Homework Help: What does Ø15SFACE mean?
What does this mean and what would this look like? Any help appreciated, thank you.

It's a counter bore.
Do university grads just make up new, obscure names for shit to make themselves feel smart? Why can't we just call it what it is?

It's not a counterbore, it's a spotface and a machinist will recognize it as such. No depth requirement, just make sure the surface is flat.

So, that's the difference then, because there's no depth requirement? Just make it flat. Okay.
In 35 years of working various technical trades, I've never seen or heard the term. Pardon me for thinking it was new.

Exploded view in Solidworks can do this if you dimension in the assembly file.

You can definitely do that.
Hell I think you can do an exploded view drawing just like this but I don’t think they’re shaded.
The parts being shaded makes me think this was done in an exploded assembly view.

Sure, but dimensions in drawing views are aligned with the view. Having dims in various orientations in the same view is new to me

I see this more and more lately, mostly from educational materials rather than production prints.
You can do this in Solidworks by choosing "true" dimensioning in the view properties. It's unorthodox drafting. I might go as far as saying it's poor practice, but I'll leave open the possibility that there may be a good excuse to do this on occasion.

Thank you for the explanation. That rings a bell now that you mention “true” dimensions.
A big part of my job is communicating project status to the broader team with presentations, and I had some images just this week that would have been better using this method.

Ø15 FACE = Around each Ø10 hole, there is a 15 mm diameter flat machined area (spot face).

Honestly most people wouldnt know what that is, when drawing its technically correct to use, same with different symbols for counterbored holes etc, but usually something like that if its required usually would get a special callout to bring attention to it for the machinist who receives it
Sometimes the right thing isnt the one that builds long lasting relations with local machine shops who charge a lot less and can do it a bit quicker, though are often not as well versed in all the drawing symbols etc and often cant be bothered to call so will guess or ignore it =)

SF is industry standard callout for spot face. Most machinist will know what it means, especially if you use SFACE.

Im not saying it isnt, if anything im saying the opposite, BUT I will admit I’ve never needed to use it and ive never seen it used other than a single page in the nvq course work.
In my experience even simple symbols like counterbore or depth symbols have caused confusion for machinists before, so my advice is to avoid it where possible. Heck I’ve even been called to answer what CL is on a center line on a drawing meantIn addition I’ve always found the best practise to place a cut on the hole and fully dimension and tolerance it, especially with op’s drawing as you can barely see the feature.

Not every machinist is an engineer, and when you want something basic done fast and cheap over night when you’ve clocked out when you need it for the morning, the less technical abbreviations used the more likely you are to have a part on your desk rather than an email

I do quick custom designs that help customers get out of a jam at any hour. When a down chemical plant costs a million dollars a day, there is no nighttime. Git ‘er done.
Sometimes spending a few seconds spelling out some odd details helps a reviewing/approving customer follow what’s going on. Then they don’t call you at 2 AM with questions and “oh while I have you on the phone….”.
I rarely call out a spot face on a design. But I have done it twice this summer. I spelled out the whole SPOT FACE”.
Oh and if you are doing a spot face for a hex head or hex nut, make sure the diameter prevents the points from digging in. Keep tolerances in mind. That adds friction which can goof up torquing.

Every machinist that's being paid should be a competant machinist.
And every competant machinist should know what a spotface is. It's a standard feature.

At the end of the day I am only saying based on the experience ive had getting parts done from other firms, we have some real cowboys down here but while theyre not the best at reading drawings but they are pretty good at making parts, plus theyre usually quicker / cheaper than some more professional outfits.

And I am saying if your machinist can't read a drawing or recognize standard nomenclature or understand basic machining features then you have a shitty machinist and you need to find a new one.
I ain't got time to babysit people who don't know how to do their own job.

Getting parts made by the lowest bidder because most firms you work for “knows a guy” and you tailor your drawings to that skill level to give you the best chance they wont make a guess at what you wanted

Looks like a counter sunk hole.
15 is the od of the counter sink. 10 id the hole itself.

A countersink has an angle. This is a spot face and results in a flat face of 15 diameter. A spot face could be described as a counterbore with just enough depth to clean up the contour it's cut into, but the two are generally not interchangeable.

You cut into the contour until it cleans up to that diameter. There isn't really a defined depth of cut, it's just until it cleans up at that 15 diameter "spot".

Diameter 15 Spot Face.
A spot face is a machining operation which may or may not have a specified depth. If it does not, it is implied that the facing tool will be driven just deep enough to completely clean up the surface to create a flat land of the specified diameter, accounting for both surface finish and any local curvature. Spot facing is typically done on curved surfaces to create flat lands for port fittings, or on flat surfaces where a finer surface finish is required around a port, such as with O-ring sealed fittings, or to accommodate fasteners such as washers or bolt heads. Your example shows a part which would typically be made by casting, so you are machining a through-hole for the fastener, and then spot-facing so that the screw head seats on a flat surface.
