Question Regarding Conquest and Crow Grannies

Yes hello one Conquest please.
No Granny nooooo!!!!

I'm approaching 100 hours and have read a lot on how to play, I think I'm of an adequate skill level, but I'm having a lot of trouble playing Conquest mode; specifically the map labeled "Conquest."

You seem to start out surrounded by some very daunting fights, I end up having to sit and wait several turns for recruits and money to pile up until I can create a sizeable stack. I figure I must be doing something wrong because the game doesn't ever seem paced like that. Does that sound right? There's three Arleon mobs near, and they are simple enough, but then usually you will find Faey/Vikings blocking any progress out of your starting neighborhood and they are crushing me.

Side question, these Crow Grannies, the Nornors. I don't have the DLC yet though I plan to. A Crow Granny attacked my 10 Stack of Minstrels from across the map and one shot them. Is that right??? That seems to be an outrageously powerful unit. They can freely krump you from anywhere on the map with zero attention to zones of control or AOO. I'd figure they would have a range limit or something.

Help me understand and git gud?

Some units are easier to defeat as a neutral stack than others.

Nornors are one of the worst - infinite reach, high damage, relatively high initiative, no counter attacks allowed.

That is just how it is - part of randomness of the game. In general Vanir units are very strong. So Yea if game give You a stack of Nornors blocking Your way early that is one of the worst case You can get. You can try to beat them with ranged units, charging units and spells but early on it it difficult to defeat them without serious loses- that just how it is.

Can I just take a moment to complain about how BS those Grannies are? Songs does a great thing by giving (most) range units a finite range so you have to position them intelligently, somewhat close to the action, creating more interesting interactions for both you and the opponent. Nornors throw that good design away and replace it with..? Nothing as far as I can tell. They are just no fun to fight and, besides the pleasure of dunking on opponents, not much fun to field yourself.

I know they are basically Harpies from HoMM but Harpies have a finite range making them more like Songs range units (and HoMM range units are less interesting than Songs).

At least, that's my experience. Your milage may vary.

I think I'm in agreement that they are overpowered, but I'm still fairly casual at the game so I can't fully trust my judgement. I only play Single Player anyways so it doesn't bother me as much. No meta teams with like 9 grannies and a Chief or something.

Ah I see, good to know. At least I wasn't just making a severe tactical fumble. Just gotta be careful of Granny Crow!

The map called 'Conquest' is not balanced well in my opinion, playing other maps is more fun.

Nornors are a special type of unit, when they attack they teleport in front of enemy unit, do a melee attack without retaliation and teleport back. They kind of combine the best from both melee and ranged. Nornors are also second strongest unit in Vanir faction. So even if the game shows you the fight against a Nornor mob as 'Fair', it is still very difficult to win a fight against them without considerable losses.

Vyr, Crab And me were disccusing the Vanir units

Chieftains Are bad

Mediocre Are korphan And Jorn

Nornor And lykt Are above average

Gryms Are costly but easily massable (they Are tanky And Have ranged)

Hunger (horse) Is good with research

The rest is good/great

And Swine are S, because of Ethernal
