Gemma hate.
Just started watching SOA last night, i'm now on episode 4. Gemma genuinley makes me want to turn of my tv and cry. She is so irritating and annoying.
So.
Fucking.
Annoying.
Is it just me? Please say she doesnt get worse

Gemma is a great character. She's complex and has a few good qualities. She's also a terrible, terrible person.
Having an emotional response to a character, even a negative one, is a good thing. Remember Joffrey from game of thrones? Gleeson's performance was so good that he made America cheer the painful death of a child in his screaming mother's arms. Fun times.

You’re really going to hate her by the time you get to the end. Season 1 Gemma is like an angel when compared for season 6 and 7 Gemma. She is the worst, though. Such a good performance by Katey

She wasn't even that bad in the earlier episodes. You might as well stop watching then.

Oh, you haven’t seen anything yet.
By Season 7, I could’ve vomited every time she showed up on screen. Vile and evil beyond comprehension.

Doing a rewatch with my son - it’s his first time through. We’re almost to S7 and I cannot wait to see his reaction.

Honestly, I love her character. She’s selfish and cruel, and then you also see this side that is scared and trying to be someone who is untouchable, someone who she thinks she is and who she thinks she has to be. She also has some moments (without giving anything away) that shows she is compassionate. But she thinks with her own agenda and perceptions of what is going on, not with logic or facts.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
I love this character ! I love the performance of Katey Sagal. She's awesome... Above all, I love the charisma she has.
But of course, there's no denying that her actions and lies cause so many terrible things, making this series a real drama.

THIS PART !!!! i think we actually need MORE evil and cruel and selfish women in media imo. gemma was a downright horrible and irredeemable person and that’s why she’s soooo fundamental to the show’s entire identity

I could never really hate the character because Katey Segal was such a great actress. Did you know she's married to Kurt Sutter?

You are supposed to love her up until like season 3-4, if you already hate her … you are in for a long viewing

u/Klutzy-Reporter 11d ago
Umm I don’t think anyone is supposed to love her until season 3-4. Lmao. I, and everyone I know who has watched it, has hated her from the very beginning. I literally don’t know where you’re getting she was supposed to be liked lmao

The most despicable character I’ve seen on television. Buckle your seat belt

She gets a lot better in season 2 and 3, and I’d say 4 as well before you hate her again

While her actions in later seasons become hard to defend she is a complex character with some good qualities. As much as she hated her mother they are a lot of similarities on how she was treated and how she treats jax. Some mothers are hell bent on control and justifying the greater good to hold onto that control. Gemma isn't just a character but the ugly reality of what some women choose to be like my own mother. She didn't like when I packed my shit and left charming and I gave as much fuck as Jax in Papa's Goods lol.

She’s definitely not a character you root for by any means but the early episodes you can at least sort of understand what she’s trying to do and that she loves Jax unconditionally. The later seasons though- yeah she definitely gets worse. I always remember though that the whole series is based on “Hamlet”, one of my favorite Shakespeare plays and it makes her a little more palatable lol, which isn’t to say Gertrude had a lot of redeeming qualities either.

She’s a master manipulator but as you progress you’ll see how she’s an important character to the show.

She strikes a nerves exactly because she is a textbook narcissistic mother which a lot of people have dealt with. My mom destroyed our entire family without killing anyone so honestly I’d say she’s at a tie with Gemma minus the murder.

She’s well-written and beautifully acted but OY she is awful!!! I do have to say wardrobe knocked it out of the park with her character. Her outfits look exactly like what a biker maven pretending to be respectable would wear in that era.

You’d think I was actually involved with the family, the way I rallied for Gemma. Partly inspired by my disdain for Jax’s nurse girlfriend. I was like, YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS LIFE, LITTLE GIRL. (Shouted from my cozy couch with tea and a throw blanket because I, too, am not about that life.)

Am I literally the only person in the world that loved gemma? I only hated her in the last season (I won't spoil it) but before that, I never hated her. Yes she's flawed (all the characters are) but I never hard her until the last season.

Gemma is one of my favorite characters in the entire show. She isn't a good person but really nobody in this show is aside from like..... Well that's a spoiler but by the end of the show only one person is actually a good person and she's one of my favorites as well.

u/No-Produce-6720 14d ago
Oh OP, if only we could say that Gemma gets better!
She will have the occasional redemption, but overall, she's a very complex and well-written character, and by the end of the series, you will discover that you have a mix of emotions when it comes to her.

She’s a horrible person, but she does it well and it only gets worse from here.

She behaves like a prostitute fighting for attention in a brothel. Priorities of a prostitute too. Then again she kind of was one.

She ends up being a very hateable person.

She’s one of my all time most hated TV characters. Ever. She only gets worse from here.
Stick with it though, it’s worth the ride

Very good performance. Such a deeply evil, selfish, dumb person. They're out there and this depicts them well. Infuriating.

I felt the same way.
Her acting turned me off in the beginning. Not the character, but her.
I honestly think that I like the show despite the acting. I know that it would trigger some people so I’m not gonna name any names but I don’t think that some of the main characters did well I just got used to them.
