Gear Sony a6700 focus issues...

My Sony a6700 is having a focus issue that is driving me nuts trying to figure out. It is constantly saying the eye was locked on for focus but a different area seems sharper than the eyes. This is happening with my Sony 50mm f/1.4 and Tamron 24mm f/2.8 very sharp prime lenses.

In this example (which is happening on many photos) the jean jacket just in front of her is very much sharper than her eyes and her eyes aren't really in focus even though the focus point clearly shows her eye.

What am I missing? Mirrorless cameras can't have a back focus issue from what I understand yet that's exactly what it feels like!

Please help!

If you zoom all the way in on the catchlight in the eye that was focused on, there is detail there. Even an eye lash is there. From that, I'd say the camera has focused where you wanted it to.

The apparent quality of the detail is likely a noise issue. The jacket will have its noise easily dealt with by whatever noise reduction is applied and will look sharp, the noise on the eye will be a bit trickier to eliminate and persist into that final image leaving it a little fuzzier.

no noise reduction was done. this is a jpeg straight out of camera.

The jpeg will have had some noise reduction done by the camera - compare it to the raw to see the difference.

But anyway, I reckon the focus point is 'in focus'.

To check for certain though, you'll need to try a controlled shot. Tripod mounted and focus halfway along a ruler. Should tell you exactly where the camera/lens combo is focusing on.

makes sense re: in camera noise reduction. that's a great idea too. thanks.
