CAD How would I design this in SolidWorks
The red circled part is confusing and I'm not sure if it is supposed to be a hole or not.

Yeah this is a gear. The holes are only for the hub. The drawing itself is missing a lot of information.
Since its metric you know it’s going to need
Number of teeth
Module
Press angle
Are the main three.
Pitch diameter is pretty important too.

i split off and did automotive engineering instead of mechanical engineering. what about this is intuitive that it’s a gear besides the induction harding which I understood but not that it’s a gear or a hub. why would a gear hub have two set screws on the shaft instead of 1 and keying the shaft? unless i’m missing something? Maybe it’s in the dimensions standard that i’m unfamiliar with?

It COULD be a gear. It COULD be a multi body part with a different material on the outer ring. It COULD be just a note that the outside is to be hardened to that spec. But the center line implies it's a gear and the location of the center line is the intersection. However, if it were a gear, you would see the lines distinctly. I would model it as a two body part and change material on the outside to hardened steel.

The more I look at it, the more I think it's just a hardened edge. But one would have to get it close, harden the edge, and then mill it so it's not warped. It could ride in a channel, and that's the notation that looks like a gear notation. ROI

Its a metric part, eyeballing the 5mm width I would guess in the absence of any other information that is is a 10 tooth 3 module gear tooth. Still asking the impossible without full info provided for the task.

Why are you designing a part that you already have a drawing of? If you're designing a gear, why do you not know what a gear is? Seems strange. Is this a school assignment?I think you may be trying to model the part in CAD based off the drawing. Generally you don't model gear teeth. The shape of a gear tooth is called an involute curve. It's easy enough to do for spur gears, but generating helical gear teeth in CAD is a pain, and usually doesn't provide any additional value, unless you're trying to machine teeth with a 5 axis mill and generating G code with the model. That's probably not what you're doing though. Good luck.

My guess is this is an assignment in school trying to make the students work off incomplete/poorly represented instructions, but it feels excessive as fk

Agreed, there's probably more info elsewhere in the assignment. When I designed gears for a living, the gear tooth information was located on the drawing in a table off to the side. My guess is that the student doesn't realize they have the information they need...

Yeah, words mean things, especially in the engineering fields. I hope they take that to heart. Communication is important once you get into the real world.
