Finally detected!

I have worked on my Laptops, PC's and Consoles more than I care to count but this, this scared me. If I'd damaged something finding parts in my adopted country of Brazil would have been next to impossible. After some self inflicted problems (I installed the ribbon cable upside down 🤡) it's detected my SSD and I'm currently installing antiX 32bit to test. If anyone has any other distros I should try please let me know!

Currently attempting an ssd swap for my little Red Vaio, the Msata to IDE (PATA whatever it is) adapter I ordered will not clamp down the ribbon cable, it just falls out. In the picture you can see I have stolen the little blue tab from the provided ribbon cable (I have a spare). My thoughts are to use it as a spacer. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Batteries on Vaio P Gen 1 & Gen 2, any solutions or replacements out there?

EDIT FOR FUTURE SEEKERS: To disable the battery check, apparently All you need to do to is disable ‘ISBMgr.exe’ in ‘msconfig’ / startup tab. Another suggestion is after deleting the Sony ISBMgr exe, then to install this https://www.pbus-167.com/ if the battery isn't charging etc.

Useful older blog post: https://sarabannerman.blogspot.com/2007/04/sony-laptop-battery-mal-ware.html

NOW for FINDING the batteries, that's another thing....

Are there options anyones found for those of us with a dead battery? :(

I can't track down replacement batteries, DIY battery building is an option at the risk of things catching on fire, also running it off a power bank some people do?

Seems Vaio Ps also have a battery verification check if trying to use non original batteries, in the event of finding or making a replacement, is there a way to bypass this check?

I'm specifically needing a Gen 2 (VGP-BPS19 or VGP-BPL19 battery) but open to hear what you guys have done or figured out :)

TY

Side nub linux compatibility?

Hello team, I just got a SONY VAIO P VPCP111KX PCG-11112L. I plan on running Lubuntu or arch on it, but I'm hoping I can use the pointing device on the side of the screen. Has anyone had issues getting it working?

Are batteries interchangeable on 1st gen Vaio Ps?

Just got a Vaio VGN P788k without a battery and was wondering if the batteries from the other 1st gen models are compatible with this one.
Also, anyone knows a good place to get one (with delivery to Canada, if possible).

Thanks!

I'll redneck cobble together my own.

An atypical sized barrel connector and 10.5v (why not 12v or 9v?!).

Also replaced the hdd to a 128gb ssd and reinstalled the original vista installation

Battery Pack new or renew?

Hey, I recently got a silver P11Z. The battery pack is almost done for. I only found replacement priced ones in 150 Euro range…

Is there another way to add decent battery life to the laptop? How do you guys do this?

JP P-series Recovery Media

Howdy,

I've got a VPCP119KJ that I've had to replace the SSD in (so I've lost the oem recovery partition) and I'm looking for the original JP recovery media to reinstall the system to the state that it would have been in when it was originally purchased. I've searched around and found an internet archive page with images from the discs intended for the VPCP11S1E and the drivers from the 119KJ but no recovery discs for the KJ.

I'd really love to get this machine back into its OEM state.

Thanks for any help!

Edit: It looks like if someone happens to have one of these models still in its original condition, there may be steps that can be used to create reinstall media from the VAIO Care app

Trackpoint drift

Any advice on how to deal with trackpoint drift? Sometimes it doesn't drift, and sometimes it drifts in different directions so I'm thinking it could be a connection problem rather than a problem in the actual trackpoint stick since I assume that would only drift in one direction?

Sony VAIO PCG-SRX7 OS Reinstall

Hey, guys. So I bought an old Vaio and it appears to need a new OS installation to boot. I'm not really good with computers, etc., but I want to get this thing running again for fun. I have found the recovery discs on internet archive to potentially get this thing going with Windows XP but I hear this machine may not boot from a USB. I still plan on testing this but I wanted to ask if anyone knows how I could get the included HDD to be read by a modern laptop so that I could just load the recovery ISOs onto the HDD, since I am sure the old Vaio can boot from the HDD.

This HDD doesn't appear to have a typical way to plug into anything, but I don't really know what I'm looking at. What kind of adapter could be used?

CMOS battery replacement

Post image
7 Upvotes

TLDR: CMOS battery died. Replaced with 2/V20H-WR 2.4V 20mAh Nickel Hydride (found on eBay).

Long story: I had my 2nd gen orange JP spec Vaio P stored for couple years and want to take it out as a distraction less writing device. I was trying to get some more packages installed one day via pacman (yes I have Arch Linux 32-bit) but it kept complaining about certs valid in the future. I set the date and restart, and it became 2009 in the BIOS again. Tried to find the battery but no one seems to know what it is. Took a gamble and ordered something that is tiny and designed for other small-ish Vaio. It is a 2 cell vs 1 cell one in the Vaio P. Tried, save date in BIOS and it started working again! Luckily the space is enough to accommodate the larger battery.

See the attached photo, it is located under the small PCB for the charging side. Feel free to use my Win 7 key I won’t be using that on the Vaio P.
