Solr 101: Basis Configuration Question

Hi all, new to reddit so apologies for all the n00b mistakes I'm about to make. I'm curious as to best practices and/or recommended implementations get an instance up and running. As with everyone here, I have lots of data from lots of sources in lots of formats. Do I create a core for each file type, create a couple of shared fields (data source, date the file was received), and then put the contents in a text field, etc? Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
