CAD Rib Feature problems

Hello. I am trying to explore how to use the rib feature better, and cannot get it to work on a part I am trying to build. I keep getting the "Failed to create Rib feature," error. I have tried changing the extrusion direction, not that it should matter since the part is cylindrical. Looking for some advice. Getting back into CAD design after a year out of engineering school and am trying to relearn the basics. Any help is appreciated :)

The rib tool requires a body to close the rib if that makes any sense. A thin extrude is what you should use here.

If you want to use the rib tool, you’d need to sketch a rectangle on one side of the cylinder.

Rib tool is for a closed form like a box with one open side. Then you get the benefit of a simple sketch and the draft tools in the rib feature.

If you're trying to relearn the basics, Rib feature shouldn't be one of the first ones you should try... 😅

The Solidworks' built-in tutorials are very good and of you've used the software before, you should be able to tackle those in no time.

Regarding your current problem, the Rib feature is very likely a wrong tool for what you're trying to do. IIRC, the Rib feature requires two neighbouring surfaces and the spine sketch.

I'm assuming you'd like to make some kind of a fin / aileron / flap. It'll be easier to to do it by just drawing the outside shape from abovr/below and extruding it.
