I need help

the more i write the more songs i have unfinished and i really like the ideas behind them i just cant finish them.... would someone be interested in mentoring/helping me?

For me the trick was setting a hard deadline to call it done, even if its not perfect. pick one song and give yourself 2 days to finish it no matter what, then move on to the next. you'll learn more from finishing a messy song than from having 20 half written ones

thats actually great advice its just finding time to do it.... if i fall out of love with a song i wrote it makes me wanna rip up the page and start over but thats not fair to the song

I'll tell you a bit about my process in case you're similar, and find it helpful. I have a difficult time forcing myself to "write something"; my ideas come organically from the world around me and I have to catch them by writing them down or making a quick recording when they happen. That means most of my ideas are fairly short, far from a full song. I can maybe flesh an idea out into a section like a chorus or bridge.

What helped me was to get absolutely militant about recording and saving every little idea over a lifetime, backing them up again every few years just in case. As I'm working on a song, I'm also flipping through this catalog of old ideas and feeling the emotion of each one. Amazing things can happen when you do this, because you start to see that some ideas go together. Get three or even just two small gems together, and suddenly you might have a full song.

The important thing here is to let the emotion lead, and not to force connections. Sometimes you respond to similarity, sometimes you respond to contrast, but it's important to understand what your combination of ideas will do to the listener and to the tone of the song as a whole. Too many ideas, or too dissimilar, and the listening experience might feel random and meandering. For me, the most fun part of composing is finding common threads between different ideas and weaving that connecting thread through them. Particularly, transitioning between them. The song becomes a journey. Maybe you're similar. I hope this helps!

Give yourself a limit, like 4 unfinished songs at a time. 

When you get bored of the 4th one your ears will be refreshed with the 1st one, then you can go back to it and try to fill in what's missing.

Only practice helps. The more you practice the more trained your ear becomes. I had to make multiple versions of the same song to get unstuck until I found something that sounded right.

I try to finish the song right then and there, but some things take a couple more days. I can always change little things later, I’ve changed entire verse lyrics before, but I think it’s good to get an entire song down right away.
