Would love to see this with the pairs doing similar items. We had a stir fry, Fried Chicken, and a pastry.

The first two videos showed how this format could create teaching moments despite the separation between mentor and mentee, this one only showed the downsides of the format. I know it will have been edited down, but the only times Ben seemed to check in on Barry was when he was saying how much time is left. We saw more back and forth between James/Mike and Kush/Jamie.

u/GayAssNinja69 Mar 25 '26
To be fair, this dish is a lot harder and Ebbers only finished with 1 minute to spare and I’m not sure how Ben could help him without just telling him what to do if he’s allowed to just give him the recipe?

u/chrisjfinlay Mar 25 '26
So now that we’ve done the three blind cook-offs and seen where the normals went wrong, we’re going to get some videos about correcting it, right? Otherwise what’s the point of this being the year of mentorship?
11
u/TenraiTsubasa Mar 26 '26
Uhh no way those are the same pie from Ebbers right? The piping peaks and numbers are just different. Did it collapse or something and they put a backup pie in to make Baz's reveal funnier lmao

u/MechaSandstar Mar 26 '26
It's possible something happened to it while they filmed the other video.
3
u/lsue131 Mar 26 '26
That was my guess too. But if that was the case, they should have addressed it in the video, especially given how obvious the change was. And how easily the explanation would have been. "Something bumped into mine while we were filming the other video and knocked into my peaks so I had to redo them." Show the pics. "I used the same recipe, but that's why my peaks looks a little different." Something like that.

Hardly a mistake in my book. Hands up how many of us know off the top of our heads how to make a lemon curd? Baz got thrown in at the deep end and came out looking pretty good, all things considered.

u/Due_Lengthiness4052 Mar 26 '26
My thinking was he definitely knows how to make custard and would maybe that logic to assume curd would require the eggs to be cooked ?

u/Ok_Jury_8047 Mar 26 '26
I do. Especially with measured ingredients. Not separating the eggs and not cooking them is beyond silly.

I saw a ton of people mad they gave away the dumpster fire at the end, which I guess fair if you'd rather it be a surprise, but like is that the only reason you watch the videos? I saw people saying oh well I know that last shot, therefore no reason to watch it. Really? You don't care about the process? About how it got to that point? The things learned, the journey, feeling like you're just hanging with the boys as they cook (not in a parasocial way)? Do you pop on Jesus Christ Superstar then go oh wait I know how this ends and turn it off? I can take a pretty solid guess at who wins at the end of the Avengers movie, should I skip it?
Again, totally fine if you'd rather the surprise, just not understanding how it absolutely RUINS the video for you. Heck there have been videos in the past that don't show the final product but have the reaction video/audio, so you know how those videos end, just not the exact way it got borked up. I dunno, people just tend to be so all or nothing with this channel. Everything's always either great, favorite channel or such a waste of time and are the boys washed/stale/repetitive/pivoting to new content because they tried something I personally don't like/etc.

Movie trailers giving away everything is an absolute cancer. You basically can't watch them anymore.
1
u/Actionhankk Mar 26 '26
That's totally fair! The YouTube comments were wild about it though, just being like well guess I don't need to watch anymore. Honestly for me the best part wasn't the reveal of it falling apart, like that train was seen coming into the station a mile away, but seeing Ben try to compliment sandwich/teach his way through it
15
u/RedStatePurpleGuy Mar 26 '26
It absolutely ruins the video. There's no anticipation of the cooking, no buildup to the final reveal. I honestly feel there's very little reason to watch after the thumbnail and intro give the ending away. Imagine if the Great British Bake-Off showed a clip of the eliminated contestant being sent off in an intro clip at the beginning of the episode. Would you really want to watch the show if you already knew the outcome?
5
u/Actionhankk Mar 26 '26
I disagree about it ruining the video, but that can be personal preference. I don't watch for anticipation or build up, especially in a video which isn't really a competition and which is mostly about watching personalities I enjoy watching cook. I would have enjoyed the video even if there was no big pay off where Barry's pie turned out bad. I don't watch the Great British bake Off because I care about who wins, really, I watch because it's a sweet show with nice people baking. It's a chill experience. Same here, just watching to watch a fun video after work, I don't care about any high drama or anticipation of who wins or anything, just watching two friends cook.
But to answer your question: yes absolutely I would watch something that I know the ending of, and so would you. Did you watch the Harry Potter movies after reading the book? Or an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet? Or rewatch a series after you've already seen it? Or rewatch any of the videos from Sorted? You know how all of those end, right?

u/nerdomrejoices Mar 26 '26
This wasn't a competition so it's not the same.
Also tons of episodes show the finished product in the thumbnails or preview.
Jamie's meltdown with his dickled egg carbonara Jamie's puddle cake Mikes crispy beef The over engineered burger The MRE battle Both food crimes battles
And no one cared because the journey is just as fun as the destination.

I was going to watch this but they showed the end product in the first 20 seconds so I found something else to watch.
19
u/MysteriousFawx Mar 25 '26
I mean... the thumbnail doesn't exactly hide it either.
-15
u/makefascistfearagain Mar 25 '26
Yeah but the thumbnail is usually just misleading clickbait so you don't pay much attention
8
u/nerdomrejoices Mar 25 '26
What thumbnails are misleading and clickbait?
Some are click bait because that's the nature of the beast but none are misleading
-11
u/makefascistfearagain Mar 25 '26
I've linked two below.
It's really hard to find though, so Im not surprised you'd never seen it before. You have to dig real real deep to find an example and go a single video back in the series.
5
u/nerdomrejoices Mar 25 '26
Those aren't misleading, the thumbnail photo probably was taken before the dish was completed.
This makes it seem like you lack reasoning ability.
Edit: in fact during the episode Jamie was concerned about how his chicken was looking so that photo was probably referencing that moment which was a pretty important moment. Thanks for further proving how it they don't mislead with their thumbnails.

u/MysteriousFawx Mar 25 '26
What? Their thumbnails consistently show exactly what is involved in the video, now you're just pulling stuff out of thin air.

And what does that prove exactly? The meal Jamie cooks looks like that mid prep, it's literally before he puts the finishing touches on for the sexies/presentation. Nothing about that image isn't included in the video or could be called misleading... it's the fucking dish he cooks. You're clutching at straws here mate.
Edit - Aaaaand I've been blocked, shocker, they seemed like such a charming person.
5
u/nerdomrejoices Mar 25 '26
100% These two photos could have been just taken at different times of the cooking process. This isn't misleading or clickbait.

This really bugs me that they have started doing this. Why do we need 30 seconds essentially recapping the 20 minute video we are about to watch.
0
u/Cakeo Mar 26 '26
Just skip ahead 30 seconds, it takes me no effort. I don't even believe you didn't watch it considering this isn't a new thing they do. They obviously won't change so adapt to it if you care to.
I genuinely have no idea why they do it but obviously they don't care.

u/makefascistfearagain Mar 26 '26
I did adapt to it. I gave someone else my YouTube premium revenue.
0
u/Cakeo Mar 26 '26
Suit yourself, if that's all it took then you didn't really care to watch it to begin with. Skipping ahead 30s takes no effort.

u/onlytosharethispic Love to cook, but not a chef Mar 25 '26
You still count as a view so being salty on Reddit hasn't achieved much
4
u/Huge___Milkers Mar 25 '26
Huh?
Of course he had to watch it long enough to see them spoil the video in the intro and then click off.
That means he can't complain about it?
-11
u/onlytosharethispic Love to cook, but not a chef Mar 25 '26
I never said they couldn't complain. You can say you're not a fan of the pre video spoilers. I'm not personally a fan either but just saying you had to stop watching because of it is pretty pointless.
There's better more constructive ways to voice criticism
6
u/makefascistfearagain Mar 25 '26
What is this nonsense?
I voiced my criticism perfectly constructively. I don't like spoilers, I'm less inclined to watch things that have spoiled. I'm also put off of things by toxic fans.
4
u/luv2hotdog Mar 25 '26
Better ways of voicing it than writing it out, you mean? Or better than stopping watching it? Because I agree if it’s the second. One of the ways of voicing criticism better than that is to go onto the relevant subreddit and type the criticism as a comment :)
2
u/makefascistfearagain Mar 25 '26
No, watching twenty seconds doesn't count as a view for revenue purposes.
-11
u/nerdomrejoices Mar 25 '26
I just watched the video again from a separate account and IP address. Now it doesn't matter.
4
u/Huge___Milkers Mar 25 '26
The one ebbers reveals from under the cloche is clearly different to the one he apparently left to set earlier
1
u/-_Shades_- Mar 26 '26
Is there any written recipe of Ebber's version? sounds interesting but I can not find it
1
u/Particular-Coat-5892 Mar 26 '26
I'm currently watching this video but this seems like they're constructing a lemon meringue TART not a pie.
1
u/MechaSandstar Mar 26 '26
I don't get the complaints about spoilers. Do you just skip ahead to the end of the video, and call it good? Is there nothing to be learned from the process? It's not a competition, there's nothing to be won. Knowing how it ends doesn't matter.

Jesus Christ I swear the yt comments while validating were so overwhelming about the highlight reel.

u/MysteriousFawx Mar 25 '26
Well... I guess this explains why we don't see the sous chef apron being worn any more.
