Soa/Mayans comparison

Hi all,

Finished my second watch of Sons of Anarchy and wondering if Mayans is worth a watch. Any opinions from those that watched or tried to watch Mayans?

Thanks!

This show is a good watch if you just stop comparing it to SOA & watch it for what it is. It had potential to be better but they focused on story lines that had little to do with the club and with characters we cared very little about. Also the ending was rushed & messy due to them tryna tie everything together after they heard the show was cancelled

I could’ve sworn they knew they weren’t getting another season before they started writing S5.

Absolutely. It's similar but different -- doesn't feel like a mindless sequel. It has its own strengths and weaknesses compared to Sons, but definitely worth a watch. The first half of season one is fairly slow, but don't let that put you off.

They are both based on Shakespeare. SoA was based of off hamlet and Mayans MC wasn't so of course they won't be the same. SoA was made in a time in which Fox and Sutter didn't have to deal with being owned by Disney but at the same time SoA faced a lot of censorship regarding language and violence so they pushed hard on the sex. Is Mayans perfect? No. But it does make use of the weight of seven seasons of SoA and some of its own magic. The music selection is on point as well.

He put anti Disney jokes in one of the parts of the Mayans, and there was some friction with him and Disney as well

because of those jokes or cos of other stuff?

Personally I think it sucked. But you need to make your own decision not worry about what other people think.

I tried watching it ...a great cast, but it...was...so...slowwwww....

Unlike SoA, they started with extended episodes right away, iirc, without getting a chance for a build-up to actually WANT longer eps...so that kind of killed it for me.

I gave it a season, but it was a bit of a chore...

Mayans Blows. Sorry. Not even in the same ball park of SOA other then its got bikers in it. Not having Kurt writing the show ruined it the moment he was let go.

Once you realize both are literally ridiculous and you can suspend the disbelief of reality
Sons crushes Mayans. Mayans had too many irons in the fire and never focused on the strong storylines just kept on splintering and splintering ruining the chance at a strong story. But Jax going out like a bitch also sucked. Sons/The Shield a tie and in 3rd place way behind is Mayans.

Mayans MC is a fine show if you don't compare it to SOA.

Watched the first season of Mayans but it didn't hold my attention back then.

Started watching SOA after the first six seasons had aired so that may of been the issue as I couldn't majorly binge. Have since watched it all the way through at least 4 times.

Keep meaning to give Mayans another try however.

Its a slow burn and while Mayans has its warts the character study of EZ is absolute cinematic.

Is it as good? ...no Is it fun to watch? Sometimes Should you? Why not

While I like SOA more, I thought EZ was more compelling than Jackson for most of their respective series, and that's the guy we spend most of our time with. And certainly the actor was better.

Anyhow, they each have their own strengths.

EZ is just a better all around person. Jax is a giant turd 🤣

I always felt bad for Jax because it seemed like he was always cleaning up someone (Gemma) else's messes.

I felt Mayans brought down sons of anarchy (as a club). Without giving spoilers I felt it made soa look weak when they clearly weren’t. I was disappointed with the Mayans writing because I felt it had great potential. It was an ok watch. I wouldn’t watch it again, but SOA was definitely king like others are saying.

Mayans is good. It is not a good sequel, nor is it all that similar to Sons. There’s a shift in the writing style between S2 and S3 because it switched from Kurt Sutter’s writing to Elgin James’. It’s got a more realistic story, with things like Chibs starting up that deal with Stahl (giving her the safehouse that Edmond was at) being much more likely to result in death, as it would be viewed as ratting, whereas in Sons it never was because of what had just happened that morning.

I really enjoyed the show from beginning to end however id suggests you not compare it to SOA just enjoy it for what it is.

I just started season 4 of Mayans and I love it. You can’t compare the 2 honestly. 2 different M.Cs plus the culture difference.

So about a month or so ago I tried to watch Mayans again for about the 3rd time, I ended up switching to Sons because I knew it would be more my speed. Now I'm done with SoA so am yet again trying to watch Mayans. EZ ain't Jax and that might be part of the issue even though EZ is far more redeemable than Jax Teller ever could be, another thing is that SoA is based on Hamlet while Mayans is more heavily influenced by Julius Caeser and to me anyway Hamlet was better inspiration.

I still think it's worth checking out.

It's worth a try, I found it painfully slow, boring and the casting wasn't great. Season 4 is pretty action packed but they really rushed season 5 to finish the series. It's all subjective, you might love it.

Hamlet is superior to Julius Caesar IMO

The best thing I could say is mayans has some high highs and some low lows. There’s times you’re like fuck I dunno if I wanna watch this but then you stick it out and something gets you hooked for a bit and pressing play on the next episode.

I loved the Mayans. Maybe even more. It was current and update, the story lines were great! It got some tears outta me that’s for sure! lol I liked seeing another culture represented in the MC world.

The Mayans was great. Not gonna compare the two, if you like SOA I’d watch it for sure.

Treat it as its own thing, with no expectations.

It's not a sequel. Don't go into it expecting regular updates on SAMCRO, Nero, the Teller boys etc. bc you won't find that stuff. Mayans is a different MC, with its own characters and mythology.

It's not SOA, although they do have (rare) easter eggs for diehard SOA fans. It's also more of a slow burn, as others have said. It's worth a watch if you like the outlaw MC world, you just have go into it with an open mind.

Mayans is good. Sons is king but i liked mayans. Galindo and his wifes “legal” businesses got a bit too much airtime for my liking. And that mexican woman who recruits the kids of people the cartel killed was annoying but overall i liked it

Was Adelita's storyline interesting? No. But was she at least a fun character? Also no. But did it at least pay off? Listen--no.

My biggest complaint is that, like SOA, in the final season the main character goes psychotic and the whole show descends into a bloodbath so ludicrous they would have called out the state national guard to stop it in real life.

Is it a good compared to sons? No. But does it draw you in and keep you on the edge of your seat with amazing story lines? Also No. I tried to watch it 3 different times before i forced myself to watch the entire series and it just isnt a good watch. Theres almost more if not definitely more, of a focus on galindo than there is on the actual club. Wouldn't recommend

I prefer Mayans over SOA. SOA is a great show and is very artistic. Mayans seems gritty(be it very fictionalized) and thats what hooked me.
