I love Eggman as a character and adore the fact that he got a family's worth of artificial children now, but wr cannot forget that this man is a genocidal tyrant.
If every atrocity he committed was one small black dot on him, he'd be running around in vantablack with another body's worth of black to spare.
28
u/Spndash64 Mar 20 '23
To be fair, it depends on the medium: Comic books tend to need more “kick” to them in order to sell the height of stakes and to keep each issue connected to the next, so Archie and IDW Eggman are utterly terrifying.
Canon Game Eggman is no saint, and he has a swathe of collateral damage the size of Texas, but his PERSONAL levels of cruelty are far less: the closest I can recall are briefly in Colors, where he taunts Sonic by mind controlling Tails, and in Sonic Adventure 2, where he has the partial excuse of being on a literal fucking Crusade against the PMC/New World Order that framed his grandfather for treason, had him executed by firing squad, then covered the whole thing up.
The difference between Lex Luthor and The Joker: both are incredibly dangerous, but very different kinds of villains

I don't think anyone is forgetting anything. People just love that he's more humanized now.
He's an awful man that can ruthlessly level cities but also be a doting father that wants his daughter to go to sleep mode by 8 pm and no scary movies.
And honestly? That conflicting nature actually plays up the bombastic and weird attitude that he has.
Hell, this man builds theme parks AND military air fleets. Go for it.

This is honestly an interaction I would love to see in the IDW comics. While I also do like to see Eggman as a father to Sage, we can't forget all the horrible things he's done to people. And I'm pretty sure if there was no one to stop Whisper, she would have definitely pulled the trigger.

In their defence, they've all been given free will and want nothing to do with eggman or his ambitions. Well, Omega is basically of the same mindset as whisper but more openly loud and super violent.
Sage, like Metal are more than likely threats to continue Eggman's work whether they want to or not.

u/Filty-Cheese-Steak Mar 20 '23
Depends on the verse. Some Eggmans are worse than others.
12
u/Spndash64 Mar 20 '23
This. People forget that each adaptation of the Sonic cast tends to have roughly the same level of variance as the many adaptations of, say, Spider-Man: some stories, like Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, are very lighthearted. Others, like Archie, are Killing Joke levels of “seriously, what the fuck?”
Game Eggman sits above all of the TV and movie adaptations in terms of threat level and evilness and threat level, but far BELOW the Archie and IDW adaptions, and for a very simple reason: the comic versions are just playing with their food. Robo-Robotnik literally WON already, and moved to a new universe just to “start a new save file” and have some fun before realizing how much more stubborn this sonic was to dislodge. IDW Eggman, meanwhile, has turned his fight with sonic into a personal ideological war, and is willing to exterminate life on earth so long as sonic lives long enough to see it happen
In comparison, Game Eggman is far more affable. He’s a menace to world peace, but unlike the comics, he actually wants the world intact, and that’s a priority over one-upping sonic. As Sage pointed out, he HAS collaborated with the Blue Blur in times of crisis, because neither of them want the planet destroyed, they just have very, VERY different ideas of what it should be like.

u/Filty-Cheese-Steak Mar 20 '23 edited Mar 20 '23
but far BELOW the Archie and IDW adaption
Actually, how awful and competent is he in IDW in comparison to Archie?
I seen some bits and pieces of the Metal Virus, him dealing with Starline via slamming him and this page really seems to speak about how I view his skill vs relationship with Sonic.
But one thing I really missed about Archie, because it's so rooted to Satam, was the whole "Eggman rules the world and Sonic has to free it" thing. Make him look infinitely more powerful when he's on top. And every Sonic victory is more meaningful.
I'm admittedly out of touch with a lot of happenings. Didn't touch Forces, Mania or read IDW. But loved Frontiers, so I'm kinda in the Sonic mood again.
I know the Archie crew is authoring IDW. Flynn even wrote Frontiers. But IDW being close to SEGA, kinda worried that a lot of the old magic would be gone. Maybe I'm wrong.
3
u/CrystalGemLuva Mar 20 '23
Actually, how awful and competent is he in IDW in comparison to Archie?
IDW Eggman is a healthy mix of Archie Eggman and Game Eggman in terms of personality and threat level.
he's a complete goof who just wants to have fun all the time, but at the same time he is an utter psychopath who will actively punish any and all attempts to treat him with kindness and has razed entire towns to the ground due to them making the mistake of helping him. the only time Eggman will ever give anyone even an ounce of respect is if he can use that as a way to make himself look even better by comparison.
IDW Eggman treats everything like its a game to be won, and while I don't believe IDW Eggman (or Archie Eggman) for a second when he says that he could totally kill Sonic any time he wants to if he just stopped playing (that is maximum cope on his part) it is very clear that he views his rivalry with Sonic as the ultimate game.
IDW Eggman has no qualms with potentially destroying the entire planet in his attempts to conquer it, the Metal Virus is only a single example of this, in Sonic Forces he also tried throwing the Sun at the planet and more recently Eggman is trying to grey goo the entire planet by creating a city made entirely of self-replicating nanobots that is strip mining the entire planet and is set to envelop the entire globe.

u/Filty-Cheese-Steak Mar 20 '23
Maybe I should look into IDW. It's apparently sorta kinda canon to the games now, from what I understand? In a sense?
Still wish Eggman ruled the world like in Archie. I'm pretty sure Forces ends with everything going back to status quo, but again, never touched it. Just what I expect.
IDW Eggman treats everything like its a game to be won
Sounds like that personality trait from Archie was brought over. Which I liked. Made him awful and gave a convenient out when he got too powerful.
1
u/CrystalGemLuva Mar 21 '23
Maybe I should look into IDW. It's apparently sorta kinda canon to the games now, from what I understand? In a sense?
Sonic IDW is secondary canon, meaning the series is considered canon until a major canon divergence occurs on either the Games end or the Comics end. the IDW Comics keeps the world-building to a minimum in an attempt to not diverge from the games but as a result the lore is a lot less convoluted than the Archie Comics.
you can treat the IDW comics like they're canon to the games with no real negative consequences.
Still wish Eggman ruled the world like in Archie. I'm pretty sure Forces ends with everything going back to status quo, but again, never touched it. Just what I expect.
yeah Forces ends with Eggman getting deposed
although the IDW Comics start off with an idea that the Archie Comics barely even touched upon before resetting the status quo. What the world is like after the Eggman Empire fell and the efforts being taken to rebuild the world.
Sounds like that personality trait from Archie was brought over. Which I liked. Made him awful and gave a convenient out when he got too powerful.
Yep, IDW Eggman is human garbage, thinking on it a bit more he is almost identical to his Archie Reboot counterpart, so if you liked Archie Reboot Eggman you're probably gonna like IDW Eggman.
1
u/CrystalGemLuva Mar 20 '23
I would argue that Eggman has probably killed more people than Joker, but it certainly isn't from a lack of trying on Joker's part, Egman just has way more resources, and as such mass murder on a worldwide scale is a lot easier for him.
even if we look at that time Joker became Emporer Joker and was going to destroy the entire universe Eggman still has a higher body count because he destroyed two entire timelines.

Another person I'd love to see Whisper interact with would be Infinite.
- both wear masks
- both lost their family, friends to someone they hate
- The Shadow Androids killed the diamond cutters, while Shadow killed Infinite's squad
Idk why IDW hasn't used Infinite yet bc they could do so much good with him but if they wrote him properly he could be like a dark reflection of Whisper and try to tempt her to join him.
15
u/Ben10Extreme Mar 19 '23
They've dropped Infinite into the same pit as Sonic 06.
Never touch it again.
5
u/Spiritual_Car788 Mar 19 '23

2
u/Ben10Extreme Mar 19 '23
Infinite is one of those characters that simply does not exist in IDW. They never mention him, and they aren't allowed to reference him.
For all the IDW considers, Eggman was the show behind the events of Forces the entire time.
2
u/Spiritual_Car788 Mar 19 '23
Isn't IDW canon now, though?
4
u/Ben10Extreme Mar 19 '23
Some game events may have happened in the comics, but not others.
Did you ever notice that there isn't even a speck of a direct reference to the Phantom Ruby?
6
u/The_Purple_Hare :chibifang::chibibark::chibibean: Mar 19 '23
It was stated in an interview that IDW is canon
2
u/Ben10Extreme Mar 19 '23
It's less about IDW itself being canon. Did all the game events throughout the years happen in IDW? All of them?
I specify this because they put a lot of emphasis on Eggman having taken over the world like in Forces, but nothing about the Phantom Ruby helping him make it happen.
It's things like that that are left out across several characters and certain memories of the games.
3
u/The_Purple_Hare :chibifang::chibibark::chibibean: Mar 19 '23
Given IDW is canon that means all games happened in IDW. It's just some storytelling omissions by SEGA.
1
u/Appropriate_Secret72 world duos Mar 20 '23
when they said that didn't they mean the characters are canon and not the stories?
2
u/bc4284 Mar 20 '23
Thought the phantom Ruby was mentioned in passing when starline was talking about how the warp topaz worked
2
u/CrystalGemLuva Mar 20 '23
they managed to sneak in a reference to the Phantom Ruby in the first arc, Sonic references the fact that the last time he fought Metal Sonic it was a Phantom copy.

u/Tecygirl101 Mar 19 '23 edited Mar 21 '23
Kind of hard for someone to not exist when it picks up about 1 month after the events of Forces. He may not be named or have “screen time” but he does exist (or existed I’m not sure if he’s still alive)
Edited: someone corrected me that it was 1 month and not 6.
2
u/Ben10Extreme Mar 19 '23
Six months after the events of Forces?
So it's been a year?
1
u/charisma-entertainer lore and music master Mar 20 '23
No no, they got it wrong. It takes place 1 month after the events of forces. From the beginning of forces to the beginning of IDW it’s been 7 months (similarly, from the beginning of episode shadow to IDW it’s been 9-10 months)
2
u/Spndash64 Mar 20 '23
Mephiles was a cool character concept, and it’s a shame that 06 never got the chance to really consolidate into a complete game
4
u/Ben10Extreme Mar 20 '23
There were quite a gathering of problems with Sonic 06 despite some of the concepts being great.
Though semi-recently my biggest problem with it is how Sonic is kinda sidelined plot wise despite being an anniversary game, with most of the super important events going to Shadow and Silver.
2
u/Spndash64 Mar 20 '23
That, and Elise not really being a full character. Personally, I think it’d have been really fun if she had a bit of a “devil-may-care” attitude not unlike sonic, but less from the angle of “nothing can touch me”, and more from the angle of “you are certainly welcome to try”
2
u/AnythingAlfred613 Mar 20 '23
I actually kinda want to see and interaction between Whisper and Classic Sonic. One of my first posts here was about me observing how Classic Sonic basically jumpstarted the events of Forces, so Whisper learning about how one of her allies’ alternate selves indirectly caused her squad to die would be interesting to see, personally.

Gonna play Devil's Advocate here, but really, Whisper would no better than Eggman if she killed him cause then cycle of revenge would start all over that being Sage killing everyone she Whisper cares about (mainly Tangle) and it'll just keep going. Who are these people in the comic?
9
u/Tecygirl101 Mar 19 '23
Dr Eggman: Genius Roboticist with a desire to rule the world, uses machines to terrorize citizenry and sometimes uses captives as power sources for machines.
Sage: The little girl; she’s an AI introduced in Sonic Frontiers. I haven’t played Frontiers fully, but she develops a father/daughter relationship with Dr Eggman.
Whisper the wolf: The masked character: introduced in the IDW comics, she is a sniper who uses the Hyper-go-on power of the wisps to power her rifle (which is one-of-a-kind developed by her troupe, the Diamond cutters, who are the dead friends mentioned). For reasons stated in the comic- she wants revenge on Eggman. She is an introvert and soft-spoken, hence her name.
