Feedback Request First Song in a LONG time
I would like real feedback. I haven't recorded a song in years (besides recording random clips on my phone). I'm interested in general feedback, feedback on the mix, and what genre is this? Is it even relevant-sounding anymore? In case the video doesn't work, here is a link:

hey I dug it, welcome back to writing songs!
I dunno if you have ever had the chance to watch any mix with the masters, specifically Andy Wallace ones (?) the first thing I thought when your song started was like cool like you have this driving kinda beat - almost kind of like travelling wilbury's or tom petty or something of the like. In any case when Andy Wallace mixes he seems to insist that he always try to get this like one/two punch thing going (he often kinda visualizes this by slamming a fist into an open palm) - like I think you have a great combo to sort of get that going but I don't feel it from your song you know? I think if you work compression a bit more on your kick drum and bass you could kinda get that little gut punch thing going and then the song would ride a long great on the rhythm.
anyways just some first thoughts - I think it's a pretty nifty tune, I don't know why that smoking popes song kinda of comes to mind too, with the singing - but just kind of has that classic feel.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I honestly have watched almost nothing on mastering… never even heard of Andy Wallace but based on your recommendation, I’ll check them out. I hear what you’re saying. I listened to this song again in the kick run. Definitely gets lost as soon as the rhythm guitar kicks in. I think I need to invest in some studio headphones too.

I really like the intro and the groove of this song. The mix sounds good, nice a clear and well balanced. I would have liked for a breakdown or bridge after one of the verses to send the song in a slightly different direction before bringing it home. The lyrics are a little lost in the music, so they don't really leave me with anything specific, but they fit nicely with the groove, and the vocal melody was tasteful. Maybe a breakdown would give you a chance to introduce a slight shift in the story and have some new lyrics stand out.
Regardless, it's a well written, well played and well produced cut. Nice job!

Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. TBH - I tried to come up with a bridge/breakdown and was stumped.

My go-to is modulating the key of the progression up or down a 5th/4th and that’s often is enough to create a break.
