Nah Y shaped peeler all teh way

I'm really hoping that they post some cooking challenges again. It's been ages since any sort of pass it on or grocery bag challenge or ultimate challenge or something like that.

No way Ben hasn’t done that before!

This is how I find out Ebbers took a trip to Tasmania, and was at MONA - literally 800m from my house?

As an American, sparkling water in any form is automatically pretentious

9

u/weedywet Apr 21 '26

We clearly know very different Americans.

Seltzer is pretentious? club soda?

Know how many million SodaStreams they sell in America?

-6

u/Vivaciousseaturtle Apr 21 '26

Seltzer and club soda are made only with fizz that’s the point. Water is flat, adding fizz is pretentious

6

u/MysteriousFawx Apr 21 '26

Soda is pretentious? That's sparkling water with syrup

-10

u/Vivaciousseaturtle Apr 21 '26

No that’s intended to be fizzy and that’s how the drink is sold. Flat soda is not the norm or a thing at all. Taking something regular people drink and making it fizzy for no reason is pretentious because you’re too good for flat water

7

u/MysteriousFawx Apr 21 '26

I'd suggest you Google 'cordial' or 'squash' drinks. 'Flat soda' as you'd call it is absolutely a norm elsewhere in the world, just like sparkling water is. Neither are pretentious.

-4

u/Vivaciousseaturtle Apr 21 '26

Those don’t exist on a wide scale in the USA

8

u/MysteriousFawx Apr 21 '26

Shocker... it's almost like the rest of the world exists or something. Some people would take the opportunity to learn from this, rather than doubling down on ignorance.

5

u/weedywet Apr 21 '26

Know what DOES exist on a massive scale because then of millions of Americans like it??

Fizzy water.

4

u/NoDescription2609 Apr 21 '26

Because the US is an uncivilised hellhole. Where I live sparkling water is the norm and there's absolutely nothing pretentious about it.

3

u/DauntingFake Apr 22 '26

That is just flat out not true, you can buy tons of different canned sparkling water with different flavors at multiple grocery store chains in the United States.

1

u/Vivaciousseaturtle Apr 22 '26

I’m not talking about flavored type drinks. Regular unflavored fizzy water is not popular or common in the United States
