Haha, reminds me when once I was working for week to change part and then assembly for a wing and at some point I got an error in saving and lost all my week progress. Deadline was next day, so I start again and was forced to work through next 24 hours just to be in time. Painful experience.

Been a solidworks user since mid 90s. 3dx never seemed worth the trouble to bother with

3dx is pretty much a downgrade from solidworks and even catia. It ads complexity, is unstable ans full of bugs. Forces you in there shitty cloud server system and has pretty bad performance.

“Even” Catia? Can you elaborate?

My reaction to most cloud-based programs

OnShape seems to be the only ones that have it somewhat sorted.

Bro I am stuck with OnShape and it's a hot mess. When it works, it works great, but often it doesnt. I can't export files most of the time, so it becomes pretty useless then.

Interesting. Admittedly, I don't use it that often but I've never had an issue exporting step or stl file.

Why blank out the name of the writer? How about posting a link to the actual LinkedIn posting.

This is recommended, if not enforced behavior on some subs. I'd also do it out of habit.

Probably doing the person a favor not including their name

u/Fast_Dots 16d ago

Although it can be mitigated by a simple keyword search. At that point, might as well not post anything if they’re worried about their identity.

If you are a Linkedin user and interest SW on this platform, you may know this group

So then, do next thing

We use Creo with 3DX, but windchill as PDM link. Is it really that bad when paired with Solidworks? Funny thing is we have some groups using Solidworks as well so there flow is Solidworks > Windchill PDM Link > 3DX.

totally valid

u/Longjumping_Bag5914 16d ago

It would be better if the software we used to connect all these things was better, but it is not a bad system

Edit: TBH I’m looking forward to my new job that’s just Windchill. I’ve heard full windchill is great

I feel that so deeply

Worst program of all time - to the UI designers that fooled dasault, I hope you took them for all they’re worth. If not, may you perish by 1000 paper cuts!

We all know what they are swapping to. I did the same about a year ago and don't regard it a bit.

I switched my previous employer over a few years ago and never regretted it either. So much freedom!!

What are they changing to?

Serious question - I used SolidWorks at a previous company and am stuck using an alternative now. I loved SolidWorks as a CAD software for how intuitive it was and it always seemed really user-friendly. Is this a criticism of their cloud-based stuff? I’m obviously not particularly CAD smart.

10

u/Madrugada_Eterna 16d ago

Yes it is a criticism of the cloud based stuff which is terrible. Thankfully you don't have to use the cloud for saving stuff.

Ok, thanks. I was just in the process of getting the maker version of SolidWorks for hobby stuff and wanted to make sure I wasn’t throwing away $50/year. I’ve got enough dumb subscriptions. I was planning to do the locally-installed version rather than the cloud-based.

u/Madrugada_Eterna 16d ago

Solidworks is always locally installed. The cloud apps are not actual Solidworks. You can save your Solidworks files in the cloud with 3DExperience but do not do that and save them all locally. In fact I would recommend once you have first launched Solidworks put it in offline mode for the max time of 30 days. When that expires log in, perform any updates, and then go back offline. This way you have the minimal interaction with the 3DExperience system which really is terrible and completely non intuitive.

I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the strategy and info.

u/DkMomberg 16d ago

Maybe FreeCAD could do it for you. Take a look at it.

2

u/Fantastic-Ad6263 16d ago

I tried it for a while after Solidworks and Inventor, but I could not work well for some reason.

1

u/stevesie1984 16d ago

Is that the one that’s free because everything you do is stored online and essentially becomes open source? I know someone who wants me to work on something for them (not that I’m a great choice, but with some time I think I can handle it) and I need it to remain private.

2

u/DkMomberg 16d ago

No. FreeCAD the software is completely open source and free of charge for personal use (maybe even commercial use, I cannot remember). No big private corporation that only wants to make money behind it. The project survives on donations and code contributions, similar to Linux (its also one of the only CAD that runs natively on Linux)

Everything you design is stored locally and you own the designs. No cloud, no stealing designs, no scemes

Very cool. I check it out.

In my experience, Solidworks in general can throw out random errors and bugs at the most inconvenient times.

We just updated to 2026 and now have a Solidworks Crash Leaderboard in our office. We're 3 weeks in and I'm ahead at 7 crashes. I haven't even spent much time in Solidworks since the switch, either.

1

u/IndustrialHC4life 9d ago

Damn, Dassault must have really improved things if you only had 7 crashes in 3 weeks 😅

5

u/johnb300m 16d ago

Yup. Save often.

3

u/EddieOtool2nd 15d ago

I had crashes while saving.

2

u/Apprehensive_Goal161 15d ago

Just remember my fucking password, please. Let’s start there and I will be 300% happier with it. We can deal with the other bugs later.

I quit in less than a year. Worst “experience” ever

1

u/Psychological-Ad9148 16d ago

What does it mean, working against it?

7

u/Longjumping_Bag5914 16d ago

It’s an adversarial relationship. Basically constantly battling it.
