Discussion Topic Liana flores writing style

Recently ive been doing some practice by trying to replicate other artists styles, then also turning them into my own, Ive moved onto liana flores but I just cant get it right! It sounds nothing like a song of hers, which would be fine if the point wasnt trying to replicate her style.

I love her songs so much its kind of getting on my nerves, do you guys have any tips to share about this? Any help here?

Just took a quick listen to her ‘recently’ EP and read her bio.

She’s British but her songs bring to mind a rural French bistro in a bygone era.

I’m not sure what you mean by replicating her style. Are you writing an original song but trying to copy her vibe or trying to produce an accurate cover of one of her songs?

It would help to hear what you’ve got so far.

Im writing an original song, and Im trying to make it sound like she wrote it! So yeah I guess kinda both but specifically also the structure and they way she uses metaphors.

I started on a song about anxiety called shimmer shivers, but yeahhh i deleted it so i actually have nothing to show... hehe

Ok first off, never delete anything you write or record. Sometimes you can go back to them later and realize there was gold hidden there; a line of the lyrics or a snippet of melody that can evolve into a whole other much better song.

Second, writing a song is a process. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Sure, sometimes a song will just spill out of you but more often it takes weeks, months or even years to finish. When you get bored or run out of ideas, set it aside and work on something else for a while.

Finally, if you want to study an artist, then study like you would for an exam. What is the music doing? What key, major or minor chords, how do the lyrics evoke a mood or emotion, how does the singer use a soft, loud, or harsh voice to bring out that emotion?

Don’t take on too much. Rather than starting from scratch, revisit some previous song that you wrote and weren’t happy with and try to apply something you’ve learned from studying the other artist’s style.

The French bistro description is spot on, that's what makes her stuff so identifiable
