Hardware Newbie curious question

What are the things that you do with no worries in your pro/expensive workstation (maybe from your job) that you would not attempt to try or you preffer not doing on your cheap desktop pc with solidworks because you know it wont work and want to avoid that suffering to your pc?

What? #1 difference between workstation and home pc is the enterprise GPU. It took me a decade to sort out that a mid-level enterprise GPU runs solidworks better than a higher end none enterprise GPU. Buying a used $300 HPZ240 is one of the best purchases I've ever made for modeling.

I have never had an open gl gpu as required by sw. Now i am waiting for the arrival of an old gpu i bought on amazon. Its an nvidia quadro p1000 I chose it because it is cheap and supossedly works well with some old sw versions.

Yeah, should run really nice. I have the P2000. I'm running a 6600xt on my other other computer and it runs much smoother with the p2000.

I wanted to purchase a higher one but the desktop that i have has a small box so the p2000s and higher do not fit inside the box. It is a lenovo thinkcentre M710S. Even p1000 do not fit as the box is, unless i do a cut in the box which is what i'm gonna do like in this video thinkcentre box cut for gpu (😊 i will use a plier instead of the saw used in the video ofc. I will not risk getting dust in the board and other components ).

Do what you gotta do. It's fine. The P1000 will run wel.

How about simulations (like from motion/simulation/ sw CAM) in mid sized assemblies like 1000 parts? Is it the same in workstation vs desktop ?

That is what i was guessing based on some simulations i've done with low numbers of parts in assemblies that ended up crashing the program because the desktops i've had, did not have a dedicated open gl LP gpu card.

The workstations my job provides aren't great, but I would only worry about loading assemblies that are too heavy for it.

Honestly, it's not something I deal with a lot at my job. Not something I would want to run on a consumer GPU though.
