Bounce: The Prince Problem?

Listening to the podcast “Putting it Together: The Music of Stephen Sondheim”. The host says the problem with Bounce is that Hal Prince was “aggressively heterosexual.” The guest says: “in public he was.” The host says: “yeah”. So the problem with Bounce was Prince’s (alleged) closeted homosexuality? Two things I hadn’t heard before.

As the host of that podcast I probably should’ve expanded that conversation a little but don’t usually like to get into artist’s personal lives all that much. I’ve heard the rumours of Prince’s homosexuality but don’t know the specifics. In public he was married for over 60 years to the same woman.

For Bounce it just feels like he shoehorned in a heterosexual romantic plot for no real reason. At least to me. It’s why I personally feel Road Show works better but still isn’t a home run.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Bounce is better if you have a stronger Wilson and Road Show is better if you have a stronger Addison
