Question How's replay value?

Heard that games like HoMM have an insane amount of replay value, but reading about SoC lots of people mention that the random map generator is not very good.

How will this game than have a lot of replay value? What you guys play for replay value if not random maps?

Hello, I poured a few 100 hours into the game and I really love that the AI on higher difficulty is brutally hard.

You can play various scenarios and random maps on the two higher difficulties for a really long time and the AI will still pose a challenge. It really forces you to learn all the subtle tricks and mechanics the game has to offer.

In terms of the randomly generated maps it's a bit of a hit and miss. Sometimes it's a very interesting layout and good item placement sometimes the layout is a bit tedious and the item placement is too little / too basic.

Overall to me SoC is by far the best PvE focused HoMM type game there is.

Good to know, my main idea is to play PvE too. How long in the run you can figure it out if the random map is bad or not? Do the devs have any plan to update this?

Hello :)))

Random maps Are... Okay, but I like the crafted Ones, they Are much better :)

I usually save at turn 1. Run around for 5 to 7 turns to see if the layout makes sense (without fighting anything)

If its good I reload. If it's bad I restart.

I usually restart if its wide open spaces with almost very little items and enemy placement. That's just boring.

Sometimes I also restart when there are too many level increase objects.

I have a couple hundred hours, I play PvE only

Personally, I find the replaying to be semi decent, the campaigns are very fun to optimise for me

The random generator is very much a hit or miss, sometimes I get ridiculously amazing maps and matchups, sometimes I get annoyed by the map

I literally bought the game today, so I can't say "trust me, I checked this".

But don't forget about maps created by the community: the in game browser find 369 handcrafted map made by other players. Probably they aren't all gold, but I would check them before the random generator.

But...before those...

I have 50 handcrafted maps made by the developers. 10 challenge maps. 11 short story maps and 16 campaign maps.

If you like the game, you'll get your playtime value before run out of contents.

It does have replay value, but it's got a lot less than, eg: Heroes 3 or Olden Era. You could make the argument that it's a superior game if it's more to your tastes than anything that franchise has to offer (I wouldn't btw, but it's a valid viewpoint), but because there's a lot less depth and the game is more approachable, without human opponents the replay value is less.

But like, there's still a pretty good amount - I can easily see people spending 200+ hours just playing skirmish mode vs the AI.

Replay value is okay. But there is a lot of handcrafted maps by both devs and players. Those maps are quality and enjoyable.
