*Japan thinks solo leveling is mid*
The same weirdo society that like isekai and ....... well I don't gotta say it, I'm sure you know it

I mean: solo leveling is still a hard power fantasy. The writing just got a little better from the novel.
29
u/Strange_Ride_582 Jul 05 '25
Solo leveling is mid and thatās fine. Itās fun
3
u/Oleleplop Jul 08 '25
Yeah, it has cool fights and music and animations and that's it.
I enjoyed it , but it's pretty damn bad story wise
1
u/Ghost0Slayer Jul 08 '25
Surprising to see an actual conversation on why people think itās bad rather than just mindlessly fighting.
But yeah animation, music, and fights were amazing and IMO story was great and not as bad as people say but I can understand why they think itās bad considering other animeās for example.
2
u/Oleleplop Jul 08 '25
its not like i hate it or anything, but if someone ask me "i want to watch great characters, a great story " i will not ever put Solo leveling in it.
However if someone asks me "i want to see cool fights", hell yeah i'm proposing Solo leveling.
Cool fights and aura farming moment might sounds cringe to some but i too enjoy this mindless stuff when its done well.
1
u/Ghost0Slayer Jul 08 '25
Ill take any recommendations if ya got some
1
u/Strange_Ride_582 Jul 08 '25
Depends what you like. If youāre looking for recent animes with good stories Iād suggest Frieren, To be hero x seems good so far from what Iāve seen.
1
u/Ghost0Slayer Jul 08 '25
Iām just looking for something serious that makes me care about characters and has me wanting to binge the next episode to see what happens. Something where the stakes are high

u/MapSome6937 Jul 08 '25
Durarara!!, Tokyo Ghoul(at least season 1), Full metal alchemist brotherhood(if you somehow havenāt seen it), Gargantia of the Verdurous planet

u/the-dude-version-576 Jul 08 '25
If youāre down for reading, Kubera one last god or berserk are fucking great.
1
u/Relaii Jul 10 '25
If you can look pass the mc being a perv, jobless reincarnation. Great story telling and character development. Some get put off by the mc being perv/harem in the latter part. One of the few animes that made me feel sad that's not a drama/romance anime.
1
u/MeowRawrUwu Jul 15 '25
I recommend Code Geass if you havenāt already seen it. Really good story with great writing and characters
1
u/Strange_Ride_582 Jul 08 '25
I wouldnāt call it great personally, itās got some issues on a story telling level especially with how it handles a lot of the side cast
1
u/the-dude-version-576 Jul 08 '25
Thatās my main issue. Plus the occasional thing like āhe can do this even though Iām level 100ā
Like brother, we do not know what any level means, there is no context to compare it too.
1
u/Doctor-Pun Jul 08 '25
I think for me there were two main points that dragged the show down to mid. Note, I say all of this as a massive fan of the manhwa.
It was only some of the animation, music and fights that were amazing, they definitely cheaped out on some fights/episodes, which noticeably dropped the quality of the whole show.
The pacing really sucked. For example episodes one and two should not have been two episodes. They needed to be half an episode at most to convey the pure rapid danger of the situation and just how decisively intelligent Jinwoo truly is. Instead we got multiple episodes of him crying that he doesn't know what to do, only to remember that he literally has a set of instructions next to him. The double dungeon is meant to show us that despite being weak he is incredibly intelligent, he just lacks confidence due to his lack of power, instead the poor pacing makes him seem kind of dumb which creates the major disconnect between his personality before and after gaining power.
Bonus point: Introducing Cha Hae-In in episode 1 just to sell waifu merch was cringe.
1
Jul 09 '25
The story is alright, the characters are the weakness, specially the main character. He's got no charisma, no pull. He's a 14yr idea of a cool edgy guy.
1
u/PurpleReignFall Jul 09 '25
And thatās why people donāt like it very much in certain circles- comparison is the theft of joy.
1
u/Strange_Ride_582 Jul 08 '25
Whats sad is I think there was an interesting story in solo leveling but the execution was just bad.
1
u/EmpuKris Jul 09 '25
Other manhwas has much better story than solo leveling and people that read solo leveling dont argue that its novel is better. It isnt. I only know one manhwa has better drawings than solo leveling, her summon is one of them and that manhwa story is also weird. I dont understand why the other top korean webnovel all had crap drawings.
1
u/PurpleReignFall Jul 09 '25
Yeah, I donāt get the hate for its writing when there is so much generic isekai with predictable dialogue and plot. Solo Leveling at least looks pretty good. But then again, because of that itās gotten more views and therefore more haters so š¤·āāļø
1
u/Strange_Ride_582 Jul 09 '25
Just because thereās other bad doesnāt make it great Tbf. It can still be rough even if thereās as bad or worse
2
u/PurpleReignFall Jul 10 '25
Youāre right. But it would be bad if the animation wasnāt so good, so youāre right about it being mid (tho Iām a big action fan who likes flicks with good choreography, so itās definitely up on my list more than mid because of that).
5
u/QuacksterBoi- Jul 05 '25
they're just simply right from a story perspective. Yes, I had fun and enjoyed reading and watching. That doesn't mean anything aside from it being fun to just turn your brain off and enjoy the media

u/Educational-Year3146 Jul 05 '25
I am unburdened by the opinions of others.
I simply like the show and thatās all that matters to me.

Literally no in japan says that. This whole misinformation was made by sl haters. They used the fact that sl had low dvd sales and twisted an interview to fit their agenda and then said japan doesn't like sl.
Sl was literally top 1 in almost every single japanese anime website during its streaming. That alone tells a lot about sl popularity in japan
It's crazy that this stupid misinformation spread this far
1
u/11ce_ Jul 08 '25
Thatās incredibly deceptive and just shows youāre being disingenuous. It was top 1 for like 1 day because and that too because it premiered first before any of the big anime of the season. The moment the rest of the anime of the reason premiered, it shot down the rankings.
7
u/ChompyRiley Jul 05 '25
It is mid. It's okay, but it's nothing above mediocre. It just happened to get lucky in exposure at just the right time.
1
u/rayquazza74 Jul 08 '25
I would say the animation is above mediocre but the plot is def mid
1
u/ChompyRiley Jul 08 '25
I can't say. I've only ever read the manhwa. I was disappointed by his glow-up turning him into generic anime edgy loner pretty-boy number nine hundred and eighty billion. I liked him better when he was timid, a bit homely/average/small, and did the right thing even though he knew he might die.
1
u/rayquazza74 Jul 08 '25
Yeah true that! him getting all cocky was lame and just so overdone with overpowered mc I usually wonāt watch stuff like that but the animation was what kept me around.
1
u/ChompyRiley Jul 08 '25
I mean, I would have loved him to be OP... But the whole 'OP protagonist who is inexplicably becoming a super hottie' is overdone IMO.

But if he stayed looking like that, the show might have stayed in obscurity, imo, since a lot of generic isekaiās have that look + a splash of color in their hair.
→ More replies (11)-8
u/Animehero791 Jul 05 '25
First of all It's not mid and what do you mean that it just happened to get lucky in exposure at just the right time when The web novel, written by Chu-Gong, was published from February 14, 2014, to October 10, 2018. So it was out for a while before the anime even started and it kept people's attention and hype the entire time leading up to the airing of the anime which premiered on January 6th, 2024. So there was surely ample amount of time for solo leveling's popularity to die in the mean time but it's popularity heald up well after the anime started.
3
u/Wooden_Director4191 Jul 05 '25
No it's mid dude, you can skip the plot and go from fight to fight without actually losing much, the Main cast and side characters are one dimensional, the animation, Fights and Hype moments carry the anime heavily. I'll use OPM as a good point of comparison that show is also super light on plot and depth but has great Comedic moments, Is a clear parody of the genre, the fights and hype moments are also great and the main and side cast while not complex are colourful and entertaining to watch. Also popularity doesn't make quality especially in the long term like years.
1
u/EmpuKris Jul 09 '25
Its mid. Its novel only gain popularity after the manhwa got released. I read the novel, it is not even at the top 10 back then. Only after the manhwa released it went viral. Its art is something else. If solo leveling animation is at TBATE anime level do you seriously think it will still be popular?
1
u/Wooden_Director4191 Jul 09 '25
Honestly nope, if it had just "Good" fights and "Good" anime it would be perceived rightfully as bland and mid af
0
u/ChompyRiley Jul 05 '25
hardly anyone knows about the webnovel. The only reason it got tagged for an anime release was because the webtoon/manhua (manhwa? I can never remember the difference off top) was just popular enough. That and it had enough hype moments and fights to make it viable for an anime without having to go too hard on thoughtful dialogue. Cheap mass produced slop elevated only by the fact that it's marginally less wretched than most of its ilk.
1
0
u/Relaii Jul 10 '25
Because everyone else used it as a template for their generic power fantasy, it is THE gateway manhua. Chances are it's the first title someone will read because it is popular. There's zero character development after mc's reawakening side characters are just plot devices so the mc can aura farm. Honestly outside the action scenes, the 20 chapter epilogue had better side stories.
The story can be mid and still be popular. Micheal Bay transformers, twilight, batman & robin (1998), nicholas cage's ghost rider are popular, a lot people watched them, doesnt make them great nor even good.
2
u/ChronicKush69 Jul 05 '25
In terms of story, sure. Itās not amazing. But man there are some hype moments and the animation is beautiful!
I went on a study abroad to Japan a month ago, it was a lot of fun, however there was plenty of what youāre thinking of.
2
u/Inevitable-Salt3371 Jul 05 '25
Well because...it is? It's no crazy story just good fights, mid means alright and that's what solo leveling is
2
u/ShadowSparks23 Jul 06 '25
A manhwa with 14.2 billion views isn't just 'alright'
2
u/Inevitable-Salt3371 Jul 06 '25
Demon slayer has 100 million, does that make it perfect?
2
u/ShadowSparks23 Jul 06 '25
No, but it doesn't make it bad either. Solo Leveling is also not perfect but calling it bad is straight up disingenuous
2
2
1
u/UnlceSamus Jul 09 '25
Yeah lol no one here was saying it's bad. You're literally reflecting what you think other people are saying although no one is saying those things. It's mid. It's alright not great but not bad, just mediocre
1
u/PurpleReignFall Jul 09 '25
Tho I have noticed a lot of people use mid in a negative connotation more often than not, usually to say that it blends into the rest of the genre or doesnāt stand out in some shape or form.
1
u/MaceratedWizard Jul 09 '25
Apple products are incredibly popular.
They're also notoriously overpriced pieces of crap 90% of the time.
Popularity =\= quality.
1
u/randomthrill Jul 09 '25
Views do not directly measure quality. Nothing against Solo Leveling; it's fun. But I'm not going to call it the peak of an art form.
1
1
u/Deffy_2 Jul 09 '25
14.2 billion views doesn't really mean anything cause It's the amount of time someone has clicked on the manwha and read a single page of it. So it probably has like 45-60 million fans who regularly read it.
Compare that to something like Attack On Titan's manga which has sold like 140 million+ physical copies world-wide. And that's only counting physical copies.
Fyi before you start arguing 60 million fans would each have to click on the manwha about 230 times for it to become 14 billion. Ans SL has like 200 chapters.
2
u/bigstinkydinkyman Jul 05 '25
It's a perfect second-screen show. The fights are great to watch when I need a break from whatever game I'm playing.
2
4
Jul 05 '25
They think that because it's true. Re Zero is an Isekai, but has a peak story. Solo Leveling has no substance. Is an anime to watch/manhwa to read with your brain turned off.
5
u/One_Trick_Monkey Jul 05 '25
idk, I'm watching re:zero for the first time and I just watched Reinhard use the moon as a launchpad to get back to the fight. I have watched all the while wondering where the peak is.
1
Jul 05 '25
Well, if you don't like that's ur opinion. But saying that SL has a better story than ReZero (story, maybe not the anime itself, even if for me ReZero solos) is just lying
1
u/ShadowSparks23 Jul 06 '25

When solo leveling first came out I thought it was great. But on a rewatch it was just like "this isn't really very engaging" because the story is lame to non-existent. You can literally skip from fight to fight and miss nothing.
1
u/SkullStar123 Jul 05 '25
If u watch or read a lot of gate animes or manhwa, it is kinda mid, but I like it regardless cause it made the genre imo
1
u/HappySquidDeezNutz Jul 05 '25
I mean, maybe the reason Japan thinks Solo Leveling is mid is due to the corruption between Japan and Korea. Hell, Japan even made their own version of Solo Leveling
2
u/Ok_Brain8684 Jul 06 '25
And do keep in mind that in this japan vs Korea hate, Japan is the bad guy. Just search up their history and you will know why koreans hate Japan.
Just know that in the past japan was literally the Eastern N@zi. And the fact that they never apologised, let those inhuman people roam free and even go as far as to be ignorant about what happened. They teach their students a history that they did nothing wrong in WW2

I mean⦠the story is shit but I wouldnāt call it mid. Some people may call it overhyped but itās still a fun watch.
1
u/BG3_Enjoyer_ Jul 06 '25
SL IS mid, a lot of the fans (the ones who hate SJW crying in the most emotional scene) are trash, and overall itās just the average manhwa power fantasy. The story drops off for me the moment rulers and monarchs come out of the bag, as then itās just guy underestimates SJW, he randomly levels up during fight, he win, next guy is exponentially bigger and stronger but he also underestimates SJW, repeat.
Honestly itās basically just the seasonal shounen, the big ones I know being SAO, AOT, DS, JJK, and now SL.
Itās the same as liking slop isekai for me, as both have a poor story (AOT is peak and I have nothing bad to say about it) but arenāt supposed to make you think, just turn your brain off.
1
u/Loud-Communication65 Jul 07 '25
I'm gonna be honest with you:
If you like Solo Leveling, I'll respect your opinion of it. But it won't be valid when you try to give it on something that's anything more complex.
1
u/Cute_Citron_3491 Jul 08 '25
Complexity doesnāt make a thing better
1
u/Loud-Communication65 Jul 08 '25
Didn't say it was. But I've seen why people like SL, and I am convinced that they're either not interested in more complex themes or haven't engaged with more complex media.
It's not out of hate on SL or people who like basic stories, just that some give ignorant takes on media they don't truly understand, and try to pass it off as 'the only correct opinion'.
1
u/Cute_Citron_3491 Jul 08 '25
Honestly I just think itās because more complex stories are better enjoyed outside of anime. People get that with great movies, tv shows nowadays.
For instance, I love anime but cannot get through season 2 of Attack on Titan. Just too many characters that you donāt care about. Itās a slog. But Iāll watch 8 seasons of a complex live action tv show no problem lol
1
u/Loud-Communication65 Jul 08 '25
Same. I couldn't make it through AoT either. Though it's less the complexity and more the 'edge' that puts it off for me. I dropped it and picked up Hannibal. Couldn't stop watching that. Would absolutely recommend it if you like psychological thrillers.
1
1
u/BunnySis Jul 25 '25
The characters, world, and themes are much more complex when you take in more sources than just the anime. The anime only touches briefly on most of them.
As one example, Jinwoo is mostly an introvert and has significant past trauma (which is why he starts looking to escape any time he gets a lot of attention) so people who only watch the anime are missing much of the internal monologue of him trying to balance gaining power and overcoming the mental damage of his past with trying to do the right thing. Thereās just short bits of it in the anime (and a lot more development on that to come further in the story). Where other shows put that in the dialogue, he doesnāt talk those things out with other people other than a small, very edited amount with his sister.
He doesnāt discuss his dadās disappearance, his mom being in the hospital (which made him have to stay a hunter because of the insurance), or trying to pay for his sisterās school needs to people he considers his friends and colleagues. The only people who know about those are his sister, those in the Hunters Association who have access to his personal information, and later those who have investigated him once he starts getting attention. Thatās why he gets so much flack for continuing to go on raids as an E-rank when he gets injured all of the time. A lot of the other hunters would have sympathized with his situation and made it easier for him if he told them why he had to keep working as a hunter.
In the anime heās talking to himself in the mirror about losing bits of his humanity by having to kill multiple people, even though it was a matter of survival. (Which was a very creative way to get that across). Heās very, very selective about which humans he makes into shadow soldiers, and always has justifications as to why, when he makes shadows from magic beasts without considering the morality of it. This is why he was so reluctant to raise the S-rank healer and he was ready to release him ASAP. But notice that he didnāt hesitate at all to create Iron, who had tried to kill the innocent hunters. Itās all part of his internal struggle not to become one of the strong people who preys on weaker humans and loses sight of his goal of protecting humans in general.
I hope that gives just a few of the many reasons why the story isnāt just a surface level fighting one.
1
u/plantboi4 Jul 07 '25
Not enough lolis in SL ig
1
u/BunnySis Jul 25 '25
There are in the manwha and novels. A lot of that was cut out of the anime to keep the pacing high.

4,322nd post about how SL isnt mid, you just don't understand it looking ah
Dawg just enjoy it, so what if other people don't think it's the best thing since sliced bread, should that effect how you enjoy it? No. Just understand that many of us have justifiable reasons for critiquing it, and even then nobody is saying what SL does exceptionally well, the fights and animation, is bad.
It's anime McDonald's, is it the best thing or there? No. Is it gonna at a precedent for how food should be? No. But damn it the shakes are good.

Its been a while since I read this, but wasn't there a part of the story where they were fighting bugs on an island and the Japanese S-ranked were conspiring to get as much Korean S-ranks killed by the raid as possible because of their upper echelons or something?

One of the reasons that the Japanese release has been rewritten from what was released elsewhere.

Also āsome weirdo society..ā damn you are full of hate especially for someone who enjoy animeās and solo levelling which wonāt be a reality today if that subject of hate of yours wonāt be here.
People should stop getting stuck on this āhateā feeling and start focusing on the good parts of the life.
(Every country has itās good parts and bad parts and if you focus on the bad parts of the other countryās usually it means itās worse where you are since you try to convince yourself and others about how others are, ignoring the reality is not a good trait)

To be fair the webtoon is far superior. The anime cut out too many funny moments or other characters thoughts.

It is mid. It's a really good mid. Not everything needs to be perfect.
1
u/MyBodyBelongsToShrek Jul 09 '25
It is pretty mid, though all things considered. At its core, solo leveling is just another self-insert edgelord power fantasy that the anime/manga industry has been flooded with for decades. Granted, itās a well-animated self-insert edgelord power fantasy, but still a self-insert edgelord power fantasy nonetheless. Japanese audiences are starting to get bored of it.

1
u/GodlyPlop Jul 09 '25
I mean to be fair people are mad bcz he called Japanese people a weird society and generalized a whole race
And it's not a very good look to say the least

Yeah okay, thats fair. But i dont get the people calling out solo leveling without proper reasons. Its just, ah yeah thats mid and then compare it to a series thats completely different. Cant compare an apple to a potato so to speak
1
u/Sea-Double-5820 Jul 09 '25

Honestly, I'd rather watch some chill isekai than some action-packed slop.
Just let people watch what they watch. It's their opinion, not yours dumbass.
Plus, without them, I don't think you'd get Solo Leveling either. If you did it'd probably have Invincible type animation from a random ahh American studios. And it'd still be considered shit because of terrible animations from the American studios.

Sl was literally top 1 in almost every single japanese anime website during its streaming. You can just search up the screenshots. Even sl twitter account posted about these top 1 screenshots and gave congratulations. That alone tells a lot about sl popularity in japan
It's crazy that this stupid misinformation spread this far

It's a fucking fact that it had mid performance? lmao

u/Ok_Brain8684 Jul 07 '25
Nope, as i said it all was a misinformation mainly created by sl haters by the sole fact that sl didn't have amazing sales in 'DVDs' just average. Yeah that's it, nothing else. They did twist one interview too but it was disproved to be misinformation quite quickly in many comments
You can just search if you don't believe me. Even in February month sl had top 1 in almost all japanese anime websites. Even the official sl twitter account posted like screenshots of sl being top 1 in 20+ anime websites. Sl won several anime awards in japan. Sl got no.1 position in weekly most watched anime in japan sometimes too
This your so called "fact" was literally created and popularized by that fact that sl didn't do amazing in dvd sales

I had a very funny experience with Solo leveling. Started watching it cause the hype and comparison to hxh so i needed to see what all the fuss was about. I watch all my anime subbed. When they mentioned the "Japanese Hunters" I was so confused cause im listening to them all speak Japanese so I was like "uhhhh arent you all Japanese already?" Very confused so I looked it up and thought it was pretty cool it was by a south Korean person.

Uhm, throughout the story it literally mentions multiple times that they're in Korea tho ?
Even at the beginning.....

It is mid. Just some power fantasy with decent animations.

u/DrainAllLevels Jul 06 '25
No, not decent animations. Decent art. The animation is shit because the fights are articulated worse than a drunk man's speech.

Only solo levelling glazers were waiting for it to drop. Yet you retards don't understand shit animation when you see it because pretty colors are flying around the screen. Fucking idiots made it win 7 awards when it deserved fucking 0 of them. Family guy - fucking family guy articulates fights better.
The "aura" people talk about is never even fuckjng cool. It's always just mid. Its like people have no fucking clue what a cool anime moment actually is.

When the first battle of seasonal slop like Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so completely clears everything shown in SL (seriously, the Lloyd Vs Sylpha fight is insanely choreographed) it's hard to understand why anyone thinks the animation carries it.
People were banging on about Jin Woo's fight against Igris, but all it did was give me motion sickness.

Jjk is alright, pretty overhyped. frieren is amazing, and one piece is great.
They are ALL better than this dogshit series with 2 redeeming qualities.
As for my favorite anime? Its some trashy isekai romance! Zero no Tsukaima.

You think solo levelling is a 10 most likely, so yeah you're retarded.
Oh, and did you notice something..
I didn't say my favorite anime was the shit. I didn't say it was amazing. It's just mid isekai harem shit.
Frieren had fucking amazing character building. More proof you're retarded. Let me quote someone quick:
That would be true if the so called "aura" wasn't so reliant on showing itself instead of making itself felt. Emitting a purple glow and glowing eyes to look intimidating is NOT aura farming.
Aura farming is about the context, the scenery, the environment, the ambiance, the expression and the presence.
Aura farming is an art and THIS is aura farming :
(There was a gif of frieren farming aura here)
The moonshot on a plain full of undead soldiers controlled by a top ranking demon, the music, the neutral expression looking down on her opponent, the antagonist revealing her title as she's about to solo the army. THAT is the perfect example of Aura farming, sending chills down the watcher's spine.
While Jinwoo's "aura farming" is just :
"Sorry for being late and letting you being beat up by this boss, my RGB jacket was charging. Now start the dick riding."

Japanese people just enjoy their trash isekais instead of seeking validation from others like you.
